"While the art of puppetry is common throughout much of Asia, Vietnam has the unique discipline of water puppetry. These puppets are carved from wood and then lacquered to protect them from the water. The stage for a show is a pool of water, with the puppeteers standing behind, hidden by a screen, manipulating and moving the figures with rods and strings. Water puppetry is believed to have originated in northern Vietnam in the 11th century, possibly in the rice fields around the Red River Delta—flooded paddies were the original stages—and themes often explore the daily routines of rural or coastal life or old folktales. Today visitors can most easily catch a performance in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City at one of a handful of well-established theaters."

This is a must in Hanoi. Doesn't take much time, quite unique and a fun experience. The puppets are very impressive and the music and story telling is simple yet well done. We got tickets a few days in advance to get the front row which seems worthwhile - we were still close to the edge though so you probably need to book at least 4/5 days ahead to get your desired seats. The prices range between 100-200k depending how close to the front you are. Audio guides are available for 50k but not essential as they give a pamphlet which details what stories are taking place (you get some additional insight but not much, and the visuals are self-explanatory).

Definitely buy tickets in advance! Awesome show and really skillful art in how the puppets move and tell the story. Great musicians and all the different traditional instruments that are used for the music too. Lasts about 50 minutes and recommend sitting near the front. There are headsets you can get once inside.

We stayed in this hotel for four days and three nights with free breakfast. The place is nice and is quite decent for the price. The restaurant and reception area has a good view of the Fansipan summit, giving the guest an idea how high it is. Sung was very helpful and accommodating, and even gave us some idea about the places and what to expect in Sapa. Overall, highly recommended for those that want a decent place to stay and is near to popular tourist spots.

Really great show and performance, I can't understand the low reviews. I was amazed by how well they control the puppets and the band played perfectly to what was happening in the show. You don't really need to understand the language to enjoy it. Most of the time it's just music and puppet performance but sometimes there's dialogue and singing. I really enjoyed it and it lasted about 50 minutes. Definitely a must do in Hanoi, cheapest ticket is 100k which I think is very good price and I didn't really feel the need to get a better seat.

Interesting to see the 30 minute show. You sit on theatre chairs but the leg room is very close for taller people. People being seated late was a problem because the area between rows is very narrow which made it hard for people to pass you to get to their assigned seats.

The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre in Hanoi is a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience Vietnam’s traditional art and culture. Located near Hoan Kiem Lake, this unique show brings ancient folklore and legends to life using wooden puppets that glide over water, controlled by skilled puppeteers hidden behind a screen. The performance lasts around 50 minutes and features stories of rural life, mythical creatures, and historical events, all accompanied by live traditional Vietnamese music. Instruments like the erhu, bamboo flute, and zither add to the magical atmosphere. The coordination between the music, narration, and puppet movements makes it a mesmerizing experience for all ages. Shows run daily with multiple timings: - **Monday to Saturday:** 1:45 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:10 PM, 5:20 PM, 6:30 PM, 8:00 PM, and 9:15 PM - **Sunday:** 9:30 AM, 1:45 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:10 PM, 5:20 PM, 6:30 PM, 8:00 PM, and 9:15 PM Tickets range from 100,000 VND to 200,000 VND depending on the seating category. It’s best to book in advance as the theatre is often full. Overall, the Thang Long Water Puppet Show is a delightful experience, offering a mix of storytelling, history, and art that shouldn’t be missed in Vietnam!

God this was an amazing experience. Instruments I have never seen, incredible strength and skill required to operate the puppets, just so so fun. Only comment was on the "difference" in theatre etiquette; people were filming and chatting all the way through which definitely took away from the magic for me. Just prepare for that and you'll be fine!

The show itself was nicely coordinated and well lit up. The puppets and music was very nice for those who like classical stuff. The only issue is the language since it’s in Vietnamese our children didn’t understand. Translator for them was an option but no one guided us with it. First time experienced water puppets.
