I guess I can see why people vote this highly compared to what else is on offer in the smaller-than-you-might-expect Ullapool.
Quite dark tables, it was rather busy, with lots of huge groups spanning long tables. I was travelling alone, and I was posted into the back corner, and kind of forgotten about.
I had a local gin, 7 crofts- it was okay, but didn't stand up to the night before's enamour with "Misty Isle", but don't be put off- I like super fragrant gin- so if you prefer something a bit more traditional, it's still a good punt, my server was pleasant enough too.
The place has a simple set up filling a plainly dressed clean room with blocky tables, it's a low frills establishment, and the food is good. My scallops to start were plump, local, fresh and perfectly cooked with snappable salty bacon. For main I had mussels, which were fab, although a few at the end of my meal were gritty- which soured the last few bites. I ordered the seaweed fries, thinking I would go a little scot/belgian- completely passing the fact that the mussels came with big chunks of both white and brown bread- I faced, with very little horror, that any no carb diet is not happening up here. I would recommend the fries all day long.
It is good food, and I feel like it would be a fab place to eat with a big group of people and pinch bites from each other's plates to span the extensive menu (not just seafood, don't worry), but my experience here had me feeling lonely, rather than alone for the first time on my travels. I understand that when there has been such a busy run, than even when the dining room calms down there are rushes of well deserved breaks and plenty of sorting behind the scenes, however there just wasn't the chat made with me past telling me that 7 crofts is the region's juniper tipple- I felt like a bit of an inconvenient lower profit table.
