The 9 Best BBQ Spots In Nashville 2024

"Tex’s in South Nashville isn’t one of the bigger names in town. But one look at their saloon-like exterior, the shed piled high with wood, and all the western gear inside, and you know it's going to be legit. And it is. They have a reasonably priced and consistent menu of brisket, pork ribs, and other expected meats served cafeteria-style, along with a zesty rendition of jalapeño cowboy beans and turnip greens. The barbecue bologna here is the dark horse, though. Get it as part of a combo plate and throw in some homemade cobbler for dessert. " - jackie gutierrez jones 2

Google
I’m giving all 5’s, but just know the food is basic good. Didn’t have anything bad. Didn’t have anything amazing. I did really like the brisket and of all things the toast. Pork was vinegary tasting, but I’ve found that’s a TN regional thing. Their homemade mild sauce wasn’t too bad. Turnip greens had some nice heat. Slaw was very good. Mac n Cheese was ok. Potato salad… acceptable, but not my favorite. Atmosphere was like stepping back 30 years in old Nashville. Loved it! Excellent service as well. No issues. And the price was very favorable. Long story short, I’d go back.

Google
Our only BBQ experience while visiting Nashville did not disappoint! Nice proprietors, yummy (and very filling!) food and fun decor for a reasonable cost. Highly recommend!

Google
Traveling from MI found this random place. Unbelievable how busy it was for lunch and worth every minute of time waiting. Food was great and alot of it for a very affordable price. Next time in Nashville we will be back. Got the sampler plate, ribs, turkey, sausage and brisket. Potatoes and green beans. Awesome place, no frills just good food.

We had an amazing experience at Tex’s World Famous Bar-B-Q. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere is rustic and authentic, yet very well organized and clean — it really gives you that classic Southern BBQ vibe. The food? Simply excellent. The brisket was juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The sides were delicious too, and everything came at a very fair price. You get great quality without overpaying. Highly recommended for anyone looking for real BBQ and a true local experience in Nashville!

Google
Had to test out this style of BBQ, being from Texas. The inside is like an old school cafeteria. Choose your meat and sides. I decided to test their Brisket, mac n cheese, and jalapeño beans. The brisket was decent. Little more tough than I like, but the bbq sauce saved it. The sides were amazing. I would go back to test a new brisket and try new sides, I know not all briskets are cooked the same. Did bring back old bbq memories growing up in south Texas.

Google
I often seek out out-of-the-way BBQ joints while traveling, and Tex's BBQ stands out as the best I've found in the past ten years. The brisket was melt-in-your-mouth perfection, and the pulled pork was Juicy smoky goodness. The smoky aroma drew me in, and the friendly staff made me feel right at home. The "sweet/hot" sauce option was fantastic. Whether you're a BBQ aficionado or just passing through, Tex's is a must-visit. I know I'll be making it a regular stop on my travels. Highly recommended!

Google
The food at Tex’s was absolutely delicious! I had variety including ribs, sausages, brisket, and pulled pork. The quality of both the food and the service exceeded my expectations. As a proud Texan with high standards for BBQ, this place definitely impressed me! I’m thankful for a coworker for recommending, and I plan to come back when I visit Nashville!

Google
I recently visited this new BBQ place with my friend, and we had a good time overall. The service was friendly, fast, and accommodating, which was a plus. We tried a few different meats, including brisket, sausage, smoked bologna and turkey. While the brisket didn't quite meet my expectations, I found the sausage and bologna to be quite tasty. Additionally, my friend was particularly impressed with the turkey, which they said was cooked to perfection. Despite the mixed experience with the meats, we enjoyed the casual atmosphere and appreciated the attentive service. If you're in the area and looking for a decent BBQ joint, this place might be worth checking out

Yelp
Great find! On our way out of town, we were looking for a local place to grab lunch that wasn't near the crazy crowds around Broadway. We chose this because of the reviews and I love a good hole in the wall. The food was excellent and plentiful! The light lunch plate was perfect. The pulled pork was tender and flavorful. The deviled eggs are awesome. And their chocolate chess pie is delicious. Service is cafeteria style and friendly. Great for a quick lunch and highly recommend if you like good local finds!

Yelp
Food was decent and place was nice and clean. Service was a lunch line which I wasn't expecting but wasn't an issue, just felt rushed.

