The American Hotel is very famous and gets excellent write ups—but my experience was shockingly subpar. First, travelers should be aware that there is no 24 hour desk. After the restaurant closes, there is only an emergency number and a door to the rooms from the outside that is accessible by key pad. Second, the furniture is dusty, broken down, and a bit unloved. The rooms are randomly furnished with no real direction. Multiple lamps had burned out light bulbs.||The bathrooms are very clean but the plumbing is problematic. The shower in room 15 continuously and loudly dribbled during my entire weekend stay, making the room kind of unpleasant. At check out, I was asked why I didn’t complain about it previously by the desk manager and I then had to ask him what he would have done about it given that it likely would have required a plumber. His answer was “well, nothing.” The shower in the adjacent room we booked (8) had a drain with gross gunk and still water in it so my family member traveling with me was afraid to use it more than once given that the water backed up easily.||Staff entered my room prior to my check out and began turning things over without asking me first. The breakfast is very limited. The morning coffee is cold.||Overall, I felt that the hotel guests are an after thought here and an irritant for the restaurant staff. They openly don’t seem to want to deal with us. I come to Sag Harbor every year and stayed at the American due to a weird experience at Barons Cove last year. It seems that I will be returning to Barons though in the future regardless of their staffing issues. The American hotel was one of the worst domestic hotel experiences that I have had.
