On the Grid : The Bernard Shaw

"All encompassing fun times emporium, the Bernard Shaw has become a standard for which many others have tried to emulate. A laid back combination of art space, venue and outdoor area, it’s hard to find a spot so well equipped for any occasion. The icing on the cake is the Big Blue Bus, a double-decker bus that sits out back and dishes out delicious, affordable pizzas to have with your drinks. Top stuff." - It's Okay

Yelp
Hippy place and always packed! You better come a little bit earlier to get a sit other wise you will stand forever This place is always packed! Great drinks, nice simple cocktails and perfect atmosphere for the night out! They have outdoor place with table tennis, beer pong and table pool- also a huge double deck bus serves amazing pizzas! We all are hungry when we are out! Its perfect, you can get your pizza and then go upstairs in the bus to eat it! Its a good one so check it out if you like unusual places!

Yelp
I love this place. Perfectly underwhelming on the exterior, as soon as you enter you begin what feels as an adventure through the different bars/rooms. Young vibe, hipster bar, i will be back. Great service and no tourists

Yelp
This pub is closed and no longer in business. Yelp please update. Been closed since 2020

Yelp
Special Place in Dublin for Young People. With Friends or for a first Date it's a Great Spot. unfortunately the pizza is bad. Also the shisha.

Yelp
Stopped in last night for a pre-gig drink. Seemed empty enough, but it was a Wednesday so expected. No Malibu. What bar doesn't have Malibu? Ok, vodka and ginger then. Absolute, the rankest vodka available. I'd rather drink Tesco value brand, but to each his own I guess. My ginger was a splash of flat ginger ale from a large bottle for the princely sum of 2.50 euros. Really guys? Hubby said the Guinness was good, despite being a bad pull .. I won't say what he compared the head to ... Anyways, next time I'll walk up the road a wee bit further methinks...

Yelp
The Bernard is a great place. Bacsically you have space inside for a drink A terrace outside to play pool dance a bit, and a pizza van outside as well to eat ( and yes, the pizza here are amazing actually) Of course because is great and because there are not so many nice terraces in Dublin, it's generally crowded and is quite hard to find a nice spot (moreover if you are a group of people) But if you dont mind, definitely go!

Yelp
Is this place hipster! YES! ha ha, this is a quirky little place on Richmond Street, it's so deceiving from the outside you would not guess what magic lies behind the doors here... Some rough on the edge seating inside, some booth/table options but it's outback that this place comes into t's own. There is a spacious area out back which has a pool table and also a projector screen which they lay on for sports events... Place is very casual, with old school benches and seats, people sitting up on concete steps and wait for it, there is a big blue bus which dishes out the yummiest pizza in the area. So whilst you beer up, you can keep yourself with some yumtastic food :-)

Yelp
We had breakfast here before our flight. The staff was so lovely and accommodating. We had our huge luggage with and they kept it up front while we ate in the back. The food was also delicious. I had the avocado and feta sandwich and my kids and husband ordered the scrambled eggs on toast. Simple but really fresh and tasty. The wonderful staff gave the kids an ice cream cone before we headed out. Check them out, they are wonderful.

Yelp
Fully and trusted hipster venue. I you see a fence used to park single speed bikes, a wall with an attractive Graffiti and a house founded in 1895 maybe you are in front of The Bernard Shaw. No doubts there, come in, you will enjoy it. Inside two small rooms, the first one is just the bar. They use to have art exhibitions with emergent artist. Downstairs the second room, kind of cocktail bar with some tables to enjoy the drink. A third space is the backyard, with a pizzeria bus, a billiard and more tables to sit. And of course, more graffitis. I would like to recommended the deal pizza and pint that you can get in the bar. The pizzas there are nice. The pint of Guinness with the day, sometimes is good, sometimes average. Go for a night hipster, go for a night to the Bernard Shaw!

Yelp
Tons of character... Great for a pint and pizza... One of Dublin's best!

