"Sourdough Pancakes Most people visiting Girdwood are there to ski at Alyeska or hike the trails in the summertime. When I lived in Alaska , these were common activities for me as well, but during the months I was in Girdwood, I also never missed an chance to hit The Bake Shop. A quintessential small-town restaurant, you can't really go wrong with anything on their menu, but The Bake Shop has the most amazing killer sourdough pancakes you will ever taste. Seriously, they're UNREAL. Another favorite is their potatoes with havarti cheese and their coffee is great also. By Deborah Miller"

My fiancée loved the sourdough pancakes. They had nice prices and the staff were super friendly. We enjoyed the view while our food cooked but it didn’t take long. I loved the different jellies they had at our table, cups of jellies that looked homemade. We enjoyed the small town feel.

We went a week ago on our way to Homer. We heard the bakery was good so we decided to try it. It is about 10 minutes off the highway. Head up the road past the mercantile shop on the left ( it is about 3-5 minutes after you see the mercantile- head straight). Where the road tees take a left then a right. The place is an order at the counter and they bring it out. There was a line but it moved quick. Even though it was raining we easily got a seat. We split the egg sandwich. My wife does not like sourdough but she raved about this sandwich. On our way back from Seward today after our Homer stop, 4 days later we went for lunch. We both got a cup of soup and sandwich. We thought half sandwich and cup of soup. But it is cup and whole sandwich. Food was great but we could have split it. Service great. Organization great. Clean and relaxing. Would highly recommend if in the area. The picture is of my wife’s cup and sandwich. Navy bean and pastrami. I got pastrami and mushroom. All good.

You ever been to a place that feels like people who are growing up in the town work there? It's hard to describe the energy but it's pleasantly relaxing, even when crowded. I'd suggest getting there early-is as we entered into a line and walked past a line on the way out. It's THAT popular. There's a reason for that: the food is consistent. Everyone's toast came out perfectly, the bacon was cooked fresh, the eggs were fluffy, and the drinks were good. Recommendation: Cinnamon bun. Oh. My. Gosh. Not too sweet, crunchy on the top and so delicately light and soft inside. That was the highlight of breakfast, aside from peripherally observing the kitchen staff jamming out to 90s/2000s punk/skater rock and curse at a few fringe toasts. Sure, if you're a person of color you may get some side glances but it won't be from staff. The food is worth it.

Super busy when we got there. Their soup is so good. Highly recommend you get at least a cup of it. We had a grilled turkey sandwich and a mushroom omelet. Both were fantastic, but I’d have to say the soup was the highlight.

I had a fan-freaking-tasting Reuben sando here not long ago. It came out HOT and smothered in Thousand Island, and tasted so good on a cold, snowy day. The meat was juicy, fresh and very flavorful. I also ordered a side salad which was generously dressed. It paired excellently with the Reuben. I couldn’t walk out without trying their famous Sweet Roll. Nothing short of phenomenal. This bad boy is the perfect combo of buttery goodness, flakiness and sweet. The caramel is light, but a little went a long way. Definitely could taste the anise. Topped with a soft, lemony glaze (not very tangy) and sliced almonds, it’s no wonder this treat is so well known. 10/10 would drop in again.

The sourdough pancakes are not really sour to my taste. They were good when eaten with the maple syrup, but they make their pancakes thin and chewy. I prefer thick and fluffy pancakes. The cinnamon buns have a slight sour taste to the dough. On the other hand, the icing is definitely sweet and sour. I liked it but my kids were not a fan of the sour taste. The chocolate chip cookies were great! They were soft and yummy.

Feels like a locals only hideout. Great food friendly service and I was made to feel welcome. The sourdough pancakes definitely have a different taste, so please don't order them and then say they taste funny. They were great and they keep real maple syrup on the table.

I’ve been going to The Bake Shop for 45 years, and it used to be one of my favorite spots. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been the same since COVID. They seem to be closed more often than not, with shortened hours from 8 AM to 2 PM—opening late and closing early. While the sandwiches are still excellent and the bread remains a highlight, the breakfast is just average. Even more disappointing, the staff has become impersonal and unwelcoming. We were rushed out at 2:15, barely after getting our food at 2:00. I miss the days when the food was amazing, and the atmosphere felt warm and inviting. It’s sad to see such a longtime favorite lose its charm.

