The Alan hotel | Manchester | England | Smith Hotels

"Like your coolest twang-tongued pal, the Alan is defiantly unpretentious without sacrificing on style, hyper-local though not parochial and handsome in that rugged round the edges (but polished where it counts) way. The building’s industrial past life as a cotton warehouse is proudly paraded through exposed plaster walls, pastel-painted ceiling ducts and a whole load of chunky brick and concrete. Taupe and terrazzo define the open-house ground floor, where a makers table hosts workshops with local producers, the resident coworking crowd fuel up on Paddy & Scotts coffee and sustainably-sourced all-day casual dining plates." - Mr & Mrs Smith

Really enjoyed my stay here at The Alan. The hotel is located just around the corner from St Peters Square making tram and bus options very accessible. You can also walk to most places from here as well so location wise it is excellent! The staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel appears minimalistic as it was converted from an old warehouse if I am not wrong but that's the magic of this place! The reception counter is just a table with a laptop on it but checkin was fast and efficient. Do note that check-in time is at 3pm and you may have to wait if you arrive early but they will store your bags for you. My room was spacious and had a very industrialised look with exposed cabling and piping on the ceilings. The room is very tastefully done up though and very comfortable. The bathroom was also spacious and if there was any recommendation I would make it would be to make the bathroom brighter and for the rain shower to have better water pressure. Housekeeping was excellent and the rooms were made up rather quickly as well. Coffee, tea and even a hot chocolate sachet provided in the room as well as a bottle of water that you can top up with by requesting via room service. All in all a very pleasant experience at The Alan where I stayed for 5 nights. Thank you to all the staff for making my stay comfortable and memorable. Excellent value for me and would gladly recommend staying at The Alan.

We spent one night at The Alan Manchester. The atmosphere/vibe was upper class industrial. The bed was large and comfortable. The rooms were clean which, for me, is priority #1. They had room amenities which included tea, hot chocolate, shampoo/conditioner/body wash etc. There wasn’t a pool, laundry or gym that I saw but I didn’t look either. They had breakfast included with the room and it was delicious. The employees were polite and helpful. They also had a place to leave our bags after we checked out while we explored Manchester. Prices were good for the area. I’d definitely recommend this as a great option.

We had a great stay! The receptionist was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made check-in a breeze. The hotel is very well located—perfect for exploring the area with everything just a short walk away. What stood out most was the room décor; it was truly unique and unlike anything I’ve seen before—stylish, creative, and full of character. Highly recommend!

Lovely hotel, reasonably priced for the location and quality. The staff are lovely. The location is perfect for exploring the city. Only negative is that the bed is a little smaller than I would expect in this size of hotel. Top Tip: move the bedside tables over straight away to avoid banged elbows.

This was a great experience for a hotel. Lovely, professional staff. Modern and well kept. Highly recommend. The breakfast is decent as well. Rooms clean and very well presented. If I come to Manchester again. I will be staying here for sure.

Located right in the heart of Manchester City Centre, very close to the St Peters Square Tram stop, this hotel is only ten minutes walk from the Oxford Road Train station. It's a nice refurbished building which is well maintained. The staff were very friendly. The room was of a decent size and sleep comfortable. I wish the room was better lit. The toilets were roomy with good quality toiletries. The breakfast was excellent. Overall, it was a comfortable stay.

Absolutely terrible service. The walls are too thin you can hear the flushing of peoples toilets. The music from the lobby stays on 24/7 and is extremely loud, you cannot sleep. The service was extremely poor, every request we made was ignored by staff, for example we asked where we can find a hairdryer (a very simple question) and they simply ignored us. The manager Ashleigh is terrible, she takes 2 days to reply to a complaint email. I asked for a refund as I spent a lot of money on a signature suite for 3 nights and instead they only wanted to give me £200 back…when I spent almost £800 in total for this hotel. DO NOT GO HERE. I have stayed at a myriad of hotels and this was by far the worst experience of my life. The floor was dirty, there was dirt and dust everywhere. I was lured in by the interesting design and architecture of the hotel, only to be shocked at the astonishingly bad service and crap rooms. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Yelp
Pretty nice hotel with a 24 hour fitness center. Great location! Very close to tram, buses and local shopping like Primark, Chinatown etc. The lobby and bar are modern looking, but my room wasn't. However, my room was nice, clean and spacious. No free breakfast though, but the staff was superb!

Yelp
The Princess St. Hotel has a lot of good and some I don't like, personally. Although I was here on 'business' and not in charge of booking this hotel and it's likely unfair to this hotel that I am comparing it to where my company once booked us. That said, that's just the way it goes when reviewing! The hotel, itself, is located in a great, convenient area. It's walkable to Piccadilly Gardens and various shopping like Boots and the ever loved by every American I ever knew, ( not me!), Primark. Great pubs and eateries abound and the arena isn't far, either. Upon arriving you will tote your own luggage up about 6 stairs, as there was no ramp or bell man. The lobby level is modern in a disco sort of way, as is the bar and restaurant below. Andre is great though and me and my colleagues loved him during a recent visit where he explained some of the 'futbol' rules to us during the Fifa World Cup England/Colombia game. Happy Hour is a good one. The gym is modern and nice. My room, hmm.. not so modern. I had a hard time finding plugs! I was unplugging appliances and plugging my two items in! I even moved the tea pot to heat water to the floor since it was there in the most random place and a UK plug. The shower took me forever to figure out how to turn on from running water ( no plug for bathing) to shower. One more note, my sink clogged from just washing my hands and it took forever to drain! No plugs in the bathroom and two small towels for bathing. I did like the staff but just wasn't that impressed with much of anything else. Maybe again, it's unfair because I miss the other hotel which catered to my company a little more. And now you know ! Cheerio!