Yelp
One of my favourite places in Dublin, at least when it's not crowded which can make it really hard to get drinks. The pizzas are delicious and if you are patient you can taste them on a bus yeah that's right a bus !! They somehow managed to fit one on the beer garden it's so cool and it's also where they cook the amazing pizzas so you can imagine the great smells that come from there. What's really cool about the place besides the awesome decor is the big beer garden and they have a BUS !!! Did i mention the bus ???? I mean where else you can you eat your freshly cooked pizza in a bus??? There are a few things i just don't get like the pool table in the middle of the beer garden. It really annoying when the place is packed and there is someone trying to play pool.

Yelp
Well it's got it all really doesn't it. An ever-changing backdrop of some of the best street art you'll see round the world, an ever-evolving programme of events, from graffiti jams to screenings, home brew championships and full on gigs, there is always something new on the menu. On a sunny day this place is guaranteed to be packed to the rafters with people of all persuasions and ages gettin into the best Sunday session in Dublin. It must be the biggest beer garden in Dublin, surely? On a not-so-sunny day, it does suffer a little I think, but the diverse line up of goings-ons seems to combat that. If you haven't been to Coffee-To-Get-Her in the front during the day on a weekday, I would absolutely advise it. They have a separate listing on Yelp so check out the reviews. It's a nice relaxed vibe, excellent Italian coffee (so I'm told!), and really great food.

Yelp
Once a month The Toejam Carboot Sale is held within The Bernard Shaw. Last Saturday the yard was awash with cars and stalls. The Big Blue Bus Pizza's from their Double Decker Pizza Kitchen were as delicious and charmingly dished up as ever. Other distinctive and very characteristic items available for purchase included Gammy Christmas Jumpers, Christmas Trees for sale handpicked from the Noble Farm in the Wicklow mountains as well as an abundance of Xmas Tree decoration kits. Ice Cream Van Djs, Warm Apple Cider and delicious Sweet and Savoury Crepes a plenty available for purchase alongside Bernard Shaw Coffee House coffee, the hilarious yet idiosyncratic Mulled Buckfast, Arabian pipes on the bus, Hooka Pipes positioned within the smoking area and last but not least Dutch hot tubs out the back are all laid out for your abiding enjoyment. This distinctive set-up is very typical of The Bernard Shaw's general cool ambience that I spoke about in my previous review. It's vibrant without being intimidatingly hedonistic, dynamic minus any self-indulgence - and it is because of the way it implements such an otherwise tricky juxtaposition that I love this place so much. Befittingly, the celebrated DJs Nic James and Melodee putting down the electro boogie, b-more and bass into the wee hours, again contrasted the laid-back vibe radiated by the afternoon goings-on. This drinking hole is rapidly growing to claim the status of my favourite haunt in Dublin.

Yelp
The Bernard Shaw is a very divisive pub. You either love, hate or love to hate it. Of course, being the alternative trend setter that I am, I fall into none of these categories. I love the balls of a pub to be so different. And I love the graf art inside and out. And I love cheap pints. But I hate the bitterly pretentious stench that hangs over the place, and the desperate need to be cool so shamelessly on display amongst some of the clientele. But that's the price of trying something new I suppose, not everything's going to work. So there you have it, I'm thoroughly divided in how I feel about the place. Far from my first choice on a night out, I'd still hate to see it go.

Yelp
If you're tired of Crawdaddy, think that Wax has too many emo kids but still want somewhere achingly hip to hang out, why not take yourself along to The Bernard Shaw just off Camden St? The Bernard Shaw was at one stage just another one of the many pubs between Dame St and the canal, but since Bodytonic have become involved with the place, it has become uber-trendy and prone to all sorts of hipster affectations. "What's the trendiest type of music around? Dubstep? Cool, let's start doing that then. A car-boot sale on Sunday so that everyone can buy vintage clothes and kitsch crap of every disctinction? Done." All pretentious nonsense aside, The Bernard Shaw is a good place to go for a night out, or even just a few early evening drinks, what with their pitchers and €3.50 pints. Just don't play your Black Eyed Peas ringtone in there or they'll run you out of the place.
google avatar

Alexandra M.

