The Big Apple – Colborne, Ontario - Gastro Obscura

"As you drive east on highway 401 out of Toronto, you can’t help but notice a giant apple with a cheery face on the side of the road. Not to be confused with a certain city, the Big Apple is a rest stop in Colborne that wouldn’t be out of place among the towering Big Things dotting Australia. While the site features activities such as a petting zoo and mini golf, the real focus is an array of apple-based treats. The Big Apple is a bakery and market that is packed with any and all products involving apples. You can watch the pies and cakes get made through the bakery windows. There are also more adventurous options such as “pie in a cake” and “tart in a muffin.” For a sweet Canadian specialty, look for the apple-topped Beaver Tails, slabs of fried dough coated in cinnamon and sugar. Savory meals are also on the menu, including smoked apple hot dogs on freshly baked apple buns and grilled cheese on apple bread. Just about everything pairs well with the fresh apple cider, pressed on site. The Big Apple itself has an observation deck, where you can marvel at the Canadian highway and the traffic east and west across Ontario. It’s not the most spectacular view at 35 feet high, but the draw is that you’re standing on a giant smiling apple. The whole site has a country chic decor that extends to the restroom. The stalls are designed to look like outhouses, complete with a floor covered in grass-like tiles. The Big Apple Factory is a must-stop spot if you’re ever on a road trip to or from Montreal. I visited during a recent trip, and it was definitely one of the highlights along the way. The atmosphere was lively, with lots of people enjoying the space, but it still felt organized and welcoming. The best part by far was the apple pie — hands down the best I’ve ever had. Fresh, warm, and full of flavor, you could taste the quality in every bite. What made the experience even more interesting was the open kitchen concept. You can actually see the pies being made right in front of you, which adds a fun and authentic touch. There’s even a live display showing how many apple pies have been sold that day — it’s impressive and gives you a sense of how popular the place is. Outside, there’s a giant red apple structure that makes for a great photo-op, especially for kids. The whole place is family-friendly and a great break spot on a long drive. Whether you’re going for the apple pie or just looking for a unique stop, The Big Apple Factory is definitely worth a visit.

This place is a worthwhile pit stop for long travels but I do not recommend it as a travel destination (if that makes sense). The place has got every necessary thing a pit stop station would have but make it all apple. There is also a small restaurant located at the back of the grocery area with outdoor seats. The shop stands outside were closed when we visited on a weekday afternoon, however. 🥐🥪 pastries were freshly made and were enjoyable but some may find it a little too sweet. ___________ Upon exiting the store through the back door, you will see the Big Apple to your left, and next to it are some apple trees. To the left, there is a mini-putt activity for free and a ramp to exit the building. ___________ You can enter the apple through the side entrance. There are a total of 3 flights of stairs to access the very top part of the apple. It is spacious, dusty and ventilated by 2 electric fans on the second floor. There are also a few benches on the second floor. Overall, it is such a beautiful place to stop by and keep the morale of a long trip.

Google
The apple caramel pie is really delicious. I also bought donuts, a parmesan crusted chicken wrap and apple cider vinegar(didn’t try yet). Very satisfied of the food quality. You could also do mini putt here. And going to the petting zoo. Very popular!

We have been travelling between Toronto and Montreal since the past eight years, and this was the first time we took a break at this place, partly because it is quite close to Toronto and so too early or too late to take a break, depending upon where you are coming from. This time we took the break deliberately to explore it. There is a mini golf area outside for which the equipment can be avail from the restaurant. The restaurant which is a part of the larger store was fine. We went for a vegetarian sandwich with soup combo and a vegetarian poutine. The sandwich was supposed to be grilled , but it looked like they forgot. It tasted OK. The soup was not good. The protein was good. The souvenir shop was amazing. It had many options in terms of merchandise. For food, there is a seating area inside as well as outside. Plenty of parking available. While the food wasn’t great, I would still recommend checking it out.