Yelp
Tex's is a come-on name for a sad hole in the wall bbq establishment. (Btw, they give holes-in-the-wall, a bad name) It conjures up the possibility of bbq from someone from the great Republic of Texas. And I don't know what world this stuff is famous in, but I don't believe this to be the case in this world. As a yankee, I've been to better Greek bbq establishments than this. Now mind you, the staff is great and that's worth the one star for this review. However, I agree with the other 1 and 2-star reviews (use filter) found below this review so I'll skip the unpleasantry's and just say this place leaves a lot to be desired. Skip it and move on. I will say this, based on a review left 14 years ago, I'd say they're consistently bad. McD's is just down the road. At least you know what to expect.

Yelp
The barbecue is excellent and my favorite in Nashville! I love the beef brisket the best however I also love the sausage, pork and bologna as well. Service is great and the sides are awesome!!
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
Great food, fast service, people behind the counter have a sense of humor (told me I was only 40 years late to their grand opening ). I got the combo plate without bologna. Sausage, brisket and turkey were great. I would try different sides when I go back because there are a log of options!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
A hidden gem!!! Only open for lunch and catering as far as I know. I've been going here for decades, and still love this place. I guess they say Texas barbecue, but they've got everything. The combo plate is the way to go!

Nick S.

Yelp
Not good at all. I ordered the smoked sausage plate, their smoked sausage is polish kielbasa not very good. The potatoe salad was under cooked and lacked flavor. The jalapeño pinto beans were days old and dry. I got the spicy bbq sauce which was poured all over the kielbasa, the sauce is okay. Over all not a good taste nothing really good about it. Don't waste the money.

Yelp
At my husband's request, we made a beeline from the airport to Tex's for a BBQ lunch. Unassuming, hole in the wall type of place where we were instantly greeted by good ole southern hospitality. The employees on the line helped me figure out which meats I wanted to try and the cashier was so incredibly kind. She immediately took our suitcases from us and set them by our table so we could carry our trays! The portions were generous and the food was incredible. The smoked bologna is a MUST. I'm not a big greens person, having not grown up on them, but my husband let me try his and they are probably the best I've ever had! And anywhere that has deviled eggs gets an A+ in my book. Make sure you catch them during their limited hours, 11-2, M-F only.

Yelp
Let's get this out of the way first and foremost-- as a born and raised Texan, Texas barbecue is all about the beef. In opening a Texas style barbecue restaurant, you promise great beef. It should have, at a minimum, a great brisket and great burnt ends. A great beef rib is not a must but it should be there. Unfortunately, the beef in a lot of locations simply lacks the quality of great Texas beef and that is the case here. Here, the burnt ends are dried out and somehow not tender- which is almost impossible as it's a higher fat content than the rest of the brisket. Sauce is necessary to keep it down. Pork ribs were OK. To me, the meats we got were too tough and not tender, makes me wonder what temperature they're smoking the meats at.. All sides were pretty mediocre, but probably best of what we got were the collard greens.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
I love that you can get 2 meats and 3 sides. The owner is always there helping the staff. Their smoked brisket and sausage are my favorite. Keep it up.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an eclectic BBQ joint that is only open 11-2 M-F. Great selection of BBQ, its not fancy, but it's real good. No fan-fare, not interested in Social Media posts. He cooks and sells BBQ so he can afford his fishing habit. If you like reliable BBQ, with a wide selection of meats and sides, this is your place. Essentially a Meat and 3 that only does BBQ.
google avatar

Jon O.

Yelp
Great bbq We got the combo plates one with brisket n pulled pork hot baked beans green beans. The other w ham chicken turkey brisket and pulled pork beans n corn bread. Everything was outstanding!! This is our new go to spot when visiting Nashville.

Yelp
If you are looking for good quintessential BBQ that's cheap, this is your spot. With nearly all the dishes under $11 and a special $14 "2-pass" plate on Mondays and Tuesdays, this place is a diamond on the rough. The catch? It's only open for lunch 11AM-2PM Monday through Friday. No weekends, no dinner. Otherwise, be prepared to have a meal like the family cookout or Sunday dinner. Meat was moist and flavorful, pulled pork was on the porky side (strong pork flavor) which I'm not a fan of but to each their own bc the texture was great. Baked beans and greens were the sides I chose but it was a hard decision because it all looked so good. Both were delicious. Def must try, no wonder the local working class and celebrities alike flock to this place.

