"Originally built in 1953, this intact Boeing KC-97 tanker—one of the largest propeller-driven aircraft ever made—was once used for refueling missions in Europe. In 2002, the airplane found a second life as the premier aviation restaurant in the United States. The owners of the Airplane Restaurant created a unique dining destination to draw in aviation buffs and share the history of the KC-97 tanker. The ex-Texas Air National Guard KC-97 mid-air refueling tanker was mated to the restaurant building with the port wing and the engine sticking through the wall and slicing through the “terminal” part of the restaurant. The wing serves as a place to mount lights and as a shelf for model airplanes and other aviation-related memorabilia. The giant gas tank was removed and the interior of the plane was flipped into a long, narrow dining room.  The tables are all covered with old aviation maps and charts and then laminated over.  The “crew” of the restaurant thanks you for flying with them and then offers a menu that is miles better than your typical airline fare. The cockpit and the tail of the aircraft have been left mostly intact and patrons can go sit in the pilot’s chair and imagine what it would be like to fly this behemoth of a piston driven airplane.  The tail has a mannequin dressed in 1950’s aircrew uniform demonstrating how it would look to be lowering the refueling boom to fuel up another aircraft while in flight.  It’s closed off with plexiglass but lit so everyone can see how it works." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This restaurant is awesome. The main floor has a bar and restaurant filled with planes and memorabilia. The upstairs is the plane that you can eat in and walk around and explore. The Waitresses are really cute with their pilot uniforms. They give you a real experience of feeling like you're on a plane getting ready to take off. The reuben sandwich was excellent. Sweet potato fries were delicious they had some kind of honey flavoring. Their chicken pieces and fries were excellent. So much food we had to take half of it home.

We've had Sam as our server for both visits and she was wonderful both times. We enjoy bringing our children here to learn and explore while eating delicious food. Considering the atmosphere they could be charging way more but they don't and we appreciate they are so reasonable on pricing. We will definitely be returning.

Google
Food was alright, not great. I had the fish and chips. It came with two pieces, for the price I thought it would be more. My wife had a grill chicken salad. It was huge. I didn't really go there thinking the food would be great. I like planes and heard about this place so I had to go for myself. The setting was unique. I can now knock it off of my list of places to go.

Devon (?) was our Captain during our dinner flight. The SW egg rolls (appetizers), and the Bison Ruben sandwich was pretty good as well. We toured the cockpit (with pics) and got the low-down on the 1953 Boeing aircraft (Tanker) from the Commanding Officer, Nicki. She was an absolute dream...well worth the time and money! Highly recommend. The Pina Colada and Colorado Bulldog were mixed well.

Google
An aircraft lover's MUST!!! Food was good but not excellent. Service was fabulous! You can eat in the fuselage of the old cargo plain, but if you have any physical limitations, it requires three steps down and then 15 Steps up to get into the fuselage. The history on the walls and hanging from the ceilings is TRULY REMARKABLE!!!!!

Ok look if you like airplanes you should probably visit but other than the above average airplane enthusiast you'll probably be highly disappointed. We waited 45 minutes to be sat after being told it was a 15-20 minute wait. Service was fine, waiters all friendly. Food was not. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip and well it just was not real good. There were chunks of artichoke that were far too big for a dip. The vegetables were old and definitely not worthy of eating. Overall a wasted $15.99. I ordered the fish and chips and while the concept of it was good (batter crisp and flavorful) it wasn't hot! Felt like perhaps it had just been sitting under a warming light and the middle was cold. Fries were good. They forgot my salad. Son had the BBQ burger his comments "hard to mess up a BBQ burger for a 16 year old, it's fine". Husband ordered the guac burger and didn't even eat half of it and didn't want to take it home which says a lot because we are not ones to waste food. All in all I walked away regretting the $120 we spent. Now for the restaurant itself, this place needs a serious deep cleaning and remodel. The table we were had had a broken spring in the seat and was very uncomfortable. The vent above us was filthy! The paint is two toned on the walls and not because it's supposed to be that way but because they didn't want to take down the pictures on the walls to paint so they painted the lower half of the wall. So much potential for this restaurant but they need to spend a little money to reinvest into the tourist spot this is.