Yelp
Pancakes there were very delicious and fresh. Sadly, they did not have chowder. Overall, good ambiance and delightful people.

Yelp
Come for the food, NOT the service. Unless you want teenage girls looking you up and down with fake eyelashes and a smug face. Otherwise a great place to eat.

Doak S.

Yelp
We had breakfast twice and it was excellent. My wife and I shared a cinnamon roll. We ask for extra icing and consider it a dinning highlight to our Alaska Adventure. It is a down home experience. I would highly recommend The Bake Shop

Yelp
The best part of our experience was sitting outside looking at the mountains, and parking lot, as we ate our pancakes. Nothing like we've ever had before; sweet, sour, and deliciousness in your mouth all at the same time. We also ordered an omelette with meat but don't remember the name. Both were fantastic.

Yelp
I had a great breakfast here while staying in Girdwood. We both enjoyed the sourdough pancakes and coffee. The pancakes were uniquely light and had a distinctive flavor. This is definitely worth a try.

Yelp
The bale house grilled ham and cheese didn't disappoint! Delicous bread. Soup was hot and full of mushrooms. V good. Busy spot. Ran out and of cinnamon rolls at 12:45 so get here early if that's what you're coming for.

Yelp
OMG the SOURDOUGH PANCAKES!!!!! I used to get them from another place in Anchorage until I found the Bake Shop and this is the ONLY place I will go to. For the rest of my life. Lol, but seriously!!!! Amazing any day any time any time of year. Seriously, you have to try them.

Yelp
2.75 stars... this place has been around for what seems like eternity. It's one of very few dine-in breakfasts spots open in Girdwood. Very small interior, you immediately get the competitive instinct to race for an empty table, should one become available. There were a couple small seats outside, but if it's snowing or raining, they wouldn't work. Pros: I love the unlimited soup option, you can keep getting your soup refilled as many times as you want till you're full, for about $10. I also love their sourdough pancakes, it really gives you a taste of Alaska. I also love their freshly baked items like the thick hearty toast and gigantic cinnamon buns. Cons: all the condiments (maple syrup, Tabasco, etc) are on the tables already, and are not being wiped down for bacteria, between customers. Also, food does not come out together, even if it was ordered at the same time. Atmosphere is quite loud, and as I said before, securing a place to sit can be a challenge. Staff was friendly enough to us on our recent visit, no complaints there. Conclusion: basic bakery-cafeteria vibes, fresh soup is a bonus, as well as fresh baked items, however it is no frills, and hard to find seating. I prefer Jack Sprat, a near-by restaurant, over this one.

Yelp
Soup Natzis! We ordered 2 sandwiches, a soup, (they advertise it to be unlimited) and a coffee drink. I wasn't hungry initially but then my husband offered me some soup, so I took some. I went and asked for a spoon and was never told there is no sharing. When my husband went up to ask for his 2nd bowl of "unlimited" soup, the manager refused bc I had some bites. He said "no sharing"- this means they are spying on the bites you take! There are no signs stating this and when I asked for a spoon, they didn't say anything. I suggested he give us soup to go so my husband could finish his lunch and the manager refused. HORRIBLE service. If they are going to police people's bodies and eating, state it up front on signs and have the cashier tell people this. Btw/ the soup and sandwiches I tried were mediocre.

Yelp
One of the few real breakfast spots in Girdwood, which makes it hard to beat. It has a cozy cafe feeling with a deli style order-at-the-counter-and-grab-your-own-table. The little bit of service that you encounter when ordering was pleasant. The ham and cheese omelette was cheesy, gooey, goodness. The sourdough pancakes were the perfect combination of chewy yet tender. The blueberry jam was delicious on the toast and pancakes. OJ wasn't watery and hit the spot. Overall feels like you can't go wrong here although after multiple days you kind of run out of options. They only have one high chair, I think two would be better, but it's nice that the family is pretty family friendly. Would recommend and would come again.