Yelp
Tex's World Famous Bar-Que is a staple in this Nashville neighborhood and for good reason. Good barbecue for a good price. On Monday and Tuesday they have a "two pass buffet" where you can go up to the line and choose between their great meats that include brisket, sausage, pork, barbecue bologna, etc., as well as various side dishes. For my first trip I had the brisket and sausage along with mac and cheese, hot beans, and cole slaw. All were very good and honestly, I was pretty stuffed but my friend insisted I go up and try a few more meats. Well, he didn't have to twist my arm. For round two I had the barbecue bologna and the pork. This is a dive in the finest order, good food for a great price in a humble setting. I am glad that I tried here and I would recommend a visit here if you find yourself in the neighborhood. Great food, friendly people, and a great price all made for a great lunch. Three of us dining came to be about $45.00, and that included a tip.

Yelp
Tex's is a true hidden gem in Nashville. It's in a rough, stand-alone building that you wouldn't give much thought to but inside is some of the best food in the area. When you get in line you come face to face with the owner who start your plate with whatever meat and sauce you want (I recommend the combo platter with Sweet Heat). After he hands your plate over you are offered sweet bread or hoe cakes and then a self serve choice of two sides from a wide variety of options. Once you've chosen your sides you choose you drink, pay and find a seat. The decor fits the Texas barbecue perfectly, plus there's an old iron stove in the middle of the dining area with a pot of the mild sauce on it. The food is outstanding! With the combo plate you get a bit of all the meats and none disappoint. Pulled pork, beef brisket, kielbasa, chicken, smoked bologna and more, all enhanced by the Sweet Heat sauce. The sides are amazing as well with options like deviled eggs, turnip greens, baked Mac & cheese and many others. To top it off, if you show up in a Monday or Tuesday you can do the Two Pass to get a second round. I have literally eaten so much I was sick on a two pass day. You owe it to yourself to go out of you way to enjoy Tex's!
google avatar

Debbie D.

Yelp
A solid dining experience; nothing flashy but that's what Tex's is all about! Good choices of sides; the collard greens get two thumbs up! Right around the corner from the Lane Motor Museum. And yes, they're only open from11-2 so don't think you're taking your wife or GF here for dates night... LOL
google avatar

Greg H.

Yelp
I got the combo with brisket, pull pork & smoke sausage with Mac and cheese with Texas beans. Everything was great will have to stop by again when I'm near Nashville.

B K.

Yelp
Based on a recommendation of a friend, tried this while in town. I will start this by saying, I love BBQ! I have been known to drive 100 miles out of my way to try a place someone mentioned. I have eaten championship BBQ. I ordered the combo plate with sweet heat, the greens, and potatoes. - Was Good. Only regret is I did not tell them not to put sauce on the brisket.(my fault). The plate was more than enough, and was not hungry after finishing. Greens were a little bland, but still good. Service was very courteous. Price was reasonable. I would have no issues coming back to eat here if I was in the area.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Enjoyed the pulled pork. One member of my party had the brisket. So many sides to choose from. I enjoyed a fabulous Cole slaw and deviled eggs. A local proprietor greeted us, worked on a line station, and followed up at the table. This is an off the beaten path location in the metro, and I highly recommend.
google avatar

Emanuel C.

Yelp
Food is pricey and bland, but edible . Hot sides look like they all came from a can. The sauces aren't thick;they're kinda watery definitely not hot or sweet.
google avatar

Danny N.

Yelp
I have been to Tex's for about 10 years now during work lunches. It is in an unassuming location behind a closed down Jack in the Box off Murfreesboro Rd which isn't prime real estate now days. They sell their BBQ cafeteria style where you order you're preferred meat, choice of corn cakes or Texas Toast, and you get to scoop the sides yourself. The sampler is a great value where you get pulled pork, turkey, brisket, sausage, and bologna. In my opinion their pulled pork is inferior, but all of the others are quite good. I hate bologna normally and that may actually be the best part. Their beans and jalapeños are an excellent side. Overall the sampler lunch is quite good and the perfect portion of all of their meats.

Jackson H.

Yelp
Not sure what the allure to this place is besides the hole-in-the-wall feel. Food is incredibly average. The Mac and Cheese has the consistency of mashed potatoes (not sure how that is possible). The deviled eggs are soggy and not very tasty. Cole slaw is good though. Not worth the $15+ you'll end up spending.
google avatar

Mike Z.

Yelp
This place is a hot spot during lunch. Definitely the worker's lunch spot due to the "meat and 3" style servings and the decent prices on the 'que. But coming from Texas and having a name like...well...Tex's - you have high expectations. Those expectations weren't met from a brisket perspective. Their sauces have a good tang and their sides were devoured but the meats lacked personality. No smoky flavors, no pepper bark, no salt. But their sausage was great, also they got fried bologne there also. Talk about home country cookin'. This is close to work and one of the few options around worth going, so i'll be back. Not to mention when there's a line, it goes fairly quick too and everyone is super friendly.

