On the Grid : Nonna’s Place

"Always friendly and welcoming. Nonna’s Place is a family-owned restaurant serving fresh homemade Italian sandwiches, pasta and more. Big portions and reasonable prices. The most popular menu is veal sandwich, but we highly recommend trying all other sandwiches as well (especially the eggplant sandwich!!). Don’t forget to add extra toppings. No washrooms." - Underline Studio

Charming spot with small menu but delicious food. We stopped by for lunch and got the chefs special and the khao soi chicken. Both were really tasty, in particular the chefs special. The Thai iced tea was amazing. The staff were lovely and excited to see us. Looking forward to going back for more!

Hidden gem near Lansdowne station. I wish i would know them earlier. Their hannan chicken and khao soi are must try. The restaurant is very cozy and their staff are super friendly

Thai Niyom is such a lovely and cozy spot! The owner and the chef are super friendly and really care about every customer it honestly feels like visiting a friend’s house. I love their food, especially the Khao Kluk Kapi (shrimp paste fried rice) it’s my all time favorite! They have daily specials too, which are always worth trying. The prices are very affordable (I’d even say cheap!), and the restaurant is easy to get to. No wonder they have so many regular customers we all keep coming back! Highly recommend Thai Niyom if you're looking for real Thai vibes and delicious food.

A small restaurant dedicated to making a couple of dishes and what they do, they do it expertly. We had the mango salad, chicken rice and khao soi. All were absolutely delicious. The chicken rice reminded me of Hainese chicken rice which I last had in Singapore. Their Thai Iced tea is also to die for. 10/10 would come here again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for authentic Thai food.

Great service filled with a homely feel. We had chicken rice and it was delicious. It's a great go to meal after a workout! Not heavy and very clean as there is no MSG. Also tax is included in the price, which is great.

Thai Nyyom is a spot I visit frequently for their khao soi (best in the city in my humble opinion). They have a small menu with three main dishes: Khao Soi, Chicken Rice, and a rotating chef’s special that changes daily & is announced on their Instagram — though if you’re on the hunt for Pad Thai, they run that every Monday. Any kind of soupy chef’s special gets me excited as I find their broths to always be SO flavourful with components I love: sour, citrus, spice, & possibly the addition of shrimp paste. Two of my favourites are the Tom Yum Shrimp Noodles and Tom Zap Pork with Jasmine Rice. Always get a Thai iced tea to cut the spice!

Google
Very cute Thai spot! The service was amazing, the staff was so sweet the food is tasty and authentic. Prices were reasonable, ~$17 for a meal. Vegetarian and vegan options available as well as meat. If you’re in a rush order ahead because my order took around ~30 mins when I was dining in on a busy night. I got the Tofu pad thai (only on mondays) and it was good but not amazing (in my opinion). The flavor was a bit different than what I’m used to in Pad Thai but others I know who have been here loved it so definitely a matter of preference! Thai tea was excellent! I had a disruptive table with kids beside me opening and closing the door a million times on a cold winter day and the staff was very sweet about it and tried to make sure I felt comfortable and even brought out a heater for me so 10000 stars just for that! I’ll definitely be back ♥️ Thanks for being so kind and attentive!!

Google
Lovely little place close to UP express Bloor station - that’s why we chose it - but it exceeded expectations! Very tasty food, super friendly staff, felt so much more authentic than the commercial Thai-style restaurants around Yonge St. Much better experience here. I loved that they had a very limited menu- it suggested freshness and quality. Hidden gem, don’t tell anyone else our secret!

Yelp
Thai Nyyom located along Bloor St. W. near Symington Ave, is a small Thai eatery serving up homemade and authentic eats with no MSG. I heard about Thai Nyyom from another IG-er and had always been interested in trying the place. Serving mainly only 3 dishes (along with another special), the space is small with about 5-6 tables and some window seating as well. You do pay at the cashier first and then take a seat where your food will be brought to you. I stopped by Thai Nyyom on a Sat around 3:30pm to order take out. To my surprise, there were a handful of customers eating inside. I got the chicken rice for take out where my food took around 10 min to prepare. Staff were super friendly during my time there. Food wise, I love how the take out was packaged! The rice and chicken were wrapped up neatly using paper that kept it all together. Taste wise, the chicken with the sauce was delicious and the rice was flavourful and aromatic. The broth it came with was tasty and delicious. Everything was great and I hope to return for more to try their other dishes as well! Definitely recommend if you are around the area!

