Inside Texere, the Textile-Making Residency Promoting Social Equity in Oaxaca | Vogue

"On a balmy afternoon in a pueblo outside of Oaxaca, an intimate group of local artisans gathers on a leafy patio beneath a stately flamboyant tree to learn the Okinawan practice of banana fiber extraction from Japanese native Yuka Makino-Bullard, who is completing a month-long residency here. With arabesque archways and cantera verde–limewash walls, this shared textile studio, residency space, and specialty shop could be mistaken for a beautiful home on the outskirts of Oaxaca, but co-founders Ana Cris Medina Palmeros and Caitlin Garcia-Ahern have built it to bridge the cultural gap between Oaxacan communities and visitors. Its model centers on reciprocal knowledge sharing and sliding-scale fees that reflect privilege and access to resources, aiming to create a more equitable exchange in a region that has long grappled with extractive forces." - Catherine Tansey

Texere is a beautiful textile studio in Oaxaca. I’ve been there twice and have learned many useful skills including dying, weaving, basket and embroidery, while enjoying its lush surroundings and wonderful community. It is a haven for all who appreciate slow crafts, and the shop features lots of beautiful textile objects and materials from around the world. Will definitely be back!

I did a two week textile residency program at Texere in 2023 and it was an amazing experience! There are so many textile and fiber related resources at Texere. It truly is a co-working space where artists and members of the community locally and abroad gather to share knowledge, create, and exchange skills. Caitlin and Ana Cris are incredibly accommodating and are very plugged into the artisan network of Oaxaca. I spent my time at Texere learning new skills like floor loom weaving, natural dyes, and visiting artisans around Oaxaca. Muchos gracias :)

Texere is an AMAZING textile space in Oaxaca. I've taken numerous workshops there including embroidery and backstrap weaving. The teachers are very knowledgable and the shop is beautifully curated. Highly recommend if you're in Tule.

Texere is a textile artist residency and a cultural space for creative connection. It is located in Santa María del Tulle, a town just 20 minutes outside of Oaxaca City. In addition to the textile coworking services that it offers, Texere also has an incredible shop filled with carefully curated home goods, accessories and craft supplies. I have been lucky to spend quite a bit of time in this beautiful space, which is run by an incredible, supportive team. I love working in the garden and browsing the shop. . I returned here for nearly a month this past December to complete an art project. My work is immensely informed by my time here, as you’ll mainly see through the fibers I use. But aside from the materials and endless inspiration, opportunities for learning about the historical and cultural significance cloth holds here, I am met with a feeling of being “at home.” And with that, there is a pace that my life takes here that I haven’t been able to find elsewhere; It almost feels as if time stands still and I can become fully immersed in my creative practice. I hope that you all find that same sentiment in your craft, but also hope you have a chance to visit this special place.

Texere is a dream work space for creatives and textile lovers alike. Natural dyes, weaving, embroidery, spinning, quilting, crochet, knitting ... literally anything textile is elemental here. One can rent a loom for the day and learn from a master weaver or just hang out and embroider with locals. Hyper specific techniques can be learned from any of their international visiting residents who give back to the community by way of knowledge sharing work shops. Its also insanely beautiful and has a fabric, fiber tool supply store caring uncommon finds from around the Americas, I could not recommend it more!

I have visited Texere several times for different textile workshops and events and it is truly a remarkable place. Architecturally stunning, the space is full of inspiring pieces and people. The teachers are knowledgable, kind, patient and help create beautiful atmosphere. At the front they have a textile shop as well filled with unique textile pieces from around Mexico, Latin America and more which I struggled to resist taking home with me. I look forward to heading back soon! :)

My time at Texere was absolutely unforgettable. The Texere team has created an incredible resource in this space. Welcoming both travelers and community members alike to learn about traditional and modern craft techniques, Oaxacan culture, and to connect with fellow creatives. I was there studying pottery. They set me up with an incredible lineup of local potters to visit and work with across the area, each using different techniques and clays. Goyo was our legendary guide who brought such thorough knowledge, connection, and FUN to the experience. Not to mention how beautiful the space at Texere is and how charming the town of Tule. Thank you, Texere for offering me the privilege to visit Oaxaca and learn in such a profound way!