Jacob N.

Yelp
Stopped by after the car museum, walked in, welcomed by great service and even better food. If you are in the area, it would be a huge mistake to miss. The cobblers are delicious as well as everything else. Very hospitable and overall great. 6 stars if possible

Andrew R.

Yelp
I don't know why this place is hyped up so much. I had the brisket and it was extremely dry with no flavor at all and one of the worst I've had. BBQ sauce was watery with also barely any flavor. Cornbread was so dry I could barely swallow it. Green beans were pretty good with a bit of tanginess so I'll add a star for those. Also the workers were extremely friendly and hard working people so another star for them. I'm not going back here though.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Great food. Quiet and dark but tasty food. It looks like a shack from the outside and still does on the inside but OMG the food is the bomb!
google avatar

Aaron H.

Yelp
Hole in the wall gem of a place. Some of the best BBQ in town. It's super unassuming when you drive by but go inside and get some of the best food around. I get the combo plate and pick up some deviled eggs. The BBQ beans are probably the best I have ever had. Good old boys working the counter make it all the more fun. Prices are super reasonable but if you go during lunch be prepared to wait in line. It gets crowded with local lunch traffic every day. Totally worth it though. They have brisket, bologna, chicken and all the fixings. Seating is inside and usually isn't an issue. Parking is around the building in a gravel parking lot. If you are on this side of town and like BBQ then you need to make this a priority stop. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Brett G.

Yelp
Great unique BBQ, fast service, great prices! I'll be back for sure! Sweet Bread is the bomb!

Gino H.

Yelp
Food is always good here! Quick, easy and great service here. Everyone is real welcoming and the food always tastes good. I recommend the combo plate! Let's you try everything.
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
Great BBQ. I'm shocked they don't have more reviews! It's always packed! They only Do lunch and only go until they sell out and they sell out everyday!!
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
I went here a couple weeks ago for lunch and had a very pleasant experience. unlike most BBQs in nashville this one cuts the meat in front of you and lets you pick your sides right there before paying, much like they do in Texas. The combo plate lets you try every meat on the menu and comes with two sides, which my friend and I both got. We both left full and had no stomach problems afterwards! If you are looking for authentic BBQ Tex's is definitely a great place to stop for lunch!
google avatar

Spencer S.

Yelp
Great food great service this place is a hidden gem! Only open for lunch but worth the drive from downtown!

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Atmosphere: They have a few assigned parking spots but other than that you're parking in the gravel lot and hope that everyone else knows how to park. It's sort of themed like a western saloon. The place has got some age to it but it really just adds to the theme. I find myself here plenty of times for lunch because its quick and its better than my other alternatives for bbq. (I'm looking at you BBCutie). Food: I've had all of the meats here. Most of them are okay but the ones they do particularly well are the pulled pork, brisket, chicken wings (only served on Weds), and ribs (only served on Thurs) Pulled pork has always been great. Never dry and always flavorful. Brisket can sometimes be hit or miss when it comes to dryness. Some people might be into that but I'm not a fan of really dry meats. However it has always been flavorful regardless. It's been awhile since I've had the chicken wings but I remember them being good. I want to say they were smoked but they definitely weren't fried. My biggest indulgence here would be rib Thursday. It's probably one of the main contributing factors prohibiting any weight loss. You can get the rib lite plate but to be honest its only 2 bones shy of the regular portion. Sauce wise - it's watery. I'm not a fan of the regular bbq sauce but I always go sweet heat. Bread wise - the cornbread is the way to go. Texas toast is okay. Sides - If you like spice then I would recommend you try out the baked beans w/ jalapenos. Everything else is pretty average. Service: It's set-up like a typical meat and 3. You walk up. Tell them what meat you want, but you serve yourself on the sides. Overall: I feel like within the past 4 -5 years there have been several BBQ places to open up in town. I've tried most of them but I always come back to Tex's. I would say convenience would attribute the most to that but you should definitely try it out for yourself.

Yelp
Unbelievable food some of the best barbecue in Nashville. At a very reasonable price considering what things cost today
google avatar

Tori C.

Yelp
Outstanding barbecue! The combo platter was very good. The sauce has some kick to it which is different but was quite tasty. Get there early!
google avatar

Calvin J.

