Nothing warms the cockles of my...er...tummy, quite like a steaming hot bowl of pho.
After wanting to try this place for quite some time, I finally made it. It's really cozy and cute inside, and although we sat in the front part of the restaurant, (which was busy at 6pm on a Saturday) the back room also looks nice, with fairy lights hanging from the ceiling. The staff were quite sweet and helpful too.
So before we even stepped foot in the place, I knew that I wanted pho with beef. I didn't even need to look at the menu....although I did anyway. The menu told me that although I only really wanted a bowl of pho, it cost around a fiver, so I would have to choose something else as well, as there is a minimum spend of £8 per person. This isn't really a big deal, and I can understand why they do it (it's a small business and they don't want people coming in and taking up their tables when they are only going to spend £3.50) but I still found it a little bit annoying, because it forced me to find something else that I wanted to eat just to bump the price up, even though I would have been happy with just the pho.
Anyway, we ordered shrimp summer rolls as an appetizer and it has to be said, they tasted very summery! The crunchiness and freshness of the salad and mint, along with the shrimp inside the roll was very tasty and refreshing and felt kinda healthy somehow. Don't ask me how.
The pho was good, but as is the story of my life, a little disappointing after eating pho in California. The broth was yummy, the noodles were plentiful and the meat was ok, but the plate of extras was a little lacking. Whereas I am used to ordering a giant bowl of pho (that when taken home lasts me a couple of meals) with a plate piled high with fresh bean sprouts, peppers, lime, coriander, chilli as well as chilli sauce and hoisin sauce (all for around $4), this one came with a little plate that had one tiny slice of lemon (which looked already half squeezed), a couple of bits of vaguely dry coriander, 4 pieces of green chilli and a few bean sprouts that were getting brown and wilted, and frankly looked like they had seen better days... no biggie as I didn't really fancy bean sprouts anyway. Oh, I did have to ask for hoisin sauce too, and then they waited for me to use it so they could take it back.
Now this sounds like a bit of a bad write up, but honestly, it wasn't bad and I would go back, it's just not one of the better experiences
with pho that I have had. It was hearty and filling though, and satisfied my craving.
Oh also, just a heads up - you gotta spend over £10 if you want to pay by card.
I would probably give this place 3.5 stars if I could, as it is rather charming.
