This was pegged as a must visit for coffee lovers while in Berlin, so I made sure to make the time. We went to a bakery in the area (which was amazing) and headed over here.
The Barn, unfortunately, was a disappointment, full stop.
The staff while kind and friendly, were largely of no use. Aside from one very helpful barista, the other two who traded time at the cash register offered empty, sad shoulder shrugs whenever we asked about something, and usually went back to what sounded like "the party line" in prepared info about the coffee (which btw was wrong since there was a mix up and I was given the wrong roast, lucky the barista cleared things up - but too late since I had ordered a second cup by then) or in-house rules.
The novelty of this place seems to be that they are roasting in the back (within view) while in the coffee shop. This isn't exactly new for me, it's a very North American trend, but I thought it a nice touch. Unfortunately, it was just for show. Their coffee was by far the worst I'd had in Europe. They had a number of different roasts - even one named after Muhammad Ali (Ali, while nicely named after the farmer of the roast, it seems, is clearly used here as a marketing tool to cash in on the legacy The Greatest, I assume, knowing the cultural significance of the name). After trying 2 different roasts, we were so unsatisfied that we couldn't even finish.
We'd asked for milk or cream to help balance the overly burnt and bhah taste and make it drinkable but were told they did not give milk because it would ruin the taste of their coffee (too late lol).
All in all, this place is nothing special in terms of set up, its exclusionary approach and stuffiness is not one that makes you want to stay and the coffee is subpar.
Not worth the stop, despite all those singing its praises.