Yelp
Great find Only tried the baked goods but the crepes looked amazing Staff friendly and helpful

Yelp
The Bake Shop is ICONIC in Alaska and a must stop while in Girdwood. The food is top notch and there is no where I would rather go after a long cold day of skiing. The bottomless soups, rolls, breakfast potatoes, everything they do is amazing!

Yelp
Delicious, sourdough pancakes were excellent. Picked up a mug! If I come back to Alaska, I'll come back here.

Yelp
Our family of 6 ate lunch here today 8/23/24. Staff was polite and friendly. Food was amazing. The manager, Daniel was welcoming and the owner, she made a point to visit with us and ask where we are from and visit for a minute. Ice Ice Baby family trip

Yelp
My husband likes to come here more than I do. It's a small cafe, with an expensive menu. $15 for a BLT that does not come with a side? It's very busy here, and there's ALWAYS a line. However the interior is interesting enough to look at, with local art on the walls, that it makes the wait seem less dreary. So you order at the front, and go find a table, if you can. Today, a friend of mine was in there, and just getting ready to leave so he told me to grab his table, otherwise we'd have to wait till someone else's cleared. I ordered the BLT, husband ordered the bowl of chili and buttered roll. His chili came out very quickly, and i told him to go ahead and eat, because it takes them forever to make a sandwich, and i didn't want his to go cold, whilst he waited for me. I find it ludicrous that they don't serve both parties at the same time. If my sandwich is not ready yet, then hold his chili, till you can bring both meals at once. I am feeling extremely hostile about that, because that's not how it's supposed to work. He had almost finished his chili by the time my sandwich arrived. Now, the bacon was not warm, the toasted bread was also cold. And i don't actually like a BLT made with toast, i prefer it with untoasted bread. This toast had sat around, because it had gone very tough, and the inside of my mouth and inner gums in multiple places is scraped from the sharpness of this toast. I never thought i would say such a thing, did not realise you could cut your mouth on tough toast, but there it is. Like seriously, the length of time i waited, and when it comes, it's cold and tough. I'm actually not very happy to pay fifteen bucks for a disappointing sandwich, and to have my mouth cut, and i told my husband that i won't be coming back here for lunch again. Additionally, he couldn't hear me when we were trying to chat, it is SUPER loud in here. I left the last quarter of my weaponized sandwich, and couldn't wait to be out of there. On the plus side, the sweet roll with butter for $7 is enormous, delicious, and enough for 3 people to share, and goes lovely with a hot drink.
google avatar

Amber G.

Yelp
Their sourdough french toast is amazing. Thick, delicious, and moist!! The cinnamon rolls were baked a little more than I like them, but it was still good - we ate all of it!!! The omelets are tasty, we have eaten them twice.

Tim M.

Yelp
I've lived in Alaska for 15 years now, and I don't understand the lower reviews on here. The Bake Shop remains my favorite breakfast place in the Anchorage area--even though it's actually about 45 minutes south, it's sometimes worth the drive just for breakfast! It's unique: not IHOP or Dennys. The bread, rolls, coffee are all amazing, but then, so are the pancakes, potatoes, bacon, and other breakfast items. It is certainly sometimes crowded, and there's sometimes a bit of a line or a challenge finding a place to sit, but with scenery like Girdwood's, sitting outside is a blessing, not a curse!
google avatar

Yelp
Great sourdough bread and huge sandwiches. Kind of tight quarters inside but outdoor seating available in the summer.
google avatar

Candy P.

Yelp
My husband and I planned on getting the whole breakfast shebang here due to the rave reviews. When entered the cafe, it was empty. The skinny young lady in the front was incredibly rude and tapped her fingers on the counter letting us know to hurry up and order. Mind you, this is our first time here. I immediately looked at my husband and said, "No thanks!" Young lady, you may treat tourists badly but know that they help pay your bills. The owner oughta take another look at your customer service skills.