Yelp
I take back some of my former criticism about this pub. I went back to The Bernard Shaw to see my friend Danny's band play and I had an excellent night. Even before the band started, this girl DJ was playing a really interesting mix of records, some international sounds with African beats and classic oldies. The band Fandango played great reggae/ jazz/ funk music and people were dancing their pants off on the minuscule dance floor. The bar staff were really easy going and gave away free lollies when you purchased a drink. Drinks were on special, 2 for 1 Mojitos!
google avatar

Yelp
The Bernard Shaw has a good selection of craft beers, including brewdog 5am Saint on tap - yay! That and the Big Blue Bus is what keeps me going back here. They take credit card, but not if you are ordering the Pint+Pizza deal for 11 EUR. The Big Blue Bus being a separate entity and all. The decor is great and the loos have improved no end after they renovated them. The outdoor area is a real highlight. One of the best in Dublin. Get here early on nice days to nab a table. I find the service behind the bar quite slow when the place is a little bit busy. I dread to think what it's like on a late Friday or Saturday night when it's really busy. It's baffling really, I'd imagine they'd rake in a lot more money if they had more bar staff. It's fine. But if it wasn't three minutes around the corner from where I live, I doubt it'd be in much at all.

Yelp
Great quirky spot - great authentic Italian coffee shop by day (complete with somewhat leisurely approach to service at lunch time), tardis like pub by night with tiny front bar and enormous hidden beer garden out back. It's normally very chilled (though can be rammed on a Friday), and dog friendly to boot. Plus they throw in Art shows and occasional bands, plus DJs out back. Hipster? Well, yes, but that's cool as it's not your typical Irish pub which can be a refreshing change in Dublin.
google avatar

Meaghan J.

Yelp
Really cool place! It's a bit of a walk from the city center but it's well worth the walk. Certainly more local bar with great food trucks and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my favorite bar in Dublin! Smoky, hipster vibes, cheap beers, graffiti and strange artistic etchings all over the walls, this was my kind of place, and I'm so glad that my friend (a recent transplant from San Francisco) brought me here during one of my nights out in Dublin. If I lived in this city, I'd come here all the time.
google avatar

Gigi L.

Yelp
Passing by, you wouldn't know that this place is huge! Enter the pub, and there are a few tables and a bar. There's a menu on the wall to order eats like pizza (which smells amazing!) They also have a mojito special (although I think they could use a bit of a kick...) Head downstairs and you'll find a couple more spaces with tables and video screens and great tunes! Then make your way outside and discover their 'secret' gem! A double-level bus with a kitchen and seating on the top floor. It's the coolest thing ever! Order a pizza and head upstairs! If the day is warmer, forget the bus and play some pool in their outdoor covered area. This place is begging for a bright warm day! It's awesome! I'll be returning for a pint, a pizza, and possibly some pool...

Yelp
Definitely far from my favorites list in Dublin. The place itself is OK but a bit schizo, with lots of weird dark corners. Staff is friendly enough, but you never get to see much of them. I suppose this is a good place for events - every time I've been here was with a big group from the office - but I wouldn't rush here on my own or with a small group. I heard great things about their pizzas though!

Yelp
This place is a must for anyone visiting Dublin who enjoys dive places . The music is different every night and a good mix of indie , alternative and rock . The crowd is extremely diverse and friendly . This spot has many indoor seating areas and an awesome outside area. And to top off all of this awesomeness, there is a converted two decker bus which houses a pizza shop with upstairs seating. What more can you ask for music , beer , pizza , good company and friendly staff !!!!

Yelp
Having visited for the first time over a Saturday with some friends I was amazed to see just what wonders were hidden behind the very inconspicuous and mundane entrance. There was a market happening when I visited and the atmosphere was buzzing. I definitely recommend!

Yelp
I so loved this place, my husband, daughter and I found this place by chance. We loved it! Their Sunday brunch mussels were beyond delicious! The staff / maybe? Owners amazing! We wanted to visit again but as you know life doesn't always work the way we like but please know they are GREAT in every way! I hope you are there when we visit again! Love your food and your friendly ness! With kisses from California.

