For nine dollars, one might expect a lemon sponge cake of some distinction. Instead, what arrived was a paltry sliver — mean in portion and utterly lacking in merit.
The sponge was dense and joyless, bereft of the light, airy texture one associates with competent baking. Worse still, it carried an unmistakable and rather unpleasant eggy odour. As for the lemon, it was conspicuously absent; there was scarcely a hint of citrus to justify its name.
The presentation was uninspired, the flavour forgettable, and the price wholly unjustifiable. For far better quality and value, Ivy’s cakes and muffins are infinitely superior. This, regrettably, was nine dollars squandered.