Yelp
Omg! I cannot believe I waited so long before trying this place out! I am definitely happy I managed to dine in before their long holiday break. They are closed now, until Feb. 19th! Which is so awesome for them, and makes the patrons' desire and anticipation for the reopening duely noticed. I got the chicken rice dish with a wintermelon soup. It was lukewarm, yet tasty. The person I was with got the chef special that day, which was a spicy soup with chicken and rice noodles. My dish was accompanied with a gingery sauce that was so enjoyable I went back the next day to purchase one. Small, for $2. Both were superb! The chef really knows what they are doing. We had gone on Winter Solstice, a Thursday evening and the place was full. And quite lively. I had no idea they took reservations and we snagged a spot at the window's bar. We only had half hour to eat, which did make me feel rushed, as I scarfed down my food, not the best experience. The person I was with forgot about our time limit and quickly slurped the remaining soup stock from her bowl within the last 5 minutes of our stay. While leaving, what looked like a large enough portion of the soup contents. It was so hot and spicy, she conveyed. Personally, I don't like to leave food behind. However in some Cultures it can be a good sign. I was so excited to try their Thai iced Tea and didn't get it then, so I returned the next day and wow! What a treat indeed! Floral, fragrant, refreshing and delicious. I actually went out and got coconut milk, which I was told thats how it is prepared in Thailand. Service was friendly and effecient. I will most definitely return in the New Year. I was told a new menu can be expected.

Yelp
Small restaurant with a very limited menu that depends on pedestrian traffic. I think there was literally 1 table + stools at the front window. There are like 3 main items to choose from Chicken Rice (like Hunan Chicken), Khao Soi (noodles in a curry soup), and whatever the Chef's Special is for the day. Each item is $13, so it is quite reasonable especially when comparing other Thai places in the City! Young girl who took my order was very friendly and I asked her for her recommendation. She suggested the Chef's Special which was Pork Penang Curry. It was delicious and flavours were authentic! I also got a Thai Iced Tea which was $4 - not bad. It was initially a bit sweet, but fine once some of the ice melted. Colour was legit. If you're in the mood for Thai, this a great option! Too bad that it's not really in a convenient area that has parking. You could probably park on a side street to pick up your takeout, but it is a bit of a hassle as it's located on busy Bloor St W!

Yelp
Food was delicious. Friendly wait staff. Authentic "hole in wall" type of ambiance. Only a few tables with a window facing counter. Limited menu choices. Not your typical restaurant. Location is not good. Parking limited.

Yelp
This place is a tiny restaurant with a tiny menu. The menu is basically 3 things, and those 3 things are made really well. The prices are pretty reasonable in the grand scheme of everything is expensive nowadays. There are a few tables to sit and eat, but I normally get take out. It's easy to order online. It's a grreat neighbourhood spot.

Yelp
Was craving some good Thai food and came here from a friend's recommendation. The restaurant is actually more of a take out spot so it is quite small and very limited seating (maybe 4 stools for a high top table). There were no other customers so we were able to grab a seat. The menu options were very limited to 3 items: chicken and rice, khao soi and daily specials which changes pretty often. They also had appetizers and dessert. We ordered their chicken and rice - very simple, lightly seasoned chicken slices on top of some plain white rice, a side cucumbers and refreshing wintermelon soup. The chicken pieces were a bit dry if eaten alone with just the rice, so with the addition of the dipping spicy sauce that came with it, it enhanced the dish flavours and the wintermelon soup to wash it down. The cucumber slices added a great crunch as well. The khao soi was very flavourful and creamy - loaded with a lot of toppings. We also ordered their papaya salad which was pretty good and it took me back to my trip to Thailand because of how authentic and spicy it tasted! Lastly, we also had a cup of Thai iced tea which had a nice and strong Thai tea flavour. We wanted to order their mango sticky rice for dessert but they unfortunately did not have it for the day. Will definitely want to try their mango sticky rice next time I return as it is one of my go to Thai desserts! The staff was very warm and welcoming, definitely a place I will return back to for some authentic Thai food.

Yelp
Possibly the best Thai food I've had in the city. Staff is so friendly, and the atmosphere is pleasant. The food is fresh and beyond delicious. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Been here twice. Tried the Khao soi and chicken rice. I LOVED the spicy sauce that came with the chciekn rice. I think the poor review from the other guy is because he literally ate plain rice and chicken? He is supposed to eat it with the dipping sauce and soup side... Khao soi is has a different from other places that is a bit more sour but refreshing due to the pickled vegetables.

Bruno M.

Yelp
Excellent genuine and exquisite family style thai food!! The small menu in itself is in my opinion a warranty of the love that comes in these dishes!

Yelp
$13 w tax ($11.99) For some of the absolute WORST cuts of chicken I've ever seen assembled on a plate... Very small menu (I like that concept). If I paid $5 it would be too much, it was NOT good. Rubbery skin all over BAD cuts of meat, enough to turn one vegetarian or vegan (or not...). Should be chicken breast, then maybe it's edible. What a huge disappointment. I miss my $13....

Yelp
The flavor of food here is great! Might be our new Thai place to get food. Everything is very fresh. I loved watching the lady make papaya salad. So fresh! The Khao soi is delicious is plenty. Only thing is even ordering at 5p, some of the specials are sold out! How early do I need to get here? The service is really good and nice. Parking is very hard around here.

