Thacher is one of my two favorite wineries in Paso, and I've probably tasted at 30 or more. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful, with chickens coming up to visit us as we were tasting :) Another time when we went, the rain was pretty heavy, and it was cold, but we were accommodated very nicely in spite of the fact that tasting had to be outside due to COVID.
Now for the wines: The philosophy here is to let the grapes speak for themselves without a lot of intervention. That just happens to be the style I am most in love with. I have been twice, and the first time, the wine that wowed our entire group was called Controlled Chaos. It was a blend of Mourvedre, Zinfandel, Grenache, and Counoise. Who would even think of blending those?! Truly an experience in a glass; nothing traditional about it, but it absolutely felt like a party. The other bottle I walked away with was the Resident Alien, a Petite Sirah/Tannat blend. Another blend I've never seen! That was heavy and dark and perfect with a big steak.
The second time I went, about 4 months later, the wines blew me away again! I bought a 100% Grenache as well as a Cab/Syrah blend, and a 100% Mourvedre. More wines you don't see every day. The fact that all the wines are so high quality and consistent, along with their natural approach, has me setting the goal of being a member some day.
If I were to knock one thing, here it is: When I went back to taste the second time, I was really hoping that I would get to taste a different lineup so I could experience more variety. As it turned out, probably 3 of the wines were the same on both tastings. But I will say that they definitely were willing to give pours of other bottles they had open. It's nice to go to a winery that isn't stingy and obviously wants you to have a great time.
Again, Thacher is awesome. Totally great experience. And as confirmation: When I went to my other favorite winery in Paso holding the bag of wine that I bought from Thacher, everyone there told me how great Thacher is and that they can't wait to go pick up their club shipments from Thacher. Enough said!
