7 Incredible Airbnb Beach Houses to Rent in 2024 - AFAR

"A 12-sided architectural retreat with Balinese hardwood floors, redwood rafters and a large dome skylight that floods the interior with light; designed to bring the tropical outdoors in, the space includes an oversized papasan chair, an indoor jet tub and a 30-foot circular pool, and is surrounded by coconut, mango, soursop, avocado, papaya and banana trees—just two blocks from the black-sand Kehena Beach (clothing-optional) and close to night and farmers’ markets and the scenic Red Road along the coast." - Lyndsey Matthews, Nicholas DeRenzo

I can’t understand all of these wonderful reviews. We found the house dirty, dark and small. Sheets on a couple of the beds were not clean. Not two bedrooms, one bedroom with a loft. Twin bed were not made. Bugs and geckos in the house. Not for family. Shower was in a hall going to bedroom. Very disappointed and when we complained the host blamed us. Very unhappy!

The Bali House...what can I say!! We stayed at 5 places during our trip to this gorgeous island, and this gem of uniquely beautiful home was AH-MAZING!!! Clearly a treat for the eyes as it is so beautiful and thoughtfully decorated to keep with the theme...(with the exception of the pac-man arcade style game...which i played often!) The beds were so comfortable, this was our third stop and my first good night sleep!! From the unique design, to having a fully equipped house with everything you need, to a brilliant beach steps away (a little down the cliff) this home is perfect!

2 of the screen doors were broken. One didn’t latch. Within 10 mins of evening arrival we were bitten up my mosquitos. The ceiling fan in the bedroom is very loud- but unfortunately is a must because there is no AC. 1 bathroom for 6 people. The toilet is low flow water pressure and takes a few tires to flush. The loft bed is completely unusable. Steep ladder, close to the ceiling and the ceiling fan up against the ladder is ready to decapitate someone. The biggest complaint is the beach access. 100 ft drop off- too steep for 5 of the 6 members of our group. Locals drinking and smoking weed and partying . Sad kids that were excited for the beach. The listing is very misrepresented. We were told no refund.

Owners promised us the entire property then claimed they needed us to stay in the 1 bedroom cottage due to an issue with the hot tub, but in fact rented the big house to someone else. We left the following morning for better accommodations and they kept our money. They should be ashamed of themselves. We waited for 18 months and they convinced us not to cancel with promises they reneged on. Left us high and dry on our honeymoon. I hope karma takes care of this, as I have no recourse to be reimbursed, since they lied and told AirBnB that our stay was completed 6 months before we actually went. Our Reciept is attached. No refund was given. Since you reported the trip completed months before our stay and AirBnB only allows 14 days to post a review, we are forced to let folks know how you run your business through other platforms. Noticed that the owners doubled down on their lies. We stand by our statement. We pressed the issue with Air B and B and after providing evidence of this owner's dispicable behavior, they were force to provide a partial refund. About 1/3rd of what we paid. That was the best they would do. AB&B sides with owners, because they provide the product and generate the income and they want to keep booking. That is why there are practically no negative review on the site. They take them all down. Bad for business, I suppose. Be wary or this property. There are plenty of others available. You do not need to risk your well deserved vacation's success with this snake posing as a person.

I've been in 11 Countries and 10 States and I've never stayed anywhere as beautiful as the Bali Cottage. We were greeted personally with shell necklaces, a hibiscus flower, and a bottle of wine to celebrate our new marriage. We can't imagine a more romantic place to share our first days as husband and wife. We fell asleep every night to the sounds of wave crashing on a cliff right across the street and sweet tree frogs singing us to sleep. We woke up early to watch the most amazing sunrises from our upstairs balcony, listen to the relaxing Hawaiian CDS provided, and have Hawaiian coffee from the little kitchen downstairs. We were able to hang out and do laundry with the guest washer. Then thanks to the tour book created by the owners we found a nearby park to have lunch, warm springs to swim in, and tide pools to snorkel in. We even got to read a good story about Pele. I enjoyed the 2 days we spent here on our honeymoon, I only wish we would have spent the whole 8 days on this island. The cottage felt like something right out of "Eat, Pray, Love." We can't wait to back!! Hot tip: You have to drive to Pahoa for dinner at Kaleo's Restaurant, such amazing food!!!

The vacation rental was perfect. We rented the cottage with was perfect for two people. We had a private hot tub and everything we needed to play house on the Big Island. The black sand beach across the street was fantastic and so much fun. It was so cool to be so close to where the lava was flowing last year. The ground was still smoking in some areas but we were 100% safe. Best experience ever!

I couldn’t have asked for a better welcoming back to the island! The cottage is situated a short walking distance to Kahena Beach; each day was filled with fresh breezes and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. The coqui frogs sung me to sleep as I gazed at the stars and watched the moon rise over the ocean. I would awaken from this dream with the morning sunrise, the birds tweeting in joy amongst all the other sounds of the tropics. To top things off, the owners were very accommodating and friendly!

Wow! What an amazing experience! This was my husband and I's first time in Hawaii and it couldn't have been better. The bali cottage is absolutely beautiful and the owner's are sooo accommodating. The foliage all along the property is gorgeous and everything looked so cute and clean when we arrived. As first timers on the big island it was extremely helpful to have a book full of places to visit and explore. The Kapoho tide pools were by far our favorite spot! The coral reefs, tropical fish and clear blue waters made for a perfect snorkeling experience. We would definitely recommend the Bali cottage to all of our friends and family!