Google
This place is well just cool. The food is Americana. Think burgers and fries. I had the wings they were excellent. Service was good. I liked that everyone one was in a pilot shirt, being a pilot myself. It is can be very busy. We went around 2 pm on a weekday. Luckily we did not care if we sat in the actual airplane. So if you want to actually sit in The plane section be forewarned. They have a full bar. All and all I would go back and bring people with me.

If you are in Aviation I think this is a pretty cool place to come and eat! The food was good and the service was good. I enjoyed it because I am in military Aviation and there is just a bunch of old cool stuff in there.

Sara N.

Yelp
Our server Kinsley was amazing. She was really attentive and friendly. She overheard me mention it was cold in the plane so she turned the heat up a degree or 2. I'm not sure if the airplane has insulation or not but it was below freezing when we ate there last night. The food was good and fast. The prices were fair and so was portion size. The place is full of memorabilia to look at while waiting on food. My daughter was only interested in playing in the cockpit. When you go into the airplane, they give you the whole story behind it as well. We don't live in the springs but if I'm ever back, I wouldn't be opposed to eating here again

Joseph R.

Yelp
Honestly a really cool idea. Love the rich history here. I loved eating IN the actual plane. The staff was absolutely wonderful and super. Loved their plane talk and jokes. I love everything hanging up and around the space. Really cool to see how many things had been collected over the years. Unfortunately the food was very lack-luster. My burger had buns toasted so well it felt like I was chewing on styrofoam or something of the sort. My wife had the salmon and that wasn't anything to brag about either. Even after dousing it in lemon, salt and pepper. Maybe we'll need to try something else on the menu?

Glenda F.

Yelp
We got stuck in a blizzard and stayed at the Marriott by Colorado Springs Airport. We decided to try out the Airplane restaurant. It was great. It was like a museum. Lots of history. The menu had a lot of options. I had their famous pasta. Lots of meat in it. The portion was huge so I took it to work the next day. There are lots of areas to hang out besides the airplane seating. They have a bar and pool (like a sports bar). Managers were nice and so was the staff. I would come back with Family when they come into town.

Danielle R.

Yelp
The food was fantastic. Definitely worth the price! Excellence customer service our server katie was amazing I definitely would hundred percent would go back. The place was very clean! The pricing of the food was pretty good overall it was a place. I would definitely go back to Probably even work there because it was super cool

Yelp
This place is an experience. A literal airplane attached to a building and you can eat in the plane. It's an old refueler and you can visit the cockpit and see the back after you order. The food is average, burgers, sandwiches, salads and fried foods. Nothing to write home about, but solid. The staff is friendly and can tell you storied about the history of the restaurant. Even the bathroom carries the theme of the restaurant, they pipe in the sounds of planes flying. Kids will love it.

Nikki C.

Yelp
If you're in the area and looking for something unique, definitely check out this airplane restaurant! From the outside to the inside, the decoration honors the theme of airplanes, even from the host to the waitresses!! It's honestly such an experience that left a smile on my face. It was exciting to see airplane history, little tokens and the dining in the plane itself. I appreciate the staff's enthusiasm to this theme, it's what made the experience special. As for the food, it was okay honestly. Burgers were normal but nothing out of the ordinary. The French fries weren't really French fries it was like chewy chips. The food could be better, but the whole experience makes up for the mediocre food. It's your classic American choices, I am picky with my food so maybe I am a little stubborn with this food review.

Yelp
Fun, interesting, unique, different... nice staff wearing airline type uniforms. So, we were staying at a nearby hotel and after driving 7 hours we just wanted a snack and a beer. When we arrived on a Saturday evening, there was a huge party in front of us (18 people). As they were being asked to wait for a few minutes, my companion and I were quickly escorted to a table "outside the airplane". We did not get to see the inside of the plane which might have had seating upstairs. However, we were just as happy to share an appetizer and a beer and sit under the wing of a huge plane. Really novel and cool to be there. I could not give 5 stars for a modest plate of potato skins and a beer. But service was quick and friendly. I wish the menu had small salad options. I did not want to get some enormous -- but when asked if they had soup I was delighted to learn that they had 2 options. These were not on the menu but were apparently on a sign board in the entry way which was of course crowed with 18 Italian travelers so we missed it. Still, I would go back again and even if I could not get into the plane seating area I would enjoy a meal and perhaps update my review to reflect 5 stars.

