The Bakery- downtown Rutland Great place to stop in for a quick bite and a quiet morning before you start the day

Google
I've been searching for good bagels in the area for a while and was recently told this place had great bagels. Unfortunately it's the same kind of bagel that everyone else in the area sells, essentially wonderbread in a bagel shape. It's never a good sign when you order a bagel and they immediately throw it in the toaster without even asking. I don't believe these are made in house, they pulled them out of a plastic bag and they look exactly the same as I've seen from a few other places in the area. Very disappointing. That said the place is nice overall, the staff was very friendly, and the rest of the baked goods looked excellent.

Chose this restaurant for a light breakfast, and really enjoyed it. We ordered the breakfast special, which consists of eggs, cheese and bacon on a wheat English muffin. I ordered a regular coffee ( plenty of types to choose from) and my wife had a caramel latte. Coffees were good, and sandwiches were delicious and filling. We ate in and there was ample seating at 9 am.

I asked if they had any white sugar. And the lady handed me the brown sugar in the raw and explained to me, a 70-year-old, that this was sugar. I found her response dismissive and totally inappropriate. Are you protecting the public from the dangers of white refined sugar? Give up your control. Next time you order add some white sugar packets and put them out for the populace - Yes, who know the difference between powdered sugar raw sugar coarse sugar granulated sugar and all of the many types of sugar that are used in all kinds of baking etc.

Google
Great place to come grab a quick breakfast in a great coffee.

Google
What a lovely cozy place! Friendly and welcoming staff nestled right downtown in Rutland. We got the breakfast special (ham, eggs, spinach and swiss on English muffin) and the daily quiche. Delicious coffee and kale berry smoothie too. Highly recommend stopping in for breakfast or lunch!

Small place you can eat inside super awesome breakfast and amazing delicious local baked goods

Yelp
A bacon egg and cheddar sandwich on a sesame bagel sounds like a very boring order you could get at any NY style deli or bagel shop. How was this one so much better than the rest? Each component was great. The bagel was tender and fresh. The egg was lightly fried leaving some golden liquid yolk instead of a hammered dry patty. And the server was right, they have really good bacon. Add in a lovely melty slice of white cheddar and a do it yourself squirt of sriracha and you have a powerhouse breakfast. I also got a chocolate chip cookie that I of course waited many hours to eat after my breakfast and it was excellent also.

Yelp
Great coffee. Yummy food, I really liked the breakfast bagel. Service was very friendly.

Yelp
This place has gone down so much. They don't have a real baker just staff filling in and one can tell just by looking at how distorted the pastries are now as opposed to what they were before. Dry as a popcorn fart. Go to other bakeries. They are cutting back on everything in there and it is drastic. Kathy G Rutland, VT

Yelp
The food was pretty good! My breakfast sandwich wasn't great but it wasn't terrible! The service was nice and speedy all though the way to order is kind of confusing but either way I made it out of the door with an amazing smoothie and a good cookie! ALSO- amazing bread their bagels are heaven and their lemon coffee cake bread is addicting honestly I found the stuff you can buy in the store was better than what I got from the actual storefront.

Yelp
Good bagels and English muffins. They breakfast bagel sandwich was freshly made. And I was happy to find decaf coffee which is not always common in Rutland.

Fiona T.

Yelp
Very nice bakery. The staff was very knowledgeable about dietary restrictions. The special of the day was a falafel sandwich that could be modified to be vegan. The sweet potato sandwich can also be modified. The four seed bread is not vegan but they have other options. Great atmosphere and fresh made sandwiches.

Yelp
I was excited to eat here after reading reviews, and even more excited that the prices of the bagged lunch were super reasonable. But then the lunch came. The pork sandwich just tasted like a bunch of barbecue sauce. When it was time to eat my cookie, I didn't even bother because I didn't want to break my tooth on it. i banged it on the table and it was like a hockey puck! The picture I added is where I poked my finger into it to see if it could get through. I couldn't believe that I was served a cookie like this at a bakery. Definitely will not be returning.

Yelp
There were so many options to choose from for a little bakery but they surely didn't disappoint. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, a croissant and a maple hot coffee. Everything was amazing -- especially the croissant and the maple hot coffee. The atmosphere is relaxing and service was quick and accurate. If i'm ever back in town I will be back.

Yelp
Better bagels than NYC! Best breakfast sandwich we've ever had. They make unique hand stretched delicate English muffins. Can't wait to come back to eat at their Annex next door for more sit down menu options. Though more than an hour away from home, this is our go to place for quality baked goods and locally sourced menu items. We will make it a destination at least once a month to stock our freezer! They also own Roots and have a catering business in Rutland town, lucky Rutland!