Google
We stopped by The Big Apple because a friend recommended it, and we’re so glad we did! It turned out to be a great spot. We ended up spending more time there than we expected. We saw some cute animals, enjoyed some food (which was fine), and had a lot of fun playing mini golf. We also bought some apple-based treats, which were delicious! If you're on a road trip, I highly recommend taking a break here.

Google
We love visiting the Big apple! There is lots of entertainment for the kids. Especially on the weekends when there is a free carousel and train ride. There are lots of different food options to choose from. I highly recommend trying the apple bread grilled cheese. The portions at the restaurant inside are great too. We can never finish and the meals could probably be shared

A must visit stop while driving 401 highway. The place is pet friendly and has a dog park for furry friends. The petting zoo was amazing with very cute animals. Kids would definitely love it. There were many local small business displays with unique collections to purchase. My parents loved shopping. There is a shop for furry friends too which was amazing. The small business owners were very friendly and welcoming. We loved the experience. Lot of apple treats were available which were tasting good. Definitely recommend to visit this place.

Google
First time stopping in after driving past 100s of times. Really big shops inside for candy, ice cream, baked goods, and hot food. The candy is very over priced, about 30% more than you would normally expect to pay. I bought an apple fritter for $3, and it was terrible. Dry, not much icing and maybe 4 sad chunks of apple - very surprised and disappointed. Minu golf is free, and quite fun with a well maintained 'course' Washrooms were very clean. Nice place to stop along the 401 and break up the drive

Yelp
We always enjoy visiting The Big Apple on our way to East and it never fails. The market has so many great options to buy; apple cheesecake, tart, cookies, raspberry/strawberry/Burberry tarts and so many more options. You can also watch their baking area as it's on the premises. They also sell many more goodies that you can enjoy. There's a playground for the kids and ample parking spaces available.
google avatar

Biyu X.

Yelp
This is a great place to come with Kids. They would love it so much. It's on highway, many people drive from Toronto towards East would pass by. The Big Apple, I thought it was a place to have apple picking, but I was wrong. There were stores, farmer markets, putting zoo, petting zoo, and train rides. The really impressive part is customers climbing up to the top of the huge apple. There are 3 floors inside: ground floor has 3 big figures with 2 big pies; 2nd floor has a cabinet of apple collections; 3rd floor is the lookout point. I like the farmer market that we could actually watch how they make the apple pies. We like the NO sugar added apple pie, and the Pesto spread. We definitely will come back.

Yelp
I love The Big Apple! I visit every time I go to my uncle's cottage for bakery and 401 Cider. This time we had lunch and a Beavertail! I had the grilled ham and cheese on apple bread (it was enormous! I had the other half for dinner) and my bf had the Smoked Meat panini (his was more modestly sized). Both sandwiches came with fries (we couldn't eat all of those). We shared the apple pie Beavertail. Everything was so good and made fresh to order. They have a penny press, so try to find a US Penny or a long forgotten Canadian penny if you collect pressed pennies! I'm not sure if the cashiers have any on hand, I luckily had a US penny in the bottom of my purse!

Yelp
Delicious. Poutine topped with pulled pork and bbq sauce. Portion size is huge. Come with an appetite or get it to share.

Yelp
It was a stopover going to Ottawa . It was highly recommended so we bought their famous apple donut. It smells so good inside fresh apple pies . They make inside. It was a fun time to watch them making it from the glass window. Price is moderate. Chocolates are available in different kinds. Also lunch menu like takeout salad and sandwiches are available. It's a good stop and stretch as well.

Yelp
Looking for a popular pitstop along Highway 401 East? The Big Apple is a popular family spot to get homemade bakery products made with apples. There are EV charging stations for people driving their EV's. This complex consists of brewery, bakery, candyside, dog run, food trucks, Maple room, Mini golf, Ping Pong, Train, Petting zoo. What a great place to spend some time with your family and kids. The apple fritters were kind of pricey $12.99 for 6 pieces. I bought one at $2.99 to try it out. The fritter was lacking the sugar icing and apple cinnamon flavour. I was disappointed as the fritter didn't have many apples in it. The apples used were not sweet at all. We bought the 9 inch mumble crumble apple pie $16.99. This pie had lot of sweet apples and crunchy crumble on top. They definitely make these pies with love. So next time you're heading east don't forget to stop by in Colborne, Ontario and grab some delicious pies and pastries.