Nicole L.

Yelp
This was such a great stop and experience. The staff are very welcoming and service was great. There is so much detail put into restaurant that makes it such a unique experience. I highly recommend sitting in plane to dine!

Andrew C.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch on a business trip down to The Springs. We needed wi-fi to attend a Zoom call in 30 minutes and they graciously gave us the password. The staff was SUPER friendly and all dressed like pilots. Our waitress Kinsley was awesome and brought our food quickly so we could attend our meeting on-time. We dined in the plane but moved to the main restaurant for the Zoom call to get a better signal. I had the Ruben with bison - a first and very good. Such a cool place, even for a couple workin' guys!

Beth H.

Yelp
When visiting Colorado Springs, we came across this restaurant. Having a restaurant in a plane by the airport was genius!! The decor was beautiful and sitting in the plane for dinner was an experience that is hard to describe. Staff are very friendly, the restaurant, bar area and bathrooms were very clean. The food was just alright. They have a large and varied menu; I had a fries shrimp platter with mashed potatoes and ordered a side salad. My spouse hd a teriyaki chicken sandwich; others had a Reuben and a cheeseburger. All were satisfying but not exceptional although family members loved the Cole slaw. I had a glass of wine with dinner and there was only one choice: Barefoot. I would return with others for the ambiance and try a salad.

Clinton M.

Yelp
The place is neat! Our waitress made the experience better since we sat in the plane she had some funny sayings she would say like as if you were on a plane. The food was "so so". I do not recommend the prime rib sandwich although the horseradish sauce was 5 star worthy alone! Be sure to check out the plane and cockpit and read about its history. They do not offer military discounts.

Cara L.

Yelp
What a fun restaurant! We ate in the body of the plane and looked out on the wing!! So cool!! We had the spinach dip- there was a variety of chips, veggies but there was a very small portion of the dip. Barely came to the halfway point of the serving vessel. Other than that- portions were generous! Great burger and we all LOVED the fries!! Service was outstanding- attentive, drinks were refilled as needed. Great place to bring out of town guests!! Unique experience! Loved all of the airplane decor inside as well.

Catherine K.

Yelp
Going right around noon can take a big of time before getting you into your seat. If you want to eat on the plane, I suggest making a reservation. Overall, for a themed restaurant it was pretty good. They have photographs dating all the way back to the 1940s with all different type of aeronautical things. Fun items on the wall too! I would say that the plane being a part of the building was really interesting too. The kiddo enjoyed being able to go up into the plane and sit in the cockpit. It's a big and spacious restaurant and you don't feel like you have been plopped onto your neighbors laps. Friendly service. Their sweet tea? Oh goodness, talk about a cavity in a drink. It's way too sweet. Burgers are good but the fries! The fries are fantastic!

Hondo S.

Yelp
Food was solid. Service wace quality. Ambiance is comfortable. I save a special place in my heart for this place.

Keith C.

Yelp
Amazing wings and service! Our Flight attendant Lexi did excellent job! Super friendly! The whole airplane dining experience is a must do if you're in the Colorado Springs area!! Most importantly coming here supports a Veteran owned business!

Steven C.

Yelp
So why the name? Haha, super interesting how they built an airplane into the restaurant. If you're a nerdy pilot like me, come for the decor. It's crazy cool. We came straight from the airport in our uniforms. Funny that the waitresses were dressed the same. If i get a violation, i can get a job here. I chose the afterburner burger with bison meat. It was fairly yummy. Fries were unique and yummy too. 3 on food, 10 on environment. ‍‍

Roxana J.

Yelp
Undercooked steak. Asked for Medium-rare but we got served Blue. Had to get it recooked twice. Overpriced food for the quality, unfortunately. 2 stars for the decor and effort. People need to know about this food quality... Was surprised to see this place has 3.5 stars.

Todd F.

Yelp
Great place. I read a lot of the reviews and saw many complain about the service. We had excellent service! The food was great, I had the Buffalo pastrami. It was really good. We sat in the airplane, and after ordering checked out the cock pit. The food arrived super fast and was delicious. Great idea, super fun lunch.

Flo V.

