The Ashbee Hotel, Taormina, Sicily - Explore & Book

"The pretty resort town of Taormina has been attracting British expats (D.H. Lawrence among them) for centuries, so it’s no surprise to find a hotel bearing a name like The Ashbee nestling among its pine-clad peaks. Set in a 1908 villa built for an English colonel by renowned Arts & Crafts architect Charles Ashbee, this sumptuous retreat is small by Taormina’s standards - just 24 rooms and suites - but big on service. Inspired by the house's history, the owners aim to mix the best of British and Sicilian tradition: discreet waiters serve Prosecco from silver ice buckets, the Michelin-starred restaurant's bay windows look out over citrus groves, and elegant antiques mingle with flashes of Italian exuberance (striped wallpaper, marble columns, red glass chandeliers). But it’s the breathtaking setting that steals the show. Wide terraces dotted with lemon trees spill down towards the azure Ionian Sea, and on a clear day you can see across to the Italian mainland. If you want to venture out, you’ll find Taormina’s café-lined piazzas and stunning Greek amphitheatre on your doorstep, and towering Mt Etna a short drive away. If you’re anything like us, though, you’ll spend much of your time lazing blissfully by the infinity pool, working your way through the impressive cocktail list. Highs The atmosphere is refined but far from stuffy; this is a place to unwind and be pamperedAn idyllic setting for honeymoons and romantic breaksDelicious breakfasts, with local fruit and pastries, tea and coffee in silver pots, and British-style cooked options (bacon, scrambled eggs, even baked beans)Plenty of complimentary treats: welcome cocktails on arrival, granita by the pool, and platters of canapés with evening drinks Rooms are large and kitted out with monsoon showers and snazzy back-lit TVs. Many have terraces and Jacuzzi baths, too Lows It's pretty priceyThe décor - more traditional than trendy - won't be to everyone's taste, and we found the flocked brown wallpaper in some rooms a little overpoweringThere’s a hefty daily charge for parkingFew of the rooms have sea views, but you can soak up the spectacular vistas from the restaurant, communal terrace and pool" - Abi Dare

The Ashbee Hotel (Taormina, Sicily) 3 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Built steps away from the ruins of an ancient Greek theater, perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea, with a garden full of citrus trees, the Ashbee would almost be too insistently Sicilian, too steadfastly true to its type, if it weren’t for its English heritage. Instead it’s lent a charming dose of eccentricity by its history as the villa of a British colonel who retired here in the first decade of the 20th century." - Tablet Hotels

Think of a boutique hotel with only 24 rooms in the middle of Taormina. Luxury rooms. Add to that the most magnificent view across the sea to the Messina Straits and Mainland Italy. Throw in the ultimate hospitality experience. 5* luxury and a 2* Michelin Restaurant. Supplement this with exceptional staff (A special mention for Ivana-the Queen of Cocktails). The pool with THE view. In 5 minutes you can be in the centre. Take the Etna Tour, a Wine Tour, a Pizza lesson or, the best, a personal Godfather tour. If you go to Sicily this hotel is the one for you.

We just spent 3 glorious nights at the Ashbee and really loved it!! Firstly the location of the hotel is perfect, just a 3 min walk to the to the start of the Main Street in Taormina. The property is lovely and has this old school kind of vibe. Our room was spacious, and very well kept with a large balcony and spectacular views. The only negative about the room was that the bathroom was quite small, with just one sink, but it was really adequate. Nice robe and slippers in the room as well and turn-down service in the evenings. |What stood out at the Ashbee was the incredible top-notch service. The reception staff were all so attentive and helpful. Special shout out to Carlos who was so caring and accommodating and helped us with many of our plans. We did an excursion to Mount Etna which he helped organize which was great. |The only negative about Taormina in general is that the beach is far and crowded and quite a hassle to get to. The Ashbee has a few Beach clubs it works with, we went to one they recommended called Nuova Spiagga Paradiso which was amazing with great service, but it’s quite expensive. and not included in the cost of the hotel. |Overall, the Ashbee was an amazing choice, we’re so happy we stayed there, I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it

We had the most wonderful stay here last week. The hotel itself is beautiful, extremely clean and comfortable; and in an ideal position to explore the town and use the cable car. Although slightly set away from the hustle and bustle! It feels like a real retreat, peaceful, small and welcoming. The breakfast on the roof terrace is wonderful; and the views there and at the pool are incredible. It's like a picture postcard. Food and drinks were lovely; in particular the Heinz Beck restaurant which is utterly amazing, and the best meal we have eaten in our lives! It deserves its two Michelin stars. The staff are helpful and friendly; in particular the wonderful Ivana in the restaurant and bar who was exceptional and kind. A real asset to the hotel. We would not hesitate to recommend a stay here!

Hotel is really nice The service at the pool area was poor, we where never approached asked if we would like drinks. I always had to approach the bar to get my drinks and even one time when I was coming from the toilet he asked me to come and grab the drinks from him instead of bringing it to us at the pool. The parking is expensive it’s 50 euros per day would be good to see that more clear when you are booking the hotel. But over all the hotel was good the manager was responsible when I had complain over one thing which is not a reason to mention because how she handle it.

We booked The Ashbee through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts after wonderful stays at other LHW properties. While the property is architecturally beautiful and well located, the overall experience left us disappointed—especially given the price point.||The hotel felt more like an extension of the St. George restaurant than a full-service luxury property. In the evenings, the outdoor spaces—including the bar and terrace—seemed reserved exclusively for restaurant guests, not hotel guests. The “Ashbee Bar” is really just a small, unmanned bar cart, and when we inquired about getting a pre-dinner drink around 6 PM, the staff made us feel like we were inconveniencing them.||The pool is lovely and offers a stunning view, but don’t expect attentive service. Although there’s a pool bar and restaurant nearby, it was staffed by just one person during our stay, which meant no poolside service from the lounge chairs.||Breakfast is served on a beautiful terrace, but the selection was underwhelming compared to other LHW properties. Hot dishes like eggs Benedict came with an extra charge—and were mediocre at best—which left us with the impression of being nickel-and-dimed.||Check-in was a low point. We arrived at 12:45 PM, and while we understand early check-in isn’t guaranteed, our room wasn’t ready until 4:45 PM—nearly two hours after the standard 3 PM check-in time and four hours after we arrived. The staff did offer a complimentary drink and waived valet parking as compensation, but it certainly put a damper on our first day.||At nearly $800 per night, this stay fell short of the elevated service and warmth we’ve experienced at comparable LHW and FHR properties. It’s a beautiful hotel, but based on this experience, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Everything about the Ashbee is perfection. The entire staff was extremely accommodating and informative. Always pleasant and anticipating our needs. The grounds are impeccable and the rooms comfortable and inviting. All of the food was delicious and the location is so convenient for access to the popular sites.

Unfortunately the maid assigned to our room stole from us. We had stupidly left a good amount of euro in a pocket inside our back pack instead of putting it in the safe, so ultimately it’s our fault. We grabbed some cash before heading to the beach, and when we returned, all of the money in our back pack was gone. The maid passed us on her way to clean our room when we left the room. We spoke to the manager, who confirmed with the security cameras that the only person who entered our room besides us was the maid. The manager told us basically that he has to stand with his staff, and that we are stupid for not putting money in the safe (which yes I know we are we will never make that mistake again). However, the money wasn’t sitting out. This lady had to open multiple zippers and rummage around our bag to find that pocket with the money. I would expect better at a five star resort. Don’t stay here, I wouldn’t even trust the safes to be honest, and I definitely don’t trust the staff.