Yelp
The Big Apple was a great spot to stop on the way from Toronto to Kingston. It is a store that sells food, mini apple products, including fresh apples, baked goods, many souvenirs, wine, and of course, apple cider. They also have lots of clean bathrooms to use. It is also possible to go up the big apple to a viewing deck on top. I purchased some ciders to try out and a loaf of freshly baked apple bread.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow. This place has everything; fresh food, preserves, crafts and so many pies! Amazing local and fresh goods. Even a petting zoo! Lots of parkings
google avatar

Winnie H.

Yelp
It's always my stop to Ottawa. Besides using it as a pit stop ( with lots of stall in the washroom), I enjoy the apply pie a lot. There is other type of food to eat. Alway busy and feeling welcome. There is petting zoo there too. Open almost year round and long hours. Much better than going to service station.

Cindy L.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the big Apple. I only go 4 times a year as it is over 3 hrs from me...bought some caramel apples which are expensive but usually delicious and when I got home went to cut up and two were totally rotton and mushy on the inside...as soon as I picked up from packaging my fingers went right through the apple....not a happy customer to waste money like that.

Angie A.

Yelp
So disappointed I checked a few sites that stated they open at 7:30am. Their entrance door stated they open at 7:30am. We asked to employees outside and they said they open at 8am. And we're from Montreal.
google avatar

Yelp
My sweetie and I are on our Pumpkinfest Weekend Tour! Can't past this place without pulling off the highway on our way home. Bought more treats (again). We picked up 3 apple pies and a bottle of apple cider. On the road again...

Yelp
Check your receipts! They're tipping themselves by charging double HST. Should have brought my glasses since service wasn't worth it.

Yelp
We have crossed big Apple N number of times but never stopped there thinking it's just an apple market. But couple months ago we stopped here with our 2 year old as enroute stop while on our way to Kingston. I must admit I missed it all these years. The store inside has anything and everything made out of apple that you can't even think in your wild imaginations. Oh lord.. it was all a delicacy. The outdoor mini park was not open yet due to weather and covid restrictions. Would stop there everytime when I pass through it in future.

Yelp
We decided to head out east to check this place out. We visited some local towns beforehand. We got here in the afternoon and they were bustling. However the patrons and guests are still being mindful of social distancing. I feel like a big kid when I walked into the building. They got a candy store and the amazing bakery! I love the aroma from the bread and pies being made. We got some pies and dessert home to be enjoyed. We will come back!

Yelp
I finally made it a mission to stop by The Big Apple after a road trip east of Toronto!! I was told by returning patrons that it has changed a lot over the years. It is now organized by groupings of items that are sold by the different shops within the store. There's a treat shoppe which has dessert items that feature no apples at all like fudge, chocolate covered pretzels and Oreos, and an assortment of candy. Connected to the treat shoppe is an area that sells some housewares that are next to their alcohol selection. There was also an espresso bar in this area that appeared to be closed. This area has its own check out. The marketplace has hot foods that you can buy. It features a smokehouse with BBQ goods like ribs and turkey legs. It also offers official Beavertails but does not have the extended menu with hot dogs. This area features fresh baked goods galore with pies, strudels, donuts, and cookies to name a few. My family is a huge fan of strudels so we grabbed a strawberry cheese one (yes, no apples lol) which was very good. There are a ton of deals throughout all of the stores that offer mix and match deals or buy x get one free deals. This is how we wound up with a package of maple filling cookies and ice wine maple cookies. These were also a huge hit. A few notes about the store. There is an accessible entrance alongside the stairs by the main entrance. The whole patio area including the petting zoo was closed during my visit. There is ample parking in the lot. Just watch out for the area that is just reserved for tour buses. If you have fido with you, there is actually a dog run where they can play off leash. We did see a few dogs as we came into the store and left so your pooch can meet a new friend! If you really aren't keen on making the drive out there, you can visit their online shop. They deliver to Toronto and the GTA. Finally, it seems as though they aren't finished making renovations as they will be adding a carousel in the summer. The one hugely disappointing thing is that access to *the* big apple was closed! No real explanation why unfortunately. I really wanted to get a cheesy photo in front of that giant smiling apple but that was not to be on this visit.

