The Best Affordable Hotels in Tokyo

"Neighborhood: Taito CityPrice: From $125 per night This family-run boutique hotel stuffed full of high-end perks, but with a budget price tag, leads the competition in a few ways. While the rooms are small—they make the most of it, offering ways to save on the limited space (like higher bed frames so suitcases can fit underneath). Also, TVs come with complimentary Netflix and YouTube access, which is an offering few luxury hotels have in Japan. In the common areas, you're met with upbeat staff with restaurant and excursion recommendations." - Paris Wilson

The Barn Tokyo

"Why book? A family-run boutique hotel stuffed full of higher-end perks, but with budget price tags. Set the scene The keyword is efficiency, with a tiny garden for lounging and a whisper of a lobby space with a tiny admin desk and a dining table for guests. Smiley staff are far more proficient in English than some of the front desk staff at pricier digs, and they’re happy to help with restaurant recommendations and bookings. The backstory The Barn Tokyo has a sister property, The Hideout Tokyo, which opened two years earlier down the street, and offers similar accommodation. Rooms While the rooms are small—which comes as no surprise in Tokyo’s budget category—they edge out the competition in a few ways. There’s enough room under the beds to hide unzipped suitcases, and TVs come with complimentary Netflix and YouTube access, which is—perhaps surprisingly—an offering that few luxury hotels have in Japan. Neighborhood Steps from Ueno, this is a great base to explore the northeast section of town, from the stores selling ceramics and restaurant wares along Kappabashi-dori, to the temples of Asakusa, and even Skytree." - Brandon Presser

This is our new favorite Tokyo hotel. We were greeted with a complimentary beverage upon check in with excellent service. We stayed in a Double Room (American full sized bed), room 304. This is a small but perfect room. The room includes a TV with free use of Netflix, a beverage station with kettle, a mini fridge, and comfortable full sized bed. The bed has plenty of space to store your luggage underneath and storage cubes for you to store your clothing. The room has two chairs, an ottoman, a folding table, and two side tables. A sink sits inside the main bedroom and a separate bathroom houses the shower and bidet toilet. The hotel offers complimentary coffee, bananas, and breakfast breads in the morning. The hotel has a small garden, and is convenient to multiple shops, restaurants, and is 3 minutes walking distance to a stop on the Yamanote Line. It’s perfectly located, perfectly priced, offers everything you could need with comfort, style, and excellent service. We can’t wait to come back to stay here again.

Such a great stay at The Barn Tokyo! In the beginning I was a bit doubtful about this boutique hotel as it has mixed reviews. But dare I say, this was one of the comfortable stays we had during our entire Japan trip. They have bigger room size than the average hotels in downtown Tokyo, amenities was great with extra things that are offered to you in the Lobby and of course the hospitality from the staff are excellent (thanks EF!). They received our luggage and placed it into our rooms directly as we head into check-in. And it is also only 3 minutes walk into the nearest JR train station. Love this proximity! Despite the good stuff, what is the hassle? That you must switch your shoes into slippers before entering the premise and keeping the noise level down. And room soundproofing is really light, you may hear other people footstep and especially when you're on the 1st floor - you could hear everything. Please note that they prefer not to have kids below 12 yo to stay, this is to keep the noise level at minimum.

Nestled in a quiet neighborhood. Rooms were very confortable and clean! Employees are so kind, light breakfast available in the morning free of charge and the hotel is a 5 minute walk from the closest train/metro station! A wonderful gem of a hotel and will definitely come back on my next trip to Tokyo!

This hotel was perfect for us on our 4 night stay. Very short walk to train and Ueno Park. Very clean and modern looking hotel. By Tokyo standards, our room was huge! Service was excellent. Everyone always had a smile and our laundry service was done sooner than expected. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Tokyo!

While it’s a good and clean place to stay with fantastic service, with the staff assisting us with our luggage and cleaning our rooms. However, we think that this place lacks privacy due to the thin walls and lots of restrictions, like taking off your shoes before entering the premises, speaking softly, and the rooms aren’t sound proof at all. We could hear foot steps and people chattering from the inside of the room. There’s no sunlight in the toilet, but just a tiny window in the room. Also with the price given, better shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand wash should be provided. For people who want privacy, this hotel is not for you.

We learnt about The Barn in various glossy travel websites and magazines. But overall it didn’t live up to the hype. We found the breakfast of instant coffee and packet snacks to be lacking, compared to the excellent quality breakfasts at other hotels. Needing to remove shoes to enter the hotel was annoying. The walls are paper thin, so we could hear conversations in the room next door, as well as every food step in the corridor. That all rooms are non refundable, and often booked out, meant we couldn’t change our booking when we extended our stay in Tokyo. We actually found a hotel nearby with more modern rooms, an excellent breakfast buffet, and an onsen, for slightly more money, which made The Barn feel less enticing in comparison. The Barn is still a good value accommodation option, slightly away from the typical tourist stops in Ueno, Ginza, etc. It’s not far from the Yamamoto line and the subway so easy to get around. Not bad but not brilliant either.

Amazing and friendly staff. Awesome hotel, staff speaks English very well. Rooms are great, they provide an assortment of bakery snacks and bananas every morning as well as coffee. Rooms are good size, bed is good size as well, american queen size. Very close by to the station. Lots of things within walking distance

Had a fantastic stay at The Barn Tokyo. The staff were very friendly and pleasant. They were flexible with late checkin time due to our flight times and held the baggage on our last day before travelling. The rooms are very spacious for city standards. The hotel is clean and modern. The location is very convenient for train transport , albeit not in the usual tourist spots , I loved the neighbourhood the hotel was located in! Quiet location and comfy beds. Would highly recommend staying here when visiting Tokyo