Yelp
Great place for lunch. Atmosphere has big smoke flavor. Buffet style on Mondays and Tuesdays. Ribs on Thursday, can't go wrong. I usually go there on Fridays and get the combination plate of brisket and smoked sausage. Mac n cheese and collard greens with Texas toast are always my go to sides. Best plate of food for $10. It's a little hidden gem for that blue collar area.

Yelp
Breakdown of things tried Sausage - B+ : Flavorful Brisket - C- : Flavorless and dry Bologna - D+ : Borderline edible, seemed reheated (how do you screw up this?) Pork - F : Several days old, disgusting Dev egg - D- : Odd flavor Green beans - C- : Mushy, tasted like water Greens - C- : Bitter and void of flavor Mac & Cheese D+ : Looked good tasted almost like plain pasta, suspect food coloring Iced tea A- : A little waeker than I like but fine Slaw A+ : Delicious, was almost dumbstruck it was so much better than everything else Not sure what this guy is smoking every day but it is not meat because he clearly is serving stuff that is not just a day old, in some cases it seems to be several days old. Here is a tip - if you must serve leftovers, freeze it. It taste like ass when refrigerated. I'll just say it was mostly edible
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
For the name to carry "Tex" it was good as I had hoped - reminded me of those old fashioned wonderful Texas roadside BBQ joints with blackberry cobbler and pretty darn good ribs

Ted O.

Yelp
Review of Texas style BBQ from a Texan. Best brisket I've had in Nashville. This place is authentic, and delicious.

Karl C.

Yelp
This is the best Bar-B-Q in town. Great service too! The food is always fresh and they have daily specials that keep you coming back for more. Great value!!!

Cameron D.

Yelp
Tex's is a little buffet-register-sit style BBQ joint with a charming Texas theme. It's not a good restaurant. Here's why. I ordered the Combo Plate (chopped beef brisket, pulled pork, turkey, bologna, sausage; $7.99 with two sides). Grab a tray, the meat is served to you with sauce poured over the top, and then you serve your own vegetables. The portion size was just fine (picture is uploaded). The sausage was by far the most flavorful meat on my plate, but like the previous commenter said, probably not made in-house. The turkey was a little dry and the beef and pork were average to bland. Sides (macaroni, green beans, texas toast) were a bummer. Some generous salt on the green beans helped, and the macaroni was fine (can't really screw up macaroni). The toast was room-temperature. However, here's the dealbreaker: the BBQ sauce was ... inexplicable. Watery and bland, without a hint of spiciness or seasoning. Maybe it's intended to be supplemented with hot sauce? Maybe the sauce was having an off-day? Maybe I was supposed to ask for "medium" or "hot"? I have no idea, but all I can go on is what was served to me.
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
Tex's serves texas style BBQ in a comfortable and charming dining environment. went with the brisket and sausage...brisket was decent but didn't blow me away (1 star) and the sausage was average (i don't think they make their own sausage). nice selection of sides and desserts (1 star); I was unimpressed by the mac and cheese and collard greens...both needed more seasoning. the cole slaw was average at best. the service was very attentive and friendly...nice crew running this show (1 star). wish the food was as good as the service.

William G.

Yelp
We tried it today for the first time. The 2 pass buffet is the way to go on Monday or Tuesday. All the meats and a bunch of sides to try. This is a hidden jewel in Nashville. Skip the big name BBQ downtown and take the short drive to the good stuff. Go HERE!

Matt H.

Yelp
Awesome place with a good atmosphere. The place is decorated with old memorabilia and unique treasures. Staff was friendly and charming. Unique home style buffet type of serving. Food was delicious. Had the 2 meat lunch plate and was plenty enough to fill me up for 10 bucks.
google avatar

Jamie P.

Yelp
I stopped by looking get something to eat and really wasn't expected a whole lot but the food was not anything special. The restaurant smelled like things where smoked in house, but tastes like it was smoked out of state. The food was cold and not fresh. The chicken wings were not completely done and bland. Not a great experience.
google avatar

Bob W.

Yelp
Best BBQ brisket in Nashville. Casual cafeteria style dining, serving up great food at good prices.
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Some of the best BBQ in town!!! Great atmosphere and they treat you like family. I would recommend anyone to try this place and the price is right.

Yelp
What a perfect place to eat for lunch. Monday and Tuesday they have the best food for 10 bucks. 2 trip buffet. Can't go wrong with a combo. You will be so full and the BBQ is outstanding. One of the best BBQ places in town.