Yelp
We ate here after visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. It's about 20 minutes away from there, in the town of Girdwood. I was pleasantly surprised to find a little ski town with a cute bake shop in the middle. We ordered the grilled cheese w vegetarian soup (northern bean), grilled turkey and cheese w clam chowder, and a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was fresh but just okay tasting. It wasn't too special. The soups were delicious. The grilled turkey and cheese was delicious but a bit dry. Perhaps would have done better with Mayo. I liked that they served pickles on the side though. Overall, the food was decent, prices were good for Alaska (we paid less than $30), and the place was cute. There's a beautiful garden on their front patio and we really enjoyed that! If you're in the area, I suggest visiting!

Meagan K.

Yelp
The awesome staff let my fam squeak in at 12:01 to get breakfast. Everyone's food was great and it super cute inside. Other staff were super friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

Clark D.

Yelp
BLT was super dry. Bacon was old and burned. Order was wrong for my wife. They didn't offer to correct it. Soup was bland and luke warm. The cashier was rude and rolled her eyes at us. Way too expensive for the food and service. Never going back.

Maggie L.

Yelp
BEST BREAKFAST IN GIRDWOOD! We are staying at the Alyeska Resort and hate that it took us a few days to find The Bake Shop. Baked goods, omelette, sourdough pancakes and more. We both got a 2 eggs-2 slices of bacon-2 pieces of toast breakfast with coffees and split a side of potatoes and onions. There's fresh jam options on the table and the potatoes and onions are cast-iron charred (a must have). The coffee is stout and fresh! Definitely recommend

Matt W.

Yelp
The food was fantastic and the coffee was great. Had the sourdough pancakes for breakfast, took a sweet roll for on the road and came back to buy some sourdough bread to take home. Loved it!
google avatar

Trudy B.

Yelp
I would give this place 3.5 stars. They are known for their big giant cinnamon rolls, but I find them to be dry and a little bit overcooked. Their bacon is very good, and the potatoes and onions are a hit or a miss. One day I had them and they were excellent, two days later I had them and they were not. The coffee is good, and the cookies are awesome. It's small and cramped but it is Girdwood. The service is mediocre, nothing special. So to wrap up my review, there are some good things and some not so good things here. It's not my favorite place to go but not a lot was open for breakfast.
google avatar

Cassidy M.

Yelp
We've been here 3 times in the past 4 days, and we haven't even been staying in Girdwood most of that time. The sourdough pancakes are so deliciously sour and sweet and perfect. Then we came back for lunch and confirmed that this place is legit. Got a Reuben and a veggie and cheese sandwich and both were very flavorful and delicious. It's honestly just a simple place with simple food, but that food is prepared damn well.
google avatar

Daniella A.

Yelp
I give the Bake Shop a 3.5. For Girdwood it is pretty unassuming, and there are better places to dine. If you are going in for a quick bite, or a specific baked good this is the place to go. Their menu is fairly limited. Everything is pretty standard fare--there is nothing really special about the menu. It is a good place if you want a quick, no frills, simple breakfast or lunch. They bake their breads in house, which are really tasty. They serve bottomless soup, which is a plus. I enjoyed their sandwiches for lunch though I thought they were a bit pricey. They were a good sized portion! What they're famous for is their sweet roll, which is like a cinnamon roll, but definitely not as sweet. The sweet roll is tasty, and served with a big heap of butter. The only thing that bothers me about this item is that they don't warm it up. This is a type of place where you order at the counter, and they call you up to get your food. They do accept credit cards now; they were previously a cash only establishment. There is indoor and outdoor seating, but it is limited. Overall, if you are looking for a basic breakfast or lunch place in Girdwood--The Bake Shop is worth a stop!
google avatar

Mathew W.

Yelp
I've been here twice. The sourdough pancakes and cinnamon rolls are great. The coffee is good, but to be fair I'm a bit biased coming from Seattle. Not much in regard to service but everyone is kind. The place is a cafeteria setting with limited seating compared to the quantity of customers. At times, your food may be ready while you have no place to sit. Overall, I would keep coming here for the food when passing through, but the seating situation could use help.

