The Barong Restaurant Indonesia

The Barong Indonesia Restaurant claims to be a culinary adventure, and it’s not wrong! Our party of four chose the Rusttafel supreme banquet so we could try the variety of dishes, and we were truly delighted. What a taste sensation!
It’s hard to recommend any one dish, as they were all delicious. 
Two of our party required gluten-free food, and they were more than happy to accommodate, substituting some dishes. Great atmosphere, an eclectic range of gorgeous Indonesian items in the decor and exceptional service. Highly recommend visiting here. Prices are great too.

We were so happy to find an Indonesian restaurant in Napier, and it didn't disappoint. We had the Rijsttafel (an Indonesian elaborate meal consists of many side dishes served in small portions, accompanied by rice). Everything was very good, especially the beef rendang , lamb semur, gado-gado and corn fritter. The service was excellent. They even gave us free krupuk (cracker) and pandan drink.

Discovering the culinary wonders of Indonesian cuisine took on a new dimension at 'Restaurant Indonesia' in Napier, nestled by the beach. Opting for the main course was an adventure in itself, with a tantalizing array of 14 different dish samples served alongside aromatic rice. For someone unfamiliar with Indonesian flavors, it was a captivating journey through a diverse and delicious palette. The staff at 'Restaurant Indonesia' in Napier exemplified hospitality at its finest. Their warmth and friendliness enhanced the overall experience, making it not just a meal but a memorable encounter. Service was prompt, with each dish arriving fresh and bursting with authentic flavors. To cap off the experience, I indulged in a coconut dessert that was nothing short of amazing. It was perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and exceptionally fresh. This delightful treat was a fitting conclusion to an already exceptional meal. Against the backdrop of the beach, 'Restaurant Indonesia' offers a unique and delightful blend of exquisite cuisine and coastal ambiance. From the first bite to the last, the culinary voyage at this gem in Napier was truly unforgettable. I eagerly anticipate my next visit to explore more of the culinary treasures that 'Restaurant Indonesia' has to offer.

A lovely restaurant that takes one to the heart of Indonesian cuisine. The hostess was so polite and welcoming and advised rightly to try Rijsttafel. The spinach soup was really appetising and the beef rendang, lamb semur and chicken satay were all beautifully cooked and full of flavour and taste. Collection of mild to hot sauces will satisfy any taste too. Really glad that I tried this place and will be back many times.

Absolutely phenomenal restaurant. We loved the decor, service was stellar, and the food was so authentic and so delicious!!! What a find in Napier. We had a lovely time! We recommend ordering their Rijsttafel, as the sampler gives you a broad range of their dishes and is the perfect amount of food.

The Indonesian decor at this restaurant was very authentic. The beef rendang and the jackfruit rendang were simply splendid. The vegan mee goreng was cooked very well and brought back the flavours of Indonesia. The staff were very welcoming and genuine.

Great food, quality customer service and affordability all in one. We never regretted coming to this place after our travel from Wellington to Napier. Indeed, our quick stay was pleasant and awesome. Amazing ambience. You’ll learn Indonesian culture and other countries. You feel good about the treatment of the owner. She was on top of everything! Highly recommended when you are in Napier. 👍

The Dutch - Indonesian Rijsttafel is a bit of an icon in the Netherlands. Imagine my surprise when I found one right in Napier! The rijsttafel can be considered a bit of a tasting menu or showcase of what is on offer in the restaurant, and The Barong certainly has a lot on offer! As we were four, we ordered the four different types of rijsttafel available, which got us a beautiful spread of dishes with flavours from all over the Indonesian archipelago. The layering and complexity of flavours was absolutely amazing - something you'd be very hard pressed to find in the Netherlands. Leave some space for the home made spekkoek, see picture :) A special mention to the lovely, friendly and helpful proprietors of the restaurant. They were genuinely proud of their place, their heritage and their food - and rightfully so, what a gem! Thank you - Terima Kasih