Yelp
Depending on the night I can either love or slightly dislike this bar. Definitely can't complain about the awesome drink specials and speciality beers they have on tap. If you have ever been to any bar in Williamsburg in Brooklyn well then you will know exactly the scene when you enter The Bernard Shaw. On the outside this looks like a typical Dublin pub but once you step in side the double doors you enter another realm of eccentricity that did not exist in Dublin 5 years ago. The music wouldn't always be to my taste but it certainly doesn't over power your evening. The pizza bus is what I love most about this bar- you can get a freshly cooked pizza, really good portion and all for under €10. I believe they also have special pizza deals when you buy a beer. One thing I don't like is that the place is that it always feels dirty especially the outside beer garden- a lot of cigarette ash and cigarette buds. But thats kinda part of the charm and why it has a loyal pilgrimage every weekend.

Yelp
This place is RAD, the street art is amazing and every wall and corner has different graffiti. Its full of life, music and hipsters. My favourite part there is the big blue bus at the backyard and if you were lucky you will get a seat on-board. They do backed pizzas and vegan pizza too. Let me tell you its delicious and the service is fast. I went yesterday for the Gea Flea Market at their backyard and it was fun. Some vinyls, vintage clothes, candles, other stuff and Dj. So much fun and amazing venue for taking pictures.

Yelp
On Friday night is full of people and it is very difficult to move but in the afternoon the atmosphere is very cool. The pizza is very nice

Yelp
Went to the flea market today. I love the Bernard Shaw but the market wasn't what I expected . However it won't deter me from going to the pub again. Such a quirky spot filled with character and a nice crows

Yelp
Sometimes magic happens. You pop out for a quiet one. Saddle up at the wooden stool that hosted many an arse and turn to your friend as he is regaling tales of last night and you smile at him, you smile behind him and you turn to your Guinness that is ready for your lips and you smile - life is good. This spot always starts off as a quiet pint for me and each time something fantastic happens that reminds me that anything is possible in this world. The Kings of Concrete happened to be having a launch night that night, lots of amazing art. Down to earth artists chatting away with me as I smiled deep. Then Giselle Scanlon joined me by my stool. She is the author of the Goddess Experience and now resident of London. She summed up all up to me, "Giselle, why do you love Dublin?" (To paraphrase her) "Because sometimes you get nights like this where everything and anything is possible and you are surrounded by so much talent that has yet to be forced out of the country. Because there is no fake bullshit. Because it's real, genuine, not pretentious and that's when Dublin is at it's best." The Bernard Shaw shows me that and reminds me we have a lot to be proud of, just don't let the government batter your soul!

Yelp
I'm usually a huge fan of The Bernard Shaw, but my experience of one barman there the other night has left me with a taste in my mouth more sour than a pint of lemon juice. Having just sat through a 3hour debate with Sinead O'Conner, my friends and I were pretty tired and only looking for one quiet drink before hitting the hay. I still don't quite understand what happened next. This barman clearly had a bad attitude from the start as he demanded to see all of our ID's when we ordered. He checked each one with excessive scrutiny and then proceeded to refuse service to one of my friends on account of his being 20yrs old?! He had absolutely no justification for his refusal and the whole thing was totally bizarre. When we asked him for his reasoning, his reply was similar to that of a spiteful, power-hungry child; "It's just the way it is". Obviously we didn't stick around to give his ego a foot rub, and instead opted for O'Connells up the road. Thankfully here we were greeted with a refreshingly friendly barman and a surprisingly awesome 90s playlist!

Yelp
"20/20 vision just a pair of empty frames..." This pub gets a hard time. You have to start off by saying that. One of my favourite haunts in Dublin, during the Celtic Tiger this become a sort of 'hipster haunt' (apparently) and was frequently berated by pub purists on all sorts of grounds. Had people taken the time to actually GO in, they'd find a spot quite removed from that entirely. Two cocktails for a tenner, nice beats, turned off telly's, a pool table, some great art (ADW, Maser, ESPO come to mind straight away), a bus that sells pizzas and a stack of freebie papers normally by the door? Thumbs up. It closes late but not late enough if you know what I mean, so a good spot to start in. Keep to the cocktails and you'll be fine. No doubt there are a few knobs, but come on! Been up South William Street lately? ;)
google avatar

Steinunn J.

