"For Christians, the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ at Bethany Beyond the Jordan is one of the most significant places in the world. Located amid a prepossessing sweep of scrubby plains, next to the sensitive border between Israel and the Palestinian Territories, this is the spot where John the Baptist baptized Jesus, turning the Jordan River into holy water and reviving the souls of all believers. It’s been a pilgrimage site since the Byzantines built a church here in the 5th century. The ruins are spread across a wide area, so tickets include a compulsory guided tour as well as a shuttle bus that ferries visitors from one attraction to the next. Expect to see the scattered remnants of churches, monasteries, and chapels, as well as the excavated baptismal site and several modern churches belonging to different Christian traditions. The highlight of the tour is visiting the banks of the Jordan River, though these days it’s more of a stream than the free-flowing water of biblical accounts. You can actually get in the water or simply fill bottles from the font, but drinking is not advised due to pollution. On the opposite bank, you’ll see pilgrims doing the same at the Israeli-run version of the site in the Palestinian Territories."

The symbolic meaning of this site is beyond anything. We went there to visit the baptism site. We were greeted at the entrance and welcomed by our guide who then took us as part of a group in a bus to the holy site. He explained many historical things during the trip and gave us many useful information. It was well organized and we enjoyed the visit.

The visit is worth your time. There will be abus drive to and from the site and you will have a guide along with. Stay on the course and listen to your guide and there will be plenty of time allotted for everyone to take pictures, get in the water, and reflect. There will be two museums open for you to visit and items for sale. Entry was fast and the bus drive towards the site was short. Bring water, wear a hat, and be respectful of the site and others in your group. Spend time talking with your guide, you may be surprised as to the depth of information/knowledge they have on the site.

This is the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus Christ. It is located adjacent to the Jordan River, and is very close to Palestine. You enter the premises by passing through security, and then park your car. You head to the visitors center to register your information and buy your tickets. Expect to wait for 30 minutes maximum before you are guided to the bus that will take you to the location. You will be in a group, and will have a guide. The bus ride is a short 5 minutes drive, and then you get down in a place that has a souvenir shop, a small kiosk for snacks and drinks, a museum, and the path towards the baptism location. The tour starts with the souvenir shop before you head to the baptism site. After the baptism site, you go to the Church, and then the Jordan River where you can experience the holy water. Due to the proximity with Palestine, security is high. However, you can still enjoy. The tour ends by visiting a very small museum that also has a souvenir shop in it. And while the premises has many churches, the tour doesn’t include visiting them. Allocate 2 full hours for this place as this is the time you will spend from the time you enter the premises until you are dropped back at the Visitors Center. Car parking is for free. You can buy your entrance tickets by cash or card. Even the souvenir shops accept card payment. The kiosk accepts cash only. Generally speaking, the place is very clean and well-maintained, and is very peaceful and serene.

If you visit Jordan, you must visit this site. Although whether or not Jesus was actually baptized in the area is up for debate, and the state of the river itself isn't pleasant nor inspiring, there is still spectacle. Many clearly believe this is the actual site, including many early churches. The site does a good job of presenting its historical evidence as such. Either way, this certainly is a place where Jesus could have been baptized which is an insight in it of itself. The tours, centers, and sites are well thought out and well maintained. The paths are shaded and cooled with mist in the hot seasons. There are plenty of bathrooms. Highly recommend visiting at least once in your life.

Great history on this controversial site. What convinced me to visit and to partake in dipping myself into the Jordan River was the fact that the site was visited by many famous dignitaries including Putin. I think that says it all.

The Baptism Site, Jordan The Baptism Site in Jordan, also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan, is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those interested in biblical heritage. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is believed to be the exact location where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, making it one of the holiest places for Christians worldwide. The experience is well-organized, starting from the reception area, where a comfortable shuttle bus service takes visitors to the main site. The ride is smooth, and along the way, a knowledgeable guide provides detailed explanations about the site’s historical and religious significance, adding depth to the visit. Since the area is quite exposed, it gets extremely hot, so carrying water, sunscreen, and a hat is highly recommended. There are small shops along the way selling souvenirs, but they tend to be on the expensive side. If you’re looking for similar items at a lower price, you can find them in Amman’s downtown markets. Overall, the Baptism Site is a deeply spiritual and historical destination, offering a profound experience for both religious visitors and history lovers. Whether you’re a believer or simply curious to learn more about biblical history, this site is well worth a visit.
