Place of eternal knowledge and wisdom. Students come here to study and soak in the details from books and databases. Books are presented neatly and in an precise order and can be looked up in a catalogue, paper-based and modern in so called personal computers. No food and drinks allowed. Patrons ensure that rules are obeyed.

The Bancroft Library is a very important place on the UCBerkeley campus. I was a volunteer there years ago.

This is not a good study space. It is not even a study space. But it's not even trying to be a study space. With that out of the way let's talk about the Bancroft for what it is, a place to look at weird historic stuff. You can NOT browse the stacks at Bancroft. So if there's some book you want to see that happens to be shelved in Bancroft, you need to search for it using UC Library search, file a special collections request on Aeon (click the link called "special collections request") Note: Descriptors of the Bancroft library often refer to people as "researchers." "researcher" is a term used loosely. If there's a book you want to see that happens to be shelved in the Bancroft, then YOU ARE A "researcher." You can file a special collections request. This has been made more clear since my first visit to Bancroft. Now the one of the options for "research purpose" is "Personal Interest," which I appreciate. but yeah there's really cool stuff in there. Go onto UC library search and look up something you're interested in and there's probably something there! Some cool stuff I've looked at up there were the Sanborn Maps. These are really-detailed maps of cities some 100 or so years ago made for purposes of fire insurance and stuff, and it's really interesting to see how the stuff has changed! Lots of the stuff from there are old. They tell you how to make it so they don't get significantly wrecked. Follow what they say and keep the texts nice so they can be seen by future generations! Few reasons I'm giving 3 stars instead of more: 1. You can't distribute the pictures you take of the items. I don't know whether this is a Bancroft-specific thing or whether it's Just Copyright Things In General, but it's kinda annoying when you find something cool and want to send a picture to a friend but can't so have to be like "you should file a special collections request on aeon for this thing and look at it!" 2. the whole use of the word "researcher." For the first two months or so, I thought that you needed to be an actual researcher to look at their collection. 3. It's kinda annoying to keep our bags out. I know it's for a good purpose to prevent theft but it's kinda annoying so im subtracting points for it even though it's justified :|

One of the most important libraries in the country. Amazing collections that no one realizes are here. If you want to know about Ishi or Rosie the Riveter or Western America history, Chinatown or just about anything else, it's worth a visit.