Yelp
The B-Shaw. Awesome place! Fun and free of pretentiousness. The bar has kept the good kids of Dublin entertained for years with diverse assortment of DJs and events. You can come here at any given day, drink, eat take-away food, play pool, chain-smoke while playing pool, act like a fool and jump like a fool to danceable tunes. No one will judge. Basically, you can come here any day just have a good time. The place does smell of spilled beer on Sundays, but that's the only downer. Previous reviews have mentioned the Carboot sale, taking place in the port one Saturday per month. Lately, the Carboot sale has turned into more of an afternoon drinking session. Well, it's not new. People always came here for the pints, but it's even harder to shop now with the big blue pizza-bus taking up lots of the space outside. But the pizzas are delicious, and the market is always great craic, even though you spend most of your cash on drinks and snacks instead of hunting for second-hand bargains. Great bar with a chilled-out atmo. Love it!

Yelp
As far as pubs go in Dublin, this is hands down my favourite. Far from the typical Irish pub experience, this place is truly one of a kind. It feels like the type of place that in any other city in the world would be overrun and packed to the brim with hipsters who'd have appropriated the place as their own. At the Bernard Shaw however, it manages to capture the exact vibe - a funky interior decor, eclectic & artsy and yet somehow not being pretentious at the same time. The place is always busy regardless of when you go here, but somehow never too busy and you always get served pretty fast. Their selection of beers is solid and there are cocktails on offer as well and there is often a 2-4-1 deal going on with 2 cocktails for 10 Euro - bargain! The magic of this place though happens as soon as you step out the back. It is the one place in Dublin where no matter the season, out the back in the yard is where you need to be. The communal seating out the back is great, it's always heated and despite the smokers if you're a non-smoker like me you don't feel the smoke at all and can still relax. With the same street art type layout as you get indoors, this is the type of place you could really just sit and chill with your friends for hours on end, play some pool or just chat with some randoms in your surrounds. Now if you're hungry, then comes the icing on the cake: order your pizza off the counter on the big blue bus. Yes, you read that right. The big blue bus, a double decker turned hang out spot where you order and have your pizza prepared (and with pizzas starting from 7 Euro, the prices are a real win too), and you can head upstairs, sit on the bus, drink your pint and eat your pizza in relative cosy isolation as you look out at the buzz in the courtyard below. The bus too is decorated in a sort of vintage style with dimmed lamps, cushions and the likes, it's a great spot to eat, drink and chat with mates. Off the main tourist trail and yet still close to the centre of town this place is always a favourite. Great for an afternoon chillout or an evening out with friends alike. And with brunches in the morning and of late Saturday afternoon yoga sessions out the back you can't really go wrong here. That's why I keep coming back!

Yelp
Love, love, love The Bernard Shaw. Great beer garden, great crowd of patrons and good tunes. The pizza that is made in the blue bus is simply divine, highly recommend this place for good craic!

Yelp
My previous review of this place is about two and a half years old and I am sure the pizza from that big blue bus is still pretty good however I went here for breakfast one morning and here is what I learned; The waitress was lovely and very nice, she presented the special (after checking with the chef), and my dad ordered it, she came back a few minutes later and said they were not making it anymore for the day, my sister ordered a croissant, she got cake instead because they were out, I ordered poached egg with avocado and got it with aubergine, they didn't even inform me that I would not be getting the avocado they just served it (I don't like aubergine). You see where I am getting at right? Out of three people none of us got what we ordered and it was very expensive for a bit of breakfast. I guess going here before 6 pm is a very bad idea.
google avatar

Alexandra A.

Yelp
It's a l good place to meet the friends in camden st. It is very hypster place but it is good. The exception were: i) the change our booking's place from outside to inside and didn't tell us. ii) some cheaty staff ( two guys - tall & blonde guy and grey curly hair guy )grabed us the contactless bank card, made the payment and didn't told us what was the value. Btw this is no ethic and probably illegal.
google avatar

Yelp
The Bernard Shaw is probably the closest pub to where I live, so I have been there a few times now. Normally for just one more at the end of the night. Its the sort of place I normally love, quirky and fun. But for some reason I never really get a feeling that I would go there for a night out. Maybe I'm too old now at 40, but I normally like student / indie bars. But there is something about the Bernard Shaw that just doesn't click with me. There are bars I would much rather go to of a similar vein to be honest. The wine (they have red or white) is apparently horrible though so avoid it if you can. However its not that bad and if you are in your 20's I reckon you would probably like it more than me.
google avatar

Bridget R.