Yelp
We recently stayed at the Bali House for three nights on our Hawaii trip and had a great time. The Bali House was so beautiful, definitely one of the highlights of our trip. We had at first wanted to book the Bali Cottage; however, it was already booked by someone else. The owner suggested for us to book the Bali House. At first, I thought that would have been too big for just the two of us, but later decided to go ahead with it. I am so glad I did. I've never stayed in a place quite like the Bali House. My husband and I traveled often and have always enjoyed staying in condos, cottages, vacation homes more than in a hotel or resort. But even then, Bali House is in a league of its own. It was beautifully decorated and looks like a place out of a movie and what you would imagine staying in paradise is like. Every morning, we wake up and would take a short walk to the black sand beach to watch sunrise and enjoy the tide pool. We enjoyed the garden and the various levels and rooms within the Bali House. At night, after a long day of hike or activities, it was so nice to be able to soak in the hot tub. If you are lucky to travel to the Big Island and want to experience a one of the kinda accommodation don't pass up on the Bali House. Warning though, you do have to set the expectations that it is not a hotel/resort. Some amenities that come with a hotel/resort (maid service, pool, concierge, etc) and also the furniture/bedding etc, are not going to be there nor will it be at the level of say, a five star hotel. However, throwing away all that, it is quite a magical place.

Yelp
I will first start by saying this is not a house for a family. Our party of six, my daughter her husband, two kids ages 10 and 9 and my husband I. First of all the house is not as large as they make it out to be. both my husband and I and our daughter and son in law wanted the two king beds. I might add it is not two bedrooms in the main house, one is a loft. the kids didn't fell comfortable sleeping in the cottage and wanted to sleep in the main house with us. the twin beds did not have a sheets or blankets. one of the king beds had not been changed from the last guests and had pubic hair in it, gross! The house was not clean to the average standers of a rental. The shower was in the hall to the master bedroom which was made of mostly black rock and had no glass in the window, just screen and shutter. it was very dark and the step down to the room was very high almost to the point of being dangerous for my husband and I. Bugs and geckos were in the house. it was very disappointing and we ended up leaving the next day. The host blamed us for the dirt and would not refund our money for the nights we did not stay. I just can't understand all the great reviews for this house!

Yelp
We stayed at the Bali Cottage for our 5 nights on the Big Island. Our favorite part about the cottage was the gorgeous view from the balcony. We spent a good portion of our time relaxing on the balcony and listening to the sounds of the ocean. The frogs were beautiful but loud for people who are used to sleeping in silence. The fan provided in the cottage helped! The kitchen area is very well equipped with things you wouldn't expect (like a coffee grinder) which was a nice surprise. One thing to note is that while I only saw the people staying in the Bali House (right behind the cottage) once, I did hear them and other neighbors. All in all, this cottage is a great value for the location and the amenities, and is a perfect getaway for a couple or even one person looking to relax. We will never forget our Big Island vacation and our time spent in the Bali Cottage!

Yelp
I have been married to the same woman for 42years. She has accompanied me literally ALL OVER THE WORLD! We stayed at The Bali Cottage at Kehena Beach for 8 days...we both felt it wasn't long enough! The Bali Cottage was perfect, spotless, no detail was spared. Our host was what everyone hopes for ...Welcoming, charming, at tentative, and being local knows the out of the way places and how to get there unlike some guidebooks. She was honest about the "Clothing Optional" beach and tells all her guests who feel uncomfortable there about another "Secret Beach" where you can have the place all to yourself! You also can go down to Kehena Beach in the morning and it is ALWAYS empty. We watched the sun rise on the beach while the spinner dolphins jumped, we even saw a Humpback Whale and her calf!!! This was only 75ft out in the water! There is so much to do here, Kehena Beach, "Secret Beach, Shipman Beach, Pohoiki, Kaimu Beach, Kumukahi Lighthouse (ALL HAVE SAND...Where you can RELAX!)...I could go on, but then I would sound like a guidebook. My point is...THERE IS WAY TOO MUCH TO DO HERE, to run out of things to do. My wife and I haven't had this much fun since we made our two children. The weather, the sights, the people...We felt like Honeymooners all over again. This place was a Bargain! We even told Janet she is not charging enough; she told us a lot of her guest make the same comment. This place books up fast and for a good reason! It's PARADISE any way you look at it. This part of the Big Island feels more like what Maui felt like in the mid 60's. I am a Marine, Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) and am very Marine looking. Yet the Hippies & locals were nicer than anywhere else in all of the State of Hawaii. Here it really is "to each..his own" Very non-judgmental. All in all this was the Perfect Vacation Destination. Yelp
We booked this property through VRBO for three nights in December 2016. The owner confirmed our reservation 6 days prior to arrival. We called them when we were on our way there, on Christmas Day, per their instructions to get the keys and were looking forward to enjoying this beautiful property. The owner pretended not to know me at first. Then she pretended not to ever use emails. Then she finally found my reservation and offered to put me up in a hotel in Hilo and refund the difference. Thank god the Fairmont had a room for us and took us or we would have been sleeping in our car on Christmas Day! I did not trust her at that point to drive to Hilo in 2 hours and stay in some random hotel. I would never trust these people. We were lucky we could afford a hotel at last minute rates or I would have been sleeping in the car with my kids on Christmas! It. These people cost us both time, stress and money doing business with them. Not worth it!
