20 Best Things to Do in Belize

"A 29-acre conservation-focused zoo that houses more than 150 native animals—many rehabilitated or rescued—including tapirs, jaguars, spider monkeys, toucans, and macaws; the facility offers accessible grounds and VIP guided tours for up-close education about local wildlife." - Patricia Doherty Patricia Doherty Patricia Doherty is a writer who specializes in covering destinations, resorts, and cruises for Travel + Leisure and other publications. "See the exotic animals you hear at night This zoo in incredible for a few reasons: obviously, primarily for the animals there. Being in Belize , there are jaguars, ocelots, scarlet macaws... everything you wish you could stumble upon when hiking in the rainforest (if only hiking boots were less noisy!). Most noteworthy perhaps are the scarlet macaws, which are endangered. If you like to research places before visiting, you MUST read, The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw by Bruce Barcott: it tells about the Scarlet Macaw, Belize itself, and Sharon Matola- the woman who started the zoo and fought to save the macaws a while ago. If you're lucky, you might even be able to hold a boa constrictor (I did!) or meet Matola, who my friends ran into while touring the zoo. By Sarah Kollmorgen"

The overnight stay at the TEC was an experience but so glad we did it with our two daughters. They loved learning and seeing all the animals around. The most amazing part of the whole experience was the night tour of the zoo for the nocturnal animals. That was beyond all expectations and amazing to see the animals thriving instead of sleeping during the day. We got to even feed a few of them as well. Even though it was past our girls bedtimes, it was so worth it to see how much they loved the experience. 10/10 would do it again.

My family, friends, and I went on a VIP tour of the zoo for my birthday, November 2025. Jose was the most amazing guide/expert. We learned so much, got up close with a few of the animals, and really got a good feel for the type of conservation work going on here. This is by far a place that truly loves the animals, and I can't wait to visit again. I encourage everyone to book the VIP tour; it is well worth the money. The zoo also accepts donations, and it is money well spent.

Our 1st night lodging in Belize was at TEC and it was the perfect intro to Belize. We did the night tour where we saw a jaguar, ocelots, tapir and a number of other native animals up close as the zoo keeper enticed the animals right to the fence line with food. We also returned to the zoo the next morning to see it in the daytime. We only had an hour but we could have easily stayed longer. I have mixed feelings about zoos but this one has a strong educational component with large enclosures and natural vegetation with only rescues who cannot be released. The lodging was semi rustic but clean and comfortable in beautiful surroundings. TEC also provided transport from the airport, dinner, breakfast the next morning and transport between TEC and the zoo which is just a mile down the road. Everyone was friendly and helpful and it was a great start to our vacation. Plus the zoo is right on the way to the Cayo which was our next stop. Highly recommend a night here!

Super fun experience, especially because we did a guided tour and leopard experience! Would definitely do again. The guide was super knowledgeable and a nice and chill guy. It's great to know that this zoo is one that rehabilitates the animals and only keeps the ones that were injured to the point where they probably would not survive in the wild.

I don't like zoos as a rule but this one was pretty well done. Most enclosures were natural looking and big. No bad smells. We learned a lot about the indigenous animals of Belize. Would recommend. Very far from town center you will need a paid guide on top of price to get in. We paid $125 USD for the guid and $20 each to get in. Go early to beat the cruise crowds which show up around 10:30 am.

Belize Zoo was so much fun, our kids loved it, there were a large variety of animals and they all had interesting stories! Our favorites were the Spider Monkeys, Tapir, Harpy Eagle, and the Jaguar. In addition to that the cafe was wonderful and the stuffed jacks were delicious, we had to go back just for the stuffed jacks!!!

Stopped here on our way from San Ignacio to Caye Caulker. Amazing to see different animals than what we get in our zoo. Sadly we didn't get a chance to walk the whole thing as we ran out of time, but our guides that were transporting us were very knowledgeable on every single species of animals.

This is an incredible zoo. The animals are well taken care of and appear to be very happy. Every single animal has a name! We went with a tour guide but that is not necessary. There are wonderful signs in front of every habitat that explain who the animal is and how they got there. All of the animals are injured or cannot be reintroduced to the wild for other reasons, nothing is captured. They are very environmentally conscious. Rose was my favorite animal!