Yelp
After a sunny post-work session I made my first trip to The Big Blue Bus. And guys, it won't be my last. At the back of this winding, noisy and very crowded student pub an old double-decker bus has been converted into the most unlikely (yet, well suited) pizza kitchen. The options all sounded delish, but I went for a "Get The Goat", a black olive, feta, goat's cheese and red pepper concoction that was late-night perfection. I skipped the seating on the top deck of the bus (not in the mood to join the press-up competitions or get pinged by winging ice cubes), instead snagging a nearby picnic table to enjoy the crispy crust, delicious toppings and... is that rosemary in the sauce? Fabulous! Overall, the experience was a throwback to my good and grubby times as a student, with drinks specials like 2 Mojitos for 10 euro, heavy drum n' bass vibrating my organs and a packed house of exuberant student types. Looks like I'll be finding more reasons to meet at the Bernard Shaw when it's Pint Time!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Leaving aside all the Bodytionic events, for the minute, this review is just about The Shaw as a boozer. Where to start....well, the selection of drinks is quite good for a small enough bar and they even had Buckfast, which was a delightful throwback to Mrs BM who's from Galway (not so delightful the next morning). Personally, I can't stand the stuff but that's neither here nor there. They do some pretty good deals like the 3 beers for a tenner etc etc. The Big Blue Bus is a winner! What an addition to the place. Tasty pizza for a few shekels and the pizza+pint deal before 9 is worth investing in...especially when you've come straight from work. Never had a bad experience here and it's just got a few extras that elevate it above many a Dubalin pub.

Yelp
I'm lucky to have this little gem around the corner from my humble abode. With a great selection of beers, atmosphere and that spectacular big bus outside - it's become a superb local. The big bus makes a great pizza and houses an almighty seating area - have spent many a New Years Eve on that bus so it brings a lot of memories with it! The music is banging, the customers are laid back and around Christmas you'll be sure to see you're favourite Christmas movie classic be projected onto the blinds whilst having a quiet one on a Wednesday. During the day, The Bernie Shaw makes a mean coffee, probably the best on South Richmond / Camden street so do pop in if you can. I'm a bit bias as it is my local but the place continues to evolve between the graffiti, gigs and events that take place there. I give it an A1 Sharon!

Yelp
Stumbled upon Bernard on New Year's Eve for what we intended to be one drink, but stayed for the countdown! Yes, it's packed to the gills with hipsters. My friends and I could not believe some of the fabrics people were putting on their bodies. Atmosphere was hopping and the place was jammerino with different music on every floor. Make sure not to miss the mini dance room to the left before you get to the toilets; a separate DJ was hanging in there and the atmosphere was so steamy we could see the dewdrops trickle down the walls. The crowd was welcoming and all in all great craic. They served me a bad mini-bottle of wine and when I went to the bar to complain, the barman unsympathetically but unquestioningly exchanged it for a Staropramen. The multiple drinks deals they have advertised look great but we didn't take advantage, stuff like 3 tequilas or 3 ciders or 2 cocktails for a tenner. Then there's the smoking area out back, a huge partly-covered yard with pool tables and the big blue pizza bus that I've always seen at festivals and street fairs. I never knew that thing had a permanent home! What a great idea to cater to the buzzed without having to leave the comfort of the pub. I've also heard they serve Buckfast by the glass, just in case anyone's longing for a low-commitment taste of the student experience. But the best bit by far was the piece of art hanging behind the bar, in Keep Calm and Carry On style, saying Keep Going Sure it's Grand.

Yelp
Kind of hippy, often full but soooooo cool! The garden is great, you can litterally stay here all night. It is quite difficult to access the bus and eat a pizza inside. But you can just have it on the terrace. One of my top 10 garden beer in Dublin!