Yelp
Yeah man! My son lives in town and when we asked where's a good place to grab a breakfast sandwich, both he and his girlfriend replied "you have to go to The Bakery" I had an egg, cheese and happy bacon on a sesame bagel with a sour cream and avocado spread. My wife had a daily special which was an egg, cheese and salsa on plain bagel. Both dishes were no less than excellent. And I can be pretty harsh when it come to judging a decent bagel. Even though it was still before noon, I couldn't resist checking out a dark chocolate eclair just for scientific research to see if the crazy looking desserts were also up to par.... happy to report my suspicions were correct and super yum! I should also mention our morning soundtrack was the great Louis Armstrong and similar artists. We now have another great excuse to come to Rutland, VT.

Yelp
I truly believe that the baked goods here compete with any others, anywhere. The pastries are delicious, and the bread made there is absolutely top-notch. Great coffee. Very nice vibe. Pleasant, comfy seating. This is a FAR better choice for a cafe than what any national chain could offer. I highly recommend it, especially to visitors from out of town. Downtown Rutland is architecturally beautiful, and this place is a gem to enjoy it all.

Yelp
Was very disappointed after the reviews. Pastries were dry and didn't seem fresh. Wouldn't go back.

Emily S.

Yelp
The Bakery has the best homemade English muffins I've ever had anywhere. Worth the trip here to get one with an egg for breakfast, or a sleeve to take home. Call head to make sure they have them in stock. Yum!

Yelp
I had the most amazing bacon, egg and cheese bagel on the planet at The Bakery in Rutland Vermont this morning. I would have that breakfast sandwich every day. Awesome, amazing, YUMMY!!!

Yelp
We were going to be in the area, and wanted to find a place worth grabbing breakfast. The story of Baba A Louis (Rutland location) being sold to Roots Restaurant had me intrigued. We tried their egg, cheese and bacon on a house made English muffin. They had two kinds of English muffins at the time - white or wheat. We went with the wheat. These English muffins are huge! Not the standard size you get at the supermarket. Then put 2 fried eggs on it, cheese, and some thick sliced bacon. The only down side is... there was a ton of oil from the bacon (5 stars otherwise). It soaked through the parchment paper wrapper, and the brown paper bag. I think they cook the eggs and bacon on the electric griddle - and the bacon fat doesn't seem to drip off. Not to say that I would order it again, just with more napkins. :-) I also bought some bagels (not sure if they make these), English muffins and a loaf of Sour Wheat Barley bread. Will try some of this tomorrow and update the review.

Yelp
Can't find how to write a review for their sister shop, The Annex, owned by the same person, but this place should go ahead and close its doors. The owner does nothing but exploit and berate his staff and the atmosphere is toxic. How can anyone expect food and coffee to taste good if it's made by a sad and abused staff? The owner should be ashamed of himself. The pastries in The Bakery are so-so, definitely nothing to write home about. I was a fan of the egg sandwich but that's nearly impossible to mess up. The coffee was standard and drinkable. I got a smoothie from the Annex and found a hair in it.

Yelp
Excellent ! I go to The Bakery once a week and staff is great - friendly. I can recommend it for anyone that wants good coffee, good pastries and good breakfast.

Greg B.

Yelp
I've never really had anything here that was good, except for a bagel. The pastries and quiche are generally flavorless. Coffee is okay. I've never tried a breakfast sandwich here - Maybe those are good.

Eva Y.

Yelp
The place was terrible the food was terrible it was the waiter or whatever he was was very rude and so was the owner because I complained about the the waiter. Don't even wanna bother wasting your time.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick breakfast. Bagel with egg and ham was very good - a little greasy but the onion bagel was delicious. My husband's order was wrong - they missed the cheese and hot sauce on his English muffin with bacon, egg and cheese. I also had a cherry cheese danish - both were good. My husband didn't feel think his raisin danish was fresh. I would definitely go back for more bagels and coffee.

Yelp
This place took me to paradise! I had an amazing freshly-cooked breakfast sandwich, a large bowl of soup, a dessert baked good, and an iced coffee! Everything was very delicious! They even had a maple iced coffee which I loved! I would definitely come back here! I even liked the music they had playing in the dining area! Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Great new find. Decent coffee drinks. Nice staff. Kind of a cool little coffee shops vibe to it. Good baked goods to eat. I like it.

Yelp
Best place to have breakfast in down town rutland! They have great food, pastries and coffee! Their lounge is spacious, clean with soft music in the background. The prices are reasonable the the customer service is amazing. The one thing I'de say that I didn't like is when I always came in mid morning (9am-10am), the coffee was luke warm. Non the less, when I come in early the coffee is hot and delicious! I give you 4 stars :)
google avatar

Jay E.

