TL;DR -
- Go here for the sport, not the hotel experience. Coaching quality is excellent.
- Pre-book classes and 1:1s in advance l especially in high season.
- Facilities outside of sport feel dated, rooms are very average, food feels expensive and underwhelming for Thailand.
- Great place to train hard and meet other players; not a place for comfort.
Thanyapura is a place you come to train hard, not for the pampering. I went specifically for tennis and focused almost entirely on that, and in that respect, it delivered exactly what I was looking for!
Before arriving, I was messaging back and forth with the CS to make sure all my clinics and 1:1 sessions were booked (I planned really late, only a week before), and that turned out to be absolutely critical. It was high season, and once I was on site, everything was full…group clinics, private lessons and the Christmas competition at the end of the week. I met several people who hadn’t pre-booked and struggled to get anything meaningful scheduled. If you’re coming here, especially in peak season, do not leave bookings to chance if you’re coming for a specific activity.
On the tennis side, the quality is genuinely excellent. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable. I trained with Thong, Toly, and Ludo who, between them, helped me maximise my gains. The clinics are fun and well run, and there’s a great mix of structured training and informal match play. I was doing 4+ hours of tennis a day, adding additional recreational play in the evenings, which was honestly a lot on the body…more than I expected (I’m not 21 anymore). The sauna and ice bath were very welcome as a result.
There’s a lot going on beyond tennis…Olympic swimming pool, CrossFit, beach volleyball, yoga and other classes - though I’ll admit I only discovered some of this quite late, possibly because of the Christmas period. If you have kids or want to do multi-sport training, there’s plenty to engage with.
Where this place really fell down for me was outside the sports facilities.
The hotel itself feels tired. The rooms are very average; clean, functional, but nothing you’d ever get excited about returning to after a long day. The pool area is scrappy, sunbeds are worn, towels are old, locker rooms smell, and the sauna definitely shows its age.
Food was also disappointing. There is the Booster bar with shakes and healthy options, which is good for snacks/lunch, but beyond that you’re largely at the mercy of the hotel. The location is isolated, anything decent requires a Grab ride, and after a full day of intense training, you’re usually too exhausted to go far. I ended up relying on shakes, room service (which was just okay), or ordering Grab and being underwhelmed.
Food, spa, and hotel prices are all punching above their weight. I booked direct to ensure my training was properly organised, which was the right call logistically, but in hindsight, accommodation would have been significantly cheaper through booking sites. That’s the trade-off….
Overall, I got what I came for. If you love tennis, this is a fantastic place to train, meet other players, and push yourself. I will absolutely come back for a long weekend and would do the same again: lock in training early, focus on the sport, meet good people and accept the compromises.