Yelp
Still in the area waiting for RV Repairs. Got the estimate $$$ ugh and decided it was time for cocktails!! A short distance from the Hotel where we were staying, we stopped in at the Airplane Restaurant because it looked interesting with a plane partially built into the building. Very cool !! We sat at the bar. Lisa greeted us with a big smile and took our drink order. We needed doubles !! Nice pour....by the way! Guess she read our stressed faces!! She was full of good conversations and we enjoyed talking with her. Looking around at all the airplane memorabilia was fascinating. Though we had a huge breakfast earlier that day... we did order a snack of fries. Interesting slice on them..... almost like scoops. Hard to explain, but they were really good. They were crispy on the outside but had enough thickness to be soft on the inside. Delicious !!! They get a 4 star because we didn't order any meals... but the atmosphere with Lisa made for a very nice evening.

Heather P.

Yelp
Had the opportunity to stop in on a weekday and was promptly seated. OF COURSE, we asked to be seated in the plane. The hostess gave an introduction of the restaurant as she took us to the plane. It sounded like she had told the intro about a 1,000 times and I suspect she has, 'cause I heard it a few more times as new patrons entered the plane after we had been seated, haha. No big deal. I overall thought the experience was fun! The Rueben sandwich and potatoes were delicious. We also ordered the spinach dip, which was so-so. They both came out at the same time. Service was a little slow, but there was one server for the entire plane. It wasn't a deal breaker because we just enjoyed conversation and naturally, the food, when it came out. After lunch, I definitely went to the cockpit to sit and hang out for a bit. Now granted, it is an older restaurant but it seemed clean overall. Well, except the bathroom was weird. Everything was wet in there like it had been hosed down. Everything. In the actual restaurant, there's so many things happening, decor-wise. I didn't look at much as we were seated immediately and out the door once finished due to our agenda for the day. For me, this was a "dining experience" because of the plane (obviously) so I can't say I'm going to be a regular here, but it was worth trying out.

Amanda P.

Yelp
This restaurant is really about the experience. The food was mediocre, but the atmosphere was fun. We sat in the plane and took pictures in the cockpit. I probably would not go back, but it's fine for a one time experience.

Rhett F.

Yelp
I'm a Medevac pilot and was stuck in Colorado Springs and when I heard there was an airplane restaurant I was sold immediately! I'm a big kid inside and the idea of having lunch in a decommissioned KC-97 was too cool to pass up. Immediately I wasn't disappointed when I pulled up, the plane was more in tact and in better shape than I was expecting for a restaurant gimmick. That said, a gimmick it is, and the restaurant is VERY kitschy and cheesy, the servers wear pilot shirts and introduce themselves as your flight attendants, your table has a sectional chart under lacquer, which I actually like! The service was adequate nothing great nothing bad. It did take a while to get my food, but nothing crazy. My iced tea was perfectly serviceable but nothing special. I ordered the duck quesadilla which claimed it was world famous! It was pretty good for an obvious non authentic concoction, with a little bit of heat. I kind of regret not ordering the nachos, EVERY TABLE I heard order had them, and they looked the business. Overall if you want a fun experience come on over, especially if you have kids they can mess around in the cockpit. If you enjoy aviation it's a sure bet. Just don't expect a five star food experience.

Cody H.

Yelp
Such a neat place to eat! A restaurant near the airport that is dedicated to a full on aviation theme. The best part, is you are able to go up inside the plane and actually eat inside it! Food was amazing as well, especially the way they do their fries. Staff was very friendly and helpful too. My only reason for not 5 stars is a picky reason, but not everyone is able to enjoy the experience of eating inside the airplane as it is not wheelchair (or stroller) accessible. Overall, this is a must if you are in the area!

Bob S.

Yelp
Saw this place on a food network show so I had to check it out. What a cool place if your into planes. The whole place has military plane memorabilia. From WW2 to current. Very cool! And it also has an old plane attached to the building were you can eat at with a cockpit. The food was okay. I ordered a cup of French onion soup, a chicken Philly sandwich with coleslaw. The soup was flavorful. The sandwich was bland with not much meat. And the coleslaw was average. The service was great. The waitress came by a lot and I was the only one in the plane which was nice. The restaurant and service disservice a 4 but the food was a 3 so I gave the overall a 4. I probably will not come back but the restaurant is something to definitely check out.