Yelp
The baked goods are great! My favorite is a sesame seed bagel! Also the Cin-a-bun is spectacular. every breakfast sandwich has been great. 3 stars you ask? Well the coffee is pretty inconsistent. Most gas stations can beat the consistency and quality of the coffee. To make this hot water taste like coffee you need to add espresso, which makes a half quality coffee really expensive. ~ Overall if you are craving some great b'fast baked goods, stop in!

Yelp
The make excellent fresh bread everyday, and don't sell old bread. Get their egg cheese and sausage on a bagel and try not to cry about how good it is. Then top it off with s cinnamon bun. This place could use better coffee, speeder and earls coffee is not the best and they don't have an organic blend.

Caroline Z.

Yelp
We grabbed two of their bagged lunch sandwiches and coffee on a day trip to Rutland. The service was great -super friendly staff. The sandwiches were amazing! The cheese on both the turkey and salami sandwiches was to die for and they were toasted to perfection. The chocolate chip cookies that were included were the best cookies I've ever had. A great place to go!!

Paul C.

Yelp
Boiled bagels! Place is a staple when searching for good breads. I don't think there's more detail as yelp keeps telling me I must have to post.

Yelp
I have been a regular for a number of years and I find myself more disappointed than not lately. I don't eat meat and on one occasion I asked for an egg and cheese on and a white english muffin. They had to ask what kind of muffin I wanted while making my food, should have been a red flag. I got my food to go, got a egg, no cheese with bacon. I had to throw it away because the bacon grease was all over it. Next time I ordered their breakfast special, egg, spinach, tomato and mozzarella. Got it home, no cheese and egg that had so much pepper on it that it was black. Third (and now last) time I got a egg and cheddar (I specified that I wanted cheddar cheese to maybe remind them I wanted cheese), got home- no cheese and a dry overdone egg. My advice, stick to the bagel and cream cheese or make your egg sandwiches at home!

Yelp
Great place! The coffee was good and I had there meat loaf sandwich! The staff was also very friendly and knowledgeable. It was also easy to get work done as there was plenty of seating and outlets. Definitely going back.

Yelp
What a cute little bakery/cafe/sandwich place. The ambience is inviting and the music was comfortable. The tomato basil soup was delicious. Very flavorful and the bowl was more than I could eat. The fresh baked roll was a nice compliment. My only complaint was that it wasn't quite hot enough, but that didn't detract from the flavors. The selection I'd fresh baked goods looked wonderful but I was too full to go down that path. Nice options for tea and coffee. I opted for a green tea latte which came out as expected. A short walk from the train station/Walmart plaza and well worth it.

Yelp
Just from the cookies and pastries alone ill throw in a 4. Always tasty and fresh. With te bread ill give the full 5. That sourdough is amazing. Definitely need to try some of the food next
google avatar

Yelp
Chris is the best! He makes the best sandwiches, salads and breakfasts.... I try to go when he is working. He also plays the best music. Love this spot.... Great food
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Tried the bakery for the first time and was impressed with the large variety of baked goods, sandwiches and salads. The prices were reasonable and the food was good. We ordered a breakfast sandwich, a bagel, an English muffin and a smoothie. Everything was tasty and fresh. The atmosphere is upbeat and modern and the staff is helpful and fast. The only drawback was the limited seating. We came at a busy time and it was hard to find a seat at first. It all worked out in the end though.
google avatar

Rose T.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice, mostly because of the poor choices in Rutland overall. The food is decent, and there are healthy choices. Baked goods are average.
google avatar

Karla H.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Great friendly atmosphere. Happy to see them open another shop in castleton.

Alyssa L.

Yelp
DEFINITELY will not recommend. The food is okay at best, the coffee is TERRIBLE. I've never written a yelp review before but after this experience I felt it was only necessary. DO NOT GO TO THE BAKERY. I used to frequent the bakery as I lived quite close by after this one experience INVOLVING THE OWNER. I walked in, wanting a toasted bagel with nothing on it, as I don't eat butter or cream cheese. The owner took my order and gave me a strange look as I said "just toasted nothing on it". As I handed him my card, he swiped it, and instead of handing it back as a normal, civilized human would do, he threw it on the counter so it bounced a few times. That made me quite upset, but wait it gets better. As the other man working takes my bagel out of the toaster, he asks the owner "butter or cream cheese?" The owner looks me dead in the face and goes "nothing. Dry. How disgusting. How LUDICROUS". Clearly he wanted me to hear that. Apparently I personally offended him by getting a bagel with no butter or cream cheese. As he wrapped by bagel he looks at me and goes "here's your DRY bagel." As I leave the bakery the other worker was extremely nice and said "have a good day.". I was very polite to the workers there and I don't understand how or why he took so much personal offense to me ordered a toasted bagel, but he did. Also, I just finished eating the bagel, mediocre, at best. The speakeasy Cafe, just a street over has EXCELLENT bagels and even better service. I will never be returning to the bakery again. Thanks for the wonderful service Donald Billings!
