Terrace Hill Historic Site

I would label this a must-do if you are in the Des Moines area. The mansion is beautiful and there’s actually quite a bit to see here. The tour is super affordable ($5) and our docent was very knowledgeable. The history behind the house is really cool and it’s very pretty.

Kent was a great tour guide. This is a must-do tour in Des Moines! Kent was so knowledgeable and made our visit feel like we were watching the historic events themselves unfold in real time. Highly recommend, and also book your tickets in advance!

Toured with a small group and found the docent to be very knowledgeable and helpful and willing to look up info on questions she didn't know offhand. The home is beautiful and although the tour is short, it's well worth it. Lots of unique history behind this governor's mansion!

Very beautiful home from the 1860's, saved from calls to be torn down, and fully restored. Ironically, the third floor now functions as the residence for the Governor of Iowa.