Michael B.

Yelp
I will quote the local couple sitting next to us in The Bake Shop yesterday "This place has been going downhill for the last couple of years" I couldn't agree more We first ate here in 1989 and it was amazing and stayed that way for years Fast forward to 2022 and the baked goods are stale and mediocre, the food is hit or miss, and the service can be downright surly We were finishing our meal yesterday, which was disappointing, and they decided to close early. An employee came out of the back, where she had been screaming at other employees just a few minutes earlier, and started furiously wiping down tables, benches, and chairs As she finished wiping she LOUDLY slammed the benches and chairs down on the tabletops as if to reinforce the fact they were closed My wife was still eating a couple of minutes later when a different employee came to the table and told us they were closed and we needed to leave No offer to box the food still on my wife's plate Nothing This was when the gentleman next to us, who was obviously appalled by the antics, made his comment about them going downhill I for one am done and won't be back

Myra H.

Yelp
This place has fabulous food. Everything tastes super fresh and homemade, which is so rare in restaurants. The soup is always fabulous. Sandwiches are also excellent. Portions are generous. This is by far the best dining option between the Kenai and Anchorage. I took off one star for ambiance - it is loud and chaotic. People are shouting and running in all directions. Music is blasting. Not a relaxing experience. Sit outside if weather permits and avoid peak hours.

Yelp
What a gem in a small town. You walk in to The Bake Shop to the aroma of fresh baking bread, and sweetness from the sweet rolls. The staff welcomes you you with a cheerful hello and a great big smile. This place is what a small town bakery/cafe is all about. We had the 76 which was great, sour dough pancakes, 1 piece of bacon and 2 eggs. The pancakes were tasty, the bacon was salty. The eggs were cooked perfect to being ordered. We also got a sweet roll, did I mention I took more than half back to the hotel with me?? It's as big as your face. Warn, moist and flaky. They serve it when enough butter to kill you. It's amazing!!! If you're staying in Girdwood, AK stop in, its awesome! I wish they had stickers it's a nice memory of a great place!!
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Cute spot! Highly recommend for breakfast and lunch! Friendly service and fun laidback atmosphere. Food was delicious and portions just right. Sourdough bread is sooo good!

dan s.

Yelp
You're better off staying home and making this stuff there. At least it will be fresh and there will be no rude self absorbed server to waste your time with. I do think they do eye rolls for free. The staff is very adept at that.

Yelp
I have no photos. Because when my plate came out I was so hungry I ate everything before even thinking about it. The food was very good the ambience was very nice. To update some older reviews they do except and receive all cards and even Apple Pay. Which made me very happy. We bought a loaf of sourdough to go and enjoy it for the week to follow. At five dollars you cannot beat that price for good sourdough. And it was amazing sourdough. I have only had breakfast here but would imagine everything else is delicious. It's hard to mess up breakfast but trust me people do. This place didn't they delivered on exactly what they said they were going to with their menu items. Typically when I order pancakes I always want to add an extra egg or side I am happy that I didn't with my order today. As the pancakes were very filling after I slapped a nice portion of the jellies on the table on them. Whether you're getting ready to ski the mountain or climb a mountain. This would be a great stop for breakfast. Worth driving down from town to go.

Yelp
When I was a kid we would stop here on our way to the family cabin for dinner. I'd get the BLT every time. Today I got a cup of chili with a grilled cheese. Both were awesome. Chili was just like my mom makes it. The grilled cheese wasn't too greasy and had tons of stringy cheddar 3(cheese choices) on sourdough. THEY TAKE CARD NOW btw, even Apple Pay. Was pretty full on a Monday at noon. We also got a loaf of sourdough bread for $5. Great place for breakfast before 1 and lots of sandwich options.
google avatar

Kari H.