Yelp
What's not to love?! It's a big red apple you can't possibly miss when driving along the 401. We've always stopped by to grab a bite or just visit the apple for a photo op. This trip we recently made, we noticed the apple is sporting a large face mask. How wonderful!! We went in to see what goodies we might be interested in and I couldn't help but pick up a box of the apple cider. We love the fresh apple cider here and even though it's a bit pricey compared to other local farms, I figure it's worth it once in a while. I'm not a big fan of the baked goodies just because it's always so sweet. They have a huge section of souvenir style gifts. I do wish they would update that section to host and support local small businesses/ handmade goods/ local goods. Everything in there was made in USA or made in China. We had just come from the Belleville area where most stores were stocked with local goods, so this just seemed a bit less exciting and almost tacky. I was excited to see that they've renovated the "petting" zoo. The animals have plenty of space to decide if they want to be swatted at by misbehaving children or hide in their barn. I think they should really have a staff come by just periodically to make sure everyone's being respectful to the animals. If you're driving by anyway, then I think it's worth taking 15-20 minutes out of your drive to stop by for a bite and take a look around. It's a pretty iconic stop and very family friendly.

June V.

Yelp
Get off the 401 and enjoy some delicious food. There is a fenced in dog run for your pooch. This place will make you smile!
google avatar

Rex K.

Yelp
Everything Apple. From apple pies, to apple bread to candied apples. The store from take home is packed with many delicious items, all a little pricey but worth it for the quality and taste. There's also many items for the home too such as ornaments and pictures. Hot food is available to eat on the premises, which is decent enough, but not something you'd go out of your way for. Outside there's a small zoo where you can feed goats and sheep and other entertainment like mini-golf. Overall it's a neat place to stop by if you're on a road trip and happen to be passing.

Yelp
I'd estimate that for a decade, when travelling to either Ottawa or Montreal, I drive it. I often take highway 401 for the most part heading eastbound. I had never stopped by the Big Apple until my recent road trip to Montreal. With my luck, I did it on a rainy day. It did not dampen my spirits, though! You can't miss a charming, happy, huge apple! I parked practically in front of the entrance and walked in. I liked that the restrooms were farm-themed and extremely clean. My bladder was thankful! This place is massive. Do you want candy, pretzels, and other sugary goodies? You can find them here and then some. Want to see every baked good that you can possibly squeeze apples in, such as apple bagels, tarts, and cookies? Yep, they are all here. I stared at a massive monster apple crumble for a good minute. I wanted it, but I didn't know whether my mini fridge at the hotel would fit it. I had to pass. It's fun here. The huge apple is an observatory. Unfortunately, it had closed by the time I got there, but got details from a staff member. I was still pleased to take photos of the cheerful apple. For kids, there are rides and apparently small animals. I didn't see the latter on this rainy day. There is a gift shop, Gifted Garden, with fun items. I liked the pink flamingo by the entrance. BeaverTails is also outside, but it was closed, likely due to the rain. There's a food area, the Smokehouse, where you can get hot items and BeaverTails. There are various little sections in the store for Kawartha ice cream (the best!), 401 Cider Brewery, and more. I got an iced apple cider for the road. It was $4.50 with tax. My iced apple cider was so refreshing on a hot, muggy day. I loved the apple taste and the cider was not overly sweet. It was perfect and it kept me going till I reached Montreal. The Big Apple handles the flow of customers extremely well. It's one direction to head to the cashiers. I paid using a credit card. You then leave by swinging around in a separate lane. Yes! Unfortunately, a huge coach bus decided to park in front of my rental car. I took me three tries backing out and turning in to get out. I was so happy that I wasn't stuck there forever! I had a fun time here. I'd like to come back, hopefully on a dry day, and get some pies. They looked so good! (306)