Yelp
Definitely a small hole in the wall. The menu is short and sweet with three items total, khao soi, chicken rice and of Thai. Simple and sweet. I had the Khao Soi and it was really fresh and delicious. The fried egg noodles were nice and crisp, the soup was hot and slightly creamy, with the touch of the lime to add some extra freshness to it. This place is predominantly a take out place, though I think they can fit a few more seats in the middle. The place definitely gives you a cozy, familial vibe. The staff are very friendly here. A part of me wishes there was a larger menu, however I feel like I would always go back to the Khao soi. Price point is a little higher for the portion, but I think it's worth it as we don't have much great Thai food in Toronto, and this is definitely one of the better ones!

Yelp
Light filled little place. We ordered online and walked over for pick up during this pandemic. They have limited menus which is kinda nice for people who are having a hard time making decisions. We got chicken rice and the chefs special that day--tom yum shrimp. We substituted white steamed rice with the riceberry rice, it was delicious. A highlight of our meal was the appetizer--beefball in tamarind cause. It was flavourful and refreshing. Would eat here again in the future to try other specials.

Yelp
A great little spot for Thai food. The menu is small - they have chicken rice and khao soi (chicken or tofu), and a rotating daily special. We got the chicken rice and the special, which was a panang curry with beef or tofu. It was served with a side of purple rice with a fried egg on top. Prices and portions were quite reasonable at $11.50. Food was simple, homey, and delicious. It definitely tasted like authentic Thai food (speaking as someone who has eaten extensively in Thailand) and it's run by Thai people. Service was very quick and friendly, and a lot of people came by for take out. There is limited seating - 2 small tables and 4 bar stools only. I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you're looking for a quick, filling, and delicious meal. I am looking forward to going back to try their khao soi and other specials.

Yelp
Some of the freshest, most incredible tasting Thai food I've ever had! Only a couple options on the menu is a good sign that each dish is being made with experience and care and the restaurant is not trying to over do it with hundreds of menu items. All the love to this place! It is affordable and will now be one of my go to's for food in the area

Yelp
I've been here 3 times. Maybe the best Thai in town. It's a wonderful authentic, family run spot. The khao soi is succulent. A must try at least once. The takeout is top notch. If you're in a giant rush or want crappy ketchup pad Thai don't come here.

Emmanuel T.

Yelp
I feel compelled to leave a glowing review after my fourth visit here and never once being disappointed with their food. The menu is limited to chicken rice, khao soi, and a daily special which changes every time; every single dish is absolute perfection! As someone who has been to Thailand at least eight times thus far (I've lost count how often I have been there), take my word and trust me when I say every dish at Thai Nyyom rivals what you can get in Thailand. It's even better than what an average food stall serves in Thailand. Goes without saying that it's simply the best Thai food you can get in Toronto. If you're ever craving for a Thai meal, RUN to Thai Nyyom for your Thai fix.

Yelp
We were in the area to go to a restaurant next door and they had their soft opening. We had their Khao Mun gai and it was amazing. Everything was super fresh, made to order, place was very clean and service was great. Small restaurant with a few chairs for seating.

Naomi C.

Yelp
This little place has incredible food- always very fresh, and the restaurant is very clean. The chicken khao soi is some of the best I've ever had- the chicken is fall off the bone tender every time, in a very delicate yet rich broth. so yum!

Tim W.

Yelp
I have 2 favourite Thai places in the neighbourhood, and this is one of them. Their Khao Soi is flavourful, and has the right amount of heat (hot for my wife, nice for me). Their packaging/bagging is very thoughtful and environmentally focused. A true Thai food & takeout experience, highly recommended.

Yelp
Ordered the chicken rice and Thai iced tea and it was quite good! Menu is really nice and simple with only 2 things on the menu and one special along with some drinks. The portion is a little small for the price, and taking into considersation that it's primarily a takeout place. Dishes are around $11, so a bit more rice just to fill you up would be nice!

Mukund V.

Yelp
I tried the Pad Thai w/Tofu. One of the best I have ever had. And I LOVE THAI FOOD! We also got the Chicken Khao Soi, which was equally delicious. Smaller menu allows the chef to specialize in all the dishes. Clean setup and well run joint. Highly recommend this place for people looking to get good homely, authentic tasting Thai food. Follow them on instagram to get daily specials.

Lenny P.

Yelp
Authentic, delicious, Thai food. Simple and fresh ingredients, will definitely be coming back.

Hao Y.

Yelp
Only 3 items served, the third is always the chefs special. It's hands down the best Thai food in the city. It tastes home made. And it is! The chicken is a big drumstick and it's just so satisfying. Since they're mainly a counter, it's a lot of takeout. But the decor and sitting area is nice, but only 2 tables and a window counter. It doesn't look like much from the outside but wow. You gotta eat here.

K A.

Yelp
Incredible food. A very small menu done perfectly. We got a tofu and a chicken kao soi and a papaya salad. Both were expertly flavoured -- the kao soi was so much more complex tasting than others in the city. The chicken one came with an entire braised chicken thigh. The papaya salad was delicious. Both were a great level of spice. I have nothing bad to say about this place. I guess I wish it was open later on weeknights? That's it.