Colten G.

Yelp
This is the BEST place to go to in Colorado Springs for lunch or dinner if you LOVE aviation. As soon as you walk in your greeted with I'd say about 200 pictures all across the whole bottom level of the restaurant on the walls. They will ask you if you would like to sit downstairs (With all of the pictures) or upstairs which is the fuselage of a literal older military aircraft. They actually treat their servers like flight attendants, ( Our server had a little flight attendant uniform on which was cute.) We were shocked to know that they had sweet tea considering we were in Colorado but you know we had to get it considering we were from NC and that's pretty much all we drink. It was very sweet and would probably just stick with water but if you love basically sugar water that's the drink for you. My grandson got the chicken tenders with fries. The chicken tenders were good not anything special and their fries were actually nice and crispy. Their shape was unique to almost like a half way between a chip and fry texture and shape. I got their "World Famous" quesadilla with fries as well. The quesadilla was good but it was definitely not "World famous" status. Also you can go into the cockpit of the aircraft which is definitely older and getting a little rusty but it is unique to see a cockpit of a military aircraft that old. If you love aviation, this is the place for you.

Jeff B.

Yelp
We ordered the NY Strip steak with fries and french onion soup, and the spinach artichoke dip. We never got our french onion soup. The steak was very old and tasted like it was pre-frozen. The spinach artichoke dip was cold, cheese not melted. It was overall not good and I would not recommend. Totally not on the server for the quality of food, but we did not get what we ordered.

Dennis C.

Yelp
This is a really neat place! The staff are pleasant and friendly. They keep the aircraft theme by welcoming customers on the 'flight'. Servers are 'flight attendants'. There are two sections: the downstairs, which is attractively appointed, and rich in aircraft decoration. Upstairs is the airplane part, the fuselage of a KC-97 transport plane. The best aspect of the upstairs, plane, area is that diners can visit the cockpit, play with the controls, sit in the pilot and co-pilot seats. You are paying for the experience with this place. The food is competent but uninspired and over-priced. Portions are stingy.

Ann W.

Yelp
Food was cold and greasy. Service was SLOW. They were out of every beer we wanted to order. NOT worth the calories or the time you'll waste

Alex Y.

Yelp
Ambience = lots of great aviation history. Theres an old cargo plane you can sit in. Food = came out on time and tasty, 'nuff said. Service = special shout-out to "T-Baby" who was awesome in getting order accuracy, speed of drinks (which I think is part magic, circumstance given) and making sure we were taken care of. The bartender has laser focus - makes one. single. drink. at. a. time.. So if you're in the mood to see some slowwww moving drinks made with crap attitude, hells yah you're in the right place. Granted, there was a large gathering that we had reserved this place for, you would *think* they would have more than a snail making drinks for a bunch of folks. One last rant about Flash Magoo - the Karen attitude and 1000 yard sideways glance isn't doing you any favors, especially when I asked nicely

D B.

Yelp
Loved it. From the hostess, who was just so sweet and happy, to our server who was awesome. Our burgers were delicious, and the French fries were amazing. Loved the decor and all the amazing photos. Will definitely be back.

David F.

Yelp
Go for the experience, not the food. It's a cool place chock full of memorabilia. You can eat in the plane you see from the outside but it involves about 20 stairs up to get in. Our stewardess or flight attendance was prompt and helpful and attentive. The French onion soup was barely warm. The teriyaki burger ok and the onion rings (extra $5.95) not hot. I would almost say go for a tour but eat elsewhere

Cheryl M.

Yelp
This was so fun! Staff very friendly, prompt service, and the food was good. If you want to eat in the plane, you need to let them know. You can even go view the cockpit and man the controls. Go and have fun!

Sally W.

Yelp
Food was low quality and overpriced. All food ordered was lukewarm temp and not hot or fresh. Atmosphere was okay but I wouldn't recommend.

Linda O.

Yelp
Awesome service in a unique atmosphere. Tasty food too . I initially asked to be seated in the airplane, but I found it to be a little bit too chilly for my liking. I was moved to the main floor where the temperature was good. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The Cobb salad was one of the best that I've tasted.

Xena X.