Yelp
I'm reviewing the Bernard Shaw as a lunch venue only, as I don't frequent it later in the day. It's a bit of a surprise really. It has the Irish pub look from the outside, with the name of one of Ireland's literary giants over the door. But inside, the lunch is 100% Italian. And it's very, very nice. They have regular panini and salad dishes on the menu and specials which the staff are happy to explain to you. The restaurant (well, bar restaurant) is old fashioned. Nothing fancy. On warmer days, you could sit in their open air area at the back. Out there, they have a few benches and lots of arty (and intentional) graffiti. The lunch time staff are friendly and outgoing, as the best Italian restaurant staff tend to be. While they may not always have the menu item you are looking for, their friendly and honest attitude more than compensates. The only downside is that they don't accept credit cards. Though there is a bank machine a little down the street on the other side. For good and tasty food with friendly staff, I highly recommend the Bernard Shaw for lunch.

Yelp
Great spot to grab a drink and hang out with friends. The inside is fairly small and the dance floor is even smaller. DJ's on Thursday night are great and play a great mix of music (top 40, hip-hop, alternative, oldies). The best part about the bar is their patio. The area is massive and can fit approximately 75 - 100 people. There is a pool table and benches for people to sit on. A great big blue bus also sits in the patio that sells food and sisha for people who want a more relaxed vibe. Yes, you can absolutely smoke your sisha in the bus. I tried it once, unfortunately it wasn't great. The hookah seemed to be in need of repair and the sisha wasn't very flavourful. The other downside to the Shaw are the prices. Beers seem to be more expensive than most Dublin bars. I didn't purchase any cocktails so not sure how they compare. Overall though, the crowd is great, the music is bumpin' and the outdoor area is fantastic for those warm nights. Recommended!

Yelp
Don your skinny jeans and get ready for a fist pumping... no, no not the gay kind... the cool hipster dance kind... Cheap drink, great music, good crowd and a pizza bus... yes a pizza bus what can go wrong

Yelp
When it's good it's good but when it's bad it is horrid. I've had many a night in this place, often not through choice but letting other people make decisions for me. Come on a Sunday to the long running 12 Sundays when a good DJ is playing, there is a decent sized crowd and it is a really great place to be. Come any other time and it is either empty or full of hipsters. Maybe the hipsters are always there but when I'm enjoying the tunes enough I manage to overlook it... Some of the ideas the Bodytonic lads have come up with for this place have been great- The Big Blue Bus, bringing over of the likes of Theo Parrish for Easter Bank Holiday weekends, interesting art exhibitions and decent beers on tap but overall I just have never really warmed to the place. Staff are generally absolute soundos though.

Yelp
If the Bernard Shaw was back in Chicago or Champaign-Urbana it would be absolutely crawling with hipsters. It's an establishment my brazilian flatmate would refer to as "alternative" and I can't say that's not an accurate descriptor. That said, I was there for my first time on last Friday and the bar did not disappoint, alt crowd and all. We spent a little time in the bar area inside, until you walk back into the bar a bit the place looks TINY. When I first stopped in to meet up with a friend I wasn't sure if I was in the right place at all. There are three different bars (at least) so there wasn't much of a wait to get a drink anywhere, even on a Friday night. The outdoor area was my favorite, they have picnic table, high top tables, heaters; the area is covered so we had a good time out there even though it was raining (as it often does...). The bar by the entrance looks a little more "pubby", where as the bar downstairs has a little more of a clubby vibe. There are a few tables in a room by the bathroom which was a little quieter and better suited for conversation. Drinks were pretty standard Dublin prices. I'll definitely try to make it back before I leave Dublin to have a bite on the bus, play a little pool, or see a movie projected outdoors (hopefully the latter, bonus points if it's a christmas movie). See ya soon Bernie xx

Yelp
This a young, hipster bar. I have a soft spot for the Bernard Shaw as its one of my locals. I try to avoid going there on the weekends as it can get extremely overcrowded and there's a long wait for a drink at times. Can't beat it on a sunny day tho, nice large beer garden and the pizzas are to die for. Pizza and a pint for €10 before 7pm During the day you can bring your dog into the beer garden too.
