The 3 Best Hostels in Seattle (Updated 2025)

"I found HI Seattle at the American Hotel to be practical and well-located: it offers same-sex dorm rooms (there are no co-ed dorms here) with some female-only options for extra privacy, as well as private rooms (some with en suite bathrooms). Rooms are basic but the beds are comfortable, and the large kitchen is perfect for cooking your own meals (there’s also an international grocery a short walk away). A free continental breakfast is included, though it’s nothing fancy. The hostel is only minutes from the BoltBus and Amtrak stations and sits in the Chinatown/International District with lots of affordable restaurants nearby; it’s also close to Pioneer Square, the Pinball Museum, Smith Tower, the ferry terminal, and the Underground City, and is just over a mile from Pike Place Market." - Matthew Kepnes

I lived in an SRO for four years when I was in my early 20s but had never stayed in a hostel….until I found myself balking at the prices of hotels (I was going to a convention and thought booking last minute would get me a great deal and… ok mistakes were made!) I was a bit apprehensive until I walked up to the front desk to check in - the staff were SO friendly and professional. I felt completely at ease and not out of place. I was given a bath towel and a lock to use at no extra cost. The bathrooms were impressively clean - again, I lived in an SRO for years (your own room but bathrooms and kitchen shared), and was expecting some of the same horrors. The room and bed were quite comfy! Honestly I was just there to sleep after a long day of having fun, so it was perfect. Also a pleasant surprise were the activities - evening pub crawl, trip to the art museum with covered admission. The vibe was just so wholesome!! I’m in my late 30s but was pleasantly surprised to not be the oldest guest by a long shot. There are several common areas with books, TVs and games - didn’t spend much time here but they looked tidy and comfortable. Would absolutely stay again!!

Very helpful and nice staff, better services and facilities then a regular hotel. Useful information of the city around the corner. Breakfast provided. Conveniently located. I really love the handheld shower head!! Rarely seem in USA hostels and hotels ! Love it so much. I really not used to those fixed ones. Would be better if the window blinds could be better and make the room darker.

Overall I enjoyed my stay here. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable, good amount of space in the lockers as well. Large common areas and lots of info of events happening in the city plus daily events with the hostel. There’s a parking lot right across the street as well that was super handy. Would recommend!

I was most impressed by how friendly the staff were! For the great location and compared to the prices of other hotels, I was happy with my stay. My room was clean and lockers were in the rooms. The shared bathrooms were super clean and seemed to be cleaned every morning. They had some light breakfast such as bagels, oatmeal, and coffee which was appreciated. The hostel itself was definitely old but I find that it gives it character especially since everything was clean. Lastly, I will admit there is no AC and the room can be stuffy, but I found cracking a window and the very small handheld fan above my bed was adequate for me. Would recommend to others I know! I saw families and older people there too.

We enjoyed this spot for a 1-night stay in Seattle, especially since it's located so near the light rail and walkable to cute coffee shops, Pike Place Market, and waterfront shopping/dining. It is very basic and very clean -- you get a bed and a great shared shower -- and very affordable compared to other lodging we found. We liked the friendly staff, common areas, laundry option, and continental breakfast/coffee. There were lots of event and tour announcements posted for help with exploring the city. It did not seem like a part of town to wander after dark, but we were very pleased with the securely locked doors and safe space to be. Locker storage for $3 while we toured the sights was also a plus!

Really good hostel. The guy at the check in desk was really lovely and waited for me when my train was delayed. The lounge areas are nice and the kitchen area is large and clean. There are also laundry facilities with detergent, and lockers you can rent for $3 to store your bags when you check out (that come with a lock). The breakfast was bagels, toast porridge and fruit. There was also a vending machine with things you might need. Only downsides were no towels were provided and the room I was in got quite hot as there's no ac. All in all, a really good experience and really nice facilities close to the Amtrak station

First hostel at the ripe age of 47. Amazing service, clean and had everything I needed. Front counter service was so kind and helpful. Breakfast was simple but great! Honestly more enjoyable than the big hotel complementary breakfast with all the bland tasting foods. I highly recommend and I’ll be back

Dorm rooms and bathrooms are kept clean and tidy, and the front desk staff is friendly and helpful. Public transportation is across the street including light rail, subway, and bus stops so getting around is easy. The Uwajimaya Japanese grocery store is one block away and includes a food hall with a variety of choices. Bars and eateries are also downstairs and within the block. Be mindful that the hostel is in the city so like all cities, nearby are homeless, druggies, and drunkards that frequent the large outdoor public park one block away. Just be aware of your surroundings and hold on to your wallets and purses. Otherwise, the price of a night is right and your stay will be enjoyable.