Yelp
Food quality is low. Only one low end wine offered. Service is a lot slower if you're actually sitting in the airplane.

Andrea M.

Yelp
Had the French onion soup. Dad had prime rib sandwich. I had bison burger add bacon and BBQ. Good was good but for me it was the present memories and the past memories of flying with dad.

Erin L.

Yelp
You come here for the ambiance and that's it. The plane in the building is really neat and the uniforms everyone wears are a cute touch. Now the not so good: The food was average at best. Service was rough. Half our table got served and the other half had to wait 10min before their food came. Everything just feels a bit run down, musky and dirty.

Rami H.

Yelp
If you're in Colorado Springs you have to visit The Airplane Restaurant. The food is okay and it's not fancy, but the experience of dining in an actual plane is amazing. Staff are very friendly and they welcome visitors walking around and taking pictures. Free parking lot. Dress code is casual.

Vilma S.

Yelp
Came here for my cousins Navy Promotion Pining Ceremony. What a great patriotic establishment-so much military historical memorabilia, I could spend hours here just soaking in all the history. I was grateful they had a table reserved for the 13 brave military members that unfairly lost their lives on 26 Aug 2021 in the bombing at Abbey Gate during the horrible evacuation in Afghanistan. The ceremony was awesome and I even tried on my AF blues after 17 years-it still fit, but guests didn't have to be in uniform. We had awesome drinks prepared by Ryan, the bartender and we even got to try his creation called the "Burnout Martini", super smooth and delicious! Definitely will be coming back to dine inside the airplane dining area!

Nyla R.

Yelp
Didn't expect much when I first heard of this place. Especially because the website doesn't give you much to go off either, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Staff was wonderful! Some of the nicest staff I've ever encountered accompanied by such neat uniforms. Food wasn't anything super rememberable, but it was also pretty good! I personally chose to sit in the airplane itself, but you can sit in the restaurant section instead if you'd prefer not to sit in the plane. Overall I had a great time visiting and was entertained by the idea of the restaurant.

Yelp
The bartender was great, the food was good and the environment was so cool! The airplane and all of the decor was so fun

Yelp
30 min wait for an empty restaurant every thing is dingy and dirty looking food is sub par and prices are way to high

Yelp
Very "cool" dining experience in an official airplane cabin! This is (in my opinion) a perfect Lunch/Brunch hotspot in the Springs! It looks like a little Aviator Museum with yummy food included. :] You can literally sit up there in the plane/cockpit, have a fun time with your kids and do a historical picture photography / sightseeing tour with a super kind "pilot" that will greet you from the moment you enter the restaurant's doors. We had the luck to get taken care of by a Greek waitress turned flight attendant! :) She was a joy to talk to and fantastic in and with serving us delicious appetizers as well as a super sweet fruit juice! You get huge glasses of water next to it and the chance to tour around and check out the colorful and spacious restaurant/pub/bar area! Check out the pictures below

Yelp
After a short wait we were seated in the upper portion of the airplane. It was a little warmer up there, but it was also 97 degrees outside and we were in a metal tube, so it makes sense. The waitress was very kind and attentive. The food is basic but still good. We enjoyed coming here as part of our road trip with the kids.

Yelp
Excellent customer service, and quick and attentive as well. Very knowledgeable, staff and theme appropriate decor. Take time to explore the restaurant and read everything. There is to learn about aviation and military aviation history. Check out the plane in the cockpit, definitely worth the trip. The food is good filling, and plentiful. Come for nostalgia, stick around for a meal.

Yelp
The menu is simple. The food is tasty. The service is excellent, but the airplanes and photos are incredible! A very fun and place. The kids, both big and small, throughly enjoyed it! The decorations are on point and carry the airplane theme forward. It's fun! Definitely a yes.

Yelp
This is a mediocre restaurant. The menu has good looking options but when the food comes out it's just okay. The plane needs upgrading as well. However, the staff was friendly and it's still cool to have lunch in a plane.

Yelp
The atmosphere is awesome. The food and service was great. We had a great time . A unique dinning experience and so much history.

Yelp
Came here for dinner because we thought the concept of an airplane was so cool. Quite literally it felt like I stepped into the 80s. Model airplanes everywhere, lots of decor and really a homely old style feel. Service was amazing and the food was good!
