"While the art of puppetry is common throughout much of Asia, Vietnam has the unique discipline of water puppetry. These puppets are carved from wood and then lacquered to protect them from the water. The stage for a show is a pool of water, with the puppeteers standing behind, hidden by a screen, manipulating and moving the figures with rods and strings. Water puppetry is believed to have originated in northern Vietnam in the 11th century, possibly in the rice fields around the Red River Delta—flooded paddies were the original stages—and themes often explore the daily routines of rural or coastal life or old folktales. Today visitors can most easily catch a performance in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City at one of a handful of well-established theaters."

The Thang Long Water Puppet Show is a great experience for all ages in Hanoi. We reserved in October for a showing in January 2026, but you can buy tickets even on the day of. I reserved by using the email on the website, you don't need to go through 3rd party websites. Then I went to pay and pick up the tickets the day before. When you reserve, you can choose from 3 seating zones. You cannot choose your exact seats, they are assigned. We chose the most expensive zone for 200k and were placed in the second row. I would recommend showing up 10-15 minutes in advance with your tickets already paid for to get seated before the show begins and not annoy other spectators. We did not take the audio guide, I don't think it's necessary to enjoy the stories which feature characters like farmers, duckherders, royalty and the 4 legendary animals dragon, kirin, turtle, and phoenix. The puppetry is amazing and the live music is also very impressive. The show lasts 50 minutes without any intermission.

The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is an absolute must-see when visiting Hanoi! This ancient Vietnamese art form is incredibly unique and a truly captivating way to experience the country's folk culture and legends. The skilled puppeteers, hidden behind a screen, bring the wooden characters to life on the water stage, accompanied by traditional live musicians and singers, it's a vibrant and lively spectacle that transports you to Vietnamese village life. Book Tickets in Advance (Highly Recommended!): Shows, especially those in the evening (like the 6:30 PM slot), sell out quickly. Do yourself a favor and book your tickets early using platforms like Klook. This ensures you secure your spot and often provides better access to desired seating. Arrive Early and Get the Translator: While the performance is visually engaging, the dialogue and songs are entirely in Vietnamese. Arrive at least 30 minutes early to purchase or rent the translator device (headset). This small investment will significantly enhance your experience by letting you understand the fascinating folk stories and legends being acted out. Choose Your Seat Wisely: If you book ahead, aim for the middle rows for the best overall view of the action. First few rows. The show is roughly 50 minutes long, perfect for a pre-dinner or post-dinner activity near Hoan Kiem Lake. Don't miss this piece of Vietnamese heritage!

Attending the Thang Long Water Puppet Show in Hanoi was an unforgettable experience! 🎭✨ The performance was truly exciting — it feels awesome to witness a live show brought to life by talented puppet artists. The combination of traditional music, singing, and storytelling was simply mesmerizing, creating a magical atmosphere that kept me engaged from start to finish. The show runs for about 50 minutes, and every moment was filled with charm and cultural richness. It’s a wonderful way to experience Vietnamese heritage in such a unique and entertaining format. 💡 Tip: I strongly recommend reserving tickets well in advance, especially if you’re aiming for VIP or deluxe seats. The theater is always packed, which speaks volumes about how popular and loved this show is. Overall, this is a must-see cultural highlight in Hanoi — a perfect blend of art, history, and entertainment! 🌊🐉

One can experience a musical puppet show portraying the rich heritage, history and culture of Vietnam. The unique thing about it is that the puppet dance occurs on water, and the music is performed live by artists sitting on the side of the stage. The show is around 45 minutes long and the tickets sell out pretty fast. Couple of annoying facts though:- - the queues to the counter are long, but they do NOT accept any card payment. It's cash ONLY !! - the performance is in Vietnamese only, so it's pretty cumbersome for any foreigner to understand. One can rent/buy some translator machines only if they reach like 30 minutes early. We were right on time, so unfortunately we were not blessed with that Suggestion :- it's a great piece of work by the artists, and a unique show. Pls make it convenient for the tourists, so they can fully appreciate the content

Having seen few puppet shows while growing up, this one was a different experience as water adds specific element and relatable to story telling. A must watch if you have time and consider opting first few rows as sitting in back rows may not give good experience when seeing small puppets. Kids friendly and they even provide extra cushion seat for younger kids. Better to book online as when we went the place was crowded and shows were already booked. Onle downside of booking online is that you can select the section but not the seats. Overall, a great show.

Absolutely loved the water puppet show! I was glad I bought the tickets with audio guide off trip.com and got premium front 1-5 row seats. I was seated in the 2nd row middle seats. I’m glad I got the audio guide and it helped me to understand the background and stories they were conveying. Despite it being a show fully performed by puppets, the live singing and musicians made it all the more lively. I believe the audio guide could not convey the full nuances of the performances and the songs but I still could catch some comedic and underlying themes of the different stories. I especially loved the story of Hoan Kiem lake and helped me understand the name behind the lake. This is a must see for anyone who wants to better understand the Vietnamese culture and stories.

A unique experience. Would have loved it even more if we knew Vietnamese. There are French translation and English Translation display as well, however there is a part where small skit is presented with completely Vietnamese. The story is well understood but the dialogues aren't. Overall a unique way to get introduced to Vietnamese culture and traditions. Loved it.

This was a wonderful experience for people of any age. It was entertaining and humorous and they don't fail to keep you captivated throughout. The colourful puppets and intricate movements through the water is awe inspiring and impressive. Seat selection is random, if you book online they will assign you any seat, you cannot pick your seat which is a shame. 200,000 per ticket for seats A-E 50 minute show time There is no need for the audio guide, you can enjoy the show without it. But if you want to hear a bit about the stories being told, it will explain the characters, their roles and what's happening to better contextualise what you're viewing. Includes facts about historic events, cultural heritage, and areas of Vietnam where events took place. Audio guide is available in Chinese/Vietnamese/Korean/French/Spanish/English/Japanese/Russian/German Price of audio guide is 50,000 VND
