I have visited the hotel over the past 30 plus years with fellow anglers and stayed in the self-catering cottage for the last 5 / 6 years for our annual weeks fishing on Loch Hope & Naver. There is always a welcome on arrival and guests are made to feel at home & valued by the staff. The food is excellent and Henry (chef) is happy to cater for items not on the menu if possible. When available the fresh seafood including scallops, crab, prawns, turbot & hake are superb with venison, pigeon, steaks, traditional fish & chips, steak pie, the seafood tagliatelle, all highly recommended. From bar meals to restaurant dining we have never been disappointed. |We visit for the salmon & seatrout fishing, the experience of fishing on a big loch in all weathers, the challenge of finding the fish and if we are fortunate the rewards of catching these amazing fighting fish. We enjoy the variety of wildlife including, otters, ravens, golden eagles, sea eagles, various divers and some very big dragonflies. |The hotel has inevitably changed over the years with the West Coast 500 drawing many participants and potential customers to the coastal route with Brexit changes then covid (2020) causing a bitter and difficult time for everyone but especially hard on tourism based businesses with staff shortages still evident. It seems that now locals and especially younger folk don't want to take on jobs in tourism and hotels often struggle to find suitable staff. Will we go back? Yes|Would I recommend others to visit, Yes, Yes, Yes.|If you wish to find faults you always will, but if you want to enjoy your visit then this is a worthy venue offering good value. Let the hotel know in advance if you have particular requirements especially if fishing and they will do their best to achieve them and make your stay enjoyable.|Peter Lock|Will be back in September...............

Tranquil place. I thought it’d be a significant detour from my north coast route (which it is, but the drive to there and back is fantastic). Would highly recommend. Food is a bit pricey for what it is, so bear that in mind if you’re on a budget

We needed to book a last minute place to stay due to a local storm (couldn’t camp). We came across the Altnaharra, which suited us well in terms of location as it is in the highlands but more in land.||Though set in a secluded location, the staff and host really made us feel welcome and we ended up having a lovely evening sitting by the fire, chatting to new friends.||The place has a lot of character and provided a really relaxing atmosphere whilst we all took cover from Storm Amy!||Would definitely recommend to any fellow travellers.||Also, the breakfast was top notch!

We have stayed at this hotel a few times. Our stays have always been very pleasant. The beds are always comfortable. The rooms are always clean and the food is always VERY good. The Haggis Fritters starter with the creamy whiskey sauce is fantastic. I would encourage the Chef to make that into an entree. The staff are friendly and welcoming. And it’s always nice to be remembered and welcomed back. It’s an old hotel that hasn’t been wrecked by too much modernization. It shows its age beautifully. It’s the kind of hotel we really enjoy. Comfortable lounge areas and books on the shelves. And the Altnaharra is located on the edge of the north central Highlands. A stunningly beautiful and quiet region of the Highlands that we love. We will be back.

Lovely wee hotel set in the Highlands. Stayed here to climb Ben Hope & Ben Klibreck which were approximately equidistant from the hotel. Dinner was good, breakfast also good. Service first class. Rooms were fine, a bath was welcome after a day on the hills. Recommended for those hiking in the area.

I found the staff very friendly but did not enjoy the atmosphere when manager Henry was around at all. The bathroom window in my bedroom would not open due to being stuck with paint, I found the hotel very dated in need of an urgent makeover, the breakfasts were really nice, I would not stay there again due to the bedroom being not ventilated properly at all due to bathroom window being stuck with paint.

Emailed twice prior to visit with no reply- rang several times no answer. |Arrived and first impression was good but then when entering the reception/bar it went down hill! Dark green walls with glitter painted on top just looked like sweaty walls- tired shabby! Dining room modern and ok. |Our room was small and tired and the bathroom was large but was tatty - not worth the £189. |Dinner was a non-event- very poor choice and the burger was not fit to re-sole an old boot! Breakfast was ok but nothing like sold. Overall disappointing and overpriced and I would never stay there again.

Brilliant gem of a hotel, visited enroute around the NC500. Staff were friendly, food was great and the rooms were spot on. Will definitely be back one day!

Yelp
Small hotel in the wilds of Scotland North of Lairg. Has a traditional hunting-lodge feel to it. Rooms are pleasant enough. Small comfortable bar area. The restaurant serves good food, although there is something of an emphasis on presentation to the detriment of service, which could best be described as random. Rather pricey for what it is.
