I was gifted this experience for my 50th birthday and couldn’t wait for the big day to arrive. Watching the weather in the build-up was nerve-wracking enough, but thankfully the sun was shining and all my friends came along to cheer me on. (Tip: parking is limited, so car sharing is a good idea.)
There were four of us in the group, so after the pre-flight video and safety briefing we were asked who wanted to go first — I chose to go last (and I’ll explain why later!). Our pilot, Mike, introduced himself and instantly put us all at ease. We got into our boiler suits (definitely needed, as it’s much colder up in the air than on the ground), and then it was time to watch the others take their flights before my turn came around.
When it was time to go, I was guided onto the plane, buckled in, and given another clear safety briefing. Mike asked how I wanted my flight, and I told him to go as “mad” as he wanted — I was there for the full experience! Take-off was smooth, and although moving over the dry grass was quite bumpy, that was honestly the most uncomfortable part of the whole experience.
The flight itself was incredible — we did a fly-past for my friends before heading higher and further out. I felt 100% safe with Mike, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. The wind is strong up there (top tip: try not to open your mouth too much or the wind rushes in and makes for some funny moments!). Landing was so smooth it really surprised me, and as I got closer to my friends I could hear them cheering me on.
The best part about going last was that Mike was able to come out and have a photo with me afterwards. My husband also surprised me with a special rum called Wing Walker signed by all my friends — and even Mike added his signature!
Finally, a big thank you to Lorraine, who was so quick to respond to all my email queries before the big day, and to the whole team for making the experience unforgettable.