Yelp
Very disappointed. The girl taking our order was not friendly at all and not helpful when we asked questions. The chicken salad sandwich was just a bunch of pieces of chicken with a little bit of mayonnaise. Dry and no flavor. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the best bacon and French toast I've ever had. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
was open today on new year's. i enjoyed my cheddar bacon burger last weekend which comes with a cup if soup which was a perfect combo. today I tried the sweet roll. I had to take most of it home because it's so big. it's a bit too sweet for me, but it is called sweet roll. make sure you have a lot of coffee. it goes well with the coffee there. I would go back again especially it's location is perfect to the Alyeska resort day lodge
google avatar

Keith T.

Yelp
Had a burger with bacon and cheese, with a cuppa clam chowder. It was good, but not noteworthy. You order your food and drink at the counter. The joint is noisy when full of patrons. It was a nice place to take a short break from the drive to Anchorage from the Kenai Peninsula.

Yelp
CASH ONLY CASH ONLY CASH ONLY In my early, more flippant, years on Yelp, I would ding places left and right for not accepting credit cards. With time I haven't done this nearly as much because: - Credit cards are now event more widely accepted, even at carts/trucks. (thanks Square!) - There's usually an ATM nearby and, now that I've dropped my crappy bank (Bank of America) and switched to a kewl bank (Schwab), I don't pay any ATM fees...ever. This place however. 1) Usually has a very long line. 2) Is cash only. 3) The nearest ATM's both require extensive driving (General Store in Girdwood townsite and Hotel Alyeska). We waited in line for 15 minutes, ordered, and were then told the place was cash only, and given incredibly vague instructions on where to find an ATM. By the time we got back, the 1pm breakfast cutoff was almost over. We narrowly made it. The breakfast here is good, but unremarkable. The sourdough pancakes are thin and tasty but the sourdough "funk" is incredibly mild. (I like 'em extra funky) You can get three pancakes one egg and one strip of bacon for a little over ten bucks. I'd rather just go to Jack Sprat, pay a couple bucks more, and have a sit-down meal. At least until there is an ATM within walking distance of this place.

Yelp
Awesome service. We actually got to know about this place from a local and am glad we tried it. We were on the run today and needed to grab a quick but filling bite and this was the perfect breakfast place. Tried the farmers omelet breakfast and the vegetable omelet- both were fully loaded and tasty! The hot chocolate was great too. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
One of the few spots in town for breakfast/brunch esp if you went hiking in the morning and missed out on brunch ops past noon. Had their lunch special of turkey, bacon, ranch sandwich on sourdough with a side of potato salad. A large sandwich that left me with leftovers I ate later on a hike. It was good, nothing out of this world but good.

Jason B.

Yelp
Underwhelming and over priced. Love a place where you tip ahead of time and then get rude / slow service. Not.

Nick D.

Yelp
Good food, my fathers vegetarian omelet was the best he's ever had. My food was pretty good. In door atmosphere was a bit too loud and compact. Service was good not great.

Yelp
This shop stole money from me! I bought a loaf of bread for $7 with no tip! After I left the shop, my $7 purchase was changed to $8!!! This establishment is far too expensive with substandard food! For a total of $54.00, I ordered a loaf of bread, one cinnamon roll, an omelette with toast, and pancakes; no bacon or anything special. The pancakes, which were nearly $20 were extremely flat and like a gooey paste! The omelette was a folded egg with chopped potatoes! The toast was hard as a rock! I was so disappointed that I literally gave up and put the loaf of sourdough bread in the freezer! Being overcharged for nasty scraps is one thing; however, to STEAL money from me is simply awful and criminal!!! How many other customers have had their money STOLEN by The Bake Shop AFTER they completed their transaction is what I am left to wonder!!!

Joshua C.

Yelp
Cool vibe to restaurant, staff seems to enjoy working there. Coffee was good and hot and breakfast was pretty good but a little greasy. Still loved it.

Yelp
Super-excited to try The Bake Shop after the concierge at Alyaeska recommended it. We had a turkey bacon ranch special, two grilled cheese let and a roast beef sandwich, plus chicken soup (free refills if you aren't sharing the bowl like we did) and a sweet roll and a chocolate chip cookie. Everything tasted great!!!!! Luckily it wasn't the zoo everyone says in the reviews - healthy clip of people at noon, but no wait for a table.