Yelp
Nice place to visit. Lots of photo ops... especially with the Big Apple. Plenty of seating outdoors- covered or in the sun along with activities like mini golf of visiting the petting zoo. Food wise, nothing special but lots of options. The pulled pork poutine was pretty good although it took a long wait to get the food. The beef brisket sandwich was mediocre. Nice to grab a bite out of convenience but otherwise wouldn't go out of my way to visit again.

Yelp
I really truly truly wanted to give the big apple a higher rating than a 2/5 star. The big apple is a place I've been since I was a little girl and my memory and experience of it has always been such a joy as they had great apple products. One thing i really enjoyed was the big apple that had a mask. I thought that was a really nice touch and promoted social distancing and wearing a mask, which was super clever! I got the apple sausage hot dog, the apple fries, apple filled doughnut, an apple pie, an apple crumble as well as some apple ciders during my visit at the big apple, and to be frank, i was disappointed. The apple sausage hot dog had little to no apple in it, it tasted like a regular hot dog, which was disappointing as they promoted it as chunks of apple and cheese in the hot dog, therefore we got the product. The apple fries were literally slices of apples just fries up, and when i asked if i could get some cheese on it, they said no even though i said i could pay for it. It tasted like hot apples. The apple filled doughnut tasted kind of like something you would find at Tim hortons, however, i did like it. The filling was sweet and tart, and i liked the cinnamon. I do think it's nothing really special. The pie was disappointing, and even when i baked it, it seemed like something i could have bought at a grocery store like Walmart for 5 bucks. And i bought it for 13.99. The crust was especially dissatisfying. The apple crumble was pretty good after putting it in the oven to heat it up. I really enjoyed it and would definitely get it if i were ever to visit again. I do recommend just getting the smaller one though. The ciders were good, i really liked the pear cider and caramel apple cider from the winery. I believe it's from winery 401. Overall, it was nostalgic but i did drive 2 hours to get there and it was very disappointing as the products were really not special and i could've gotten better at a local supermarket. However, i did like browsing around the store. It is pretty empty and i felt safe covid wise as they did implement guidelines.

Steve K.

Yelp
A real "destination". Nice people and well organized. Awesome apple pies, superb peach pie, great fritters and top notch butter tarts. Their BBQ/smoked meats are excellent. All said, an enjoyable stop with excellent food, well worth the cost.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious apple desserts ranging from turnovers, pies, crisps and muffins to name a few are the star of this family fun activities including the petting zoo or min golf course. There's even 3 ping pong tables. Other desserts include blueberry flavour s or lemon. But just go there go see the selection. Pricey but many are made on site though.
google avatar

Leo D.

Yelp
The place stinks. It literally stinks of human waste. I think the septic tank has over-flowed. Same thing happened on a construction site that I worked on. The General Contractor allowed the septic tank there to over-flow--more than once. First, you smelled it, then you saw it: raw sewage, streaming slowly across the parking lot, past our trailers to where the students parked. Eventually, the "honey-wagon" pumped it out. I think the Big Apple should get their septic system serviced fast, before the MOE is called in.
google avatar

Aimee H.

Yelp
This place is great, but...prices are made for tourists! So if you want to spend money on something, definitely go for the apple breads. I feel that's the best bang for your apple buck! Otherwise, head over to the cider counter and taste test their award winning gold, silver medal ciders before deciding to buy.

