A few of us from the office had the chance to walk over to the Bearded Axe after work last night to give the ol' axe-throwing a whirl...wasn't sure what to expect--well, okay, I honestly was expecting to see a bunch of bearded, Duck Dynasty-loving rednecks, or maybe para-military types, but we got there early enough so it wasn't quite that busy. We actually were set up next to a young couple--he was dark and intense and VERY focused on hitting the target and she was lovely and blonde with a mile-wide smile, intent on having fun. So far so good--not so intimidating.
Right out the gate, the staff is great--welcoming and wonderful with drink recommendations (thanks for encouraging me to try the Original Mead--delicious and light!). Once we were situated with drinks, John Peters took us to our "lanes" and proceeded to give a very thorough and easily understood walk-through of the art of axe-throwing. While one would think sheer brute strength would be enough, it seems there is actually an art to it (and luckily my lack of upper body strength was not a hindrance). John's job as coach was to give us one-on-one instruction (and lots of encouragement!) until we at least got one, good "stick". Once we demonstrated our ability to not hurt ourselves (or each other) and were versed in the proper etiquette, he let us loose--and boy, was it fun!
Special thanks to Assistant Manager, John Hammond, for setting our group up--and to John Peters, the best throwing coach we could have asked for!