Yelp
Definitely a good washroom stop along highway 401, a lot of activities for kids and the whole family. I like the apple pie. We ate 3 slices and bought a whole one to go. We stopped here on our way to Prince Edward County. I passed by this place many times along the 401. It is the 2nd time visiting here. 1st time is with a tourist group. Many tourist groups like to stop here. I highly recommend stopping here along the 401. It has a farm at the back and it is interesting to see donkeys, sheep, lambs, and pigs... Also, it is a good washroom stop. It is super clean and the washroom is nicely decorated. It is a good breakfast as well. The pie is fresh and tasty. I like that pies are not too sweet. The factory is in the building and you could see everything made in front of you. They also sell honey, bread, and cider as well. You could go into the big apple status and climb to the top. Highly recommend to stop here and buy some apple pies. (PS. the apple chips sold here are not made here. Don't buy those.)

Yelp
August 01, 2018 - I went to "The Big Apple" with my family. It was nice to go into The Big Apple and climb the stairs all the way to the top. There you can see a nice view of the area. It was nice to see the animals, they had a llama, donkey, goats, sheeps and a few other animals. It was also nice to see the workers baking pies, bread and tarts. We bought 3 different types of 8" Apple pies.

Yelp
My husband and I made a stop here for some fish and chips. There was a line up, but it was most certainly worth the wait! Crispy, light not greasy. Just perfect. Would most definitely go again and again, if ever we are in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice stopover for young families. We visited the restaurant and ordered the pulled pork poutine and the brisket sandwich. Both were pretty average. There was also plenty of outdoor seating, but social distancing inside the restaurant/store could have been improved. The wait time for the food was quite long and could be more efficient. However, the petting zoo was a nice bonus after lunch.

Yelp
The Big Apple off the 401 has been around for as long as I can remember. I went here with my parents a few months ago - the first time in maybe a decade. A lot has changed! They still sell your standard pies, crumbles, and strudels, plus the store for things like apple chips and other food products and home decor/souvenirs, but they now also have a restaurant and smokehouse, a food truck, and 401 Cider Brewery. The apple pies didn't look so great at the time, probably because they were picked over, so we bought an apple crumble, apple and cheese strudels, apple chips, and a bottle of their limited time True North, a special Canada 150 bubbly that's a blend of hard apple cider and baco noir red wine. Everything they have is affordable and tastes great, and our cashier was very sweet. I do wish their pies had a more homemade feel, but that may just be me comparing what it is now to when I was a kid. It was insanely busy during Canada Day weekend, though I hear it's always crazy - it can be difficult to get through all of the people, and those with mobility issues may find it even harder when it's extra busy during long weekends. Will definitely be back sometime sooner than another 10 years to try out their food.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
The Big Apple is located right off the 401 HWY, and is definitely a good little pit spot for resting. They offer an assortment of apple products, like pie, donuts, strudels, and many other small souvenir like products. They also have a huge candy store located inside the establishment as well. We stopped by and ended up ordering an " apple hot dog on a cheese bun" and it was one of the best hot dog I've ever had.

Yelp
This is my first time going inside The Big Apple pitstop i've always saw it on the highway every time I went out east but never physically went in the place until now. First impressions, I thought it was a cute Little shop with a whole bunch of Apple homemade goods prepare fresh every single day which was great! Literally almost anything you bought there had apples or some other fruit but mostly apples! I ended up buying a mini apple pie and a apple strudel, The apple strudel tasted pretty good! And I ended up buying an apple pie and my parents I'm out by apple bread, apple wine and apple blossoms oh they're all fairly reasonable priced which good! I would assume they would taste good as well! I would definitely come back when I am on my way out east either to or from where ever I'm going again!

Yelp
If you love em Apples this Is your place. Right off highway 401 East its hard to miss the giant Apple with a happy face smiling at you as you pass by. Opened all year round, they've got everything apples, from cakes, cookies, cider and candy to alcohol, pies, souvenirs and candies!! In the summer they've got mini putting golf. We picked up their Apple dry cider which was a delight, easy 4/5. Their Apple bumble crumble pie for 2 was delish! Let's just say it was love at every bite. Overall a great place that I'll be visiting again on my way back home to the GTA.

Yelp
A good place to stretch your legs off highway 401 near Cobourg but way over the top touristy. They have everything Apples and more! There's a full out extensive candy area, frozen yogurt, Cawartha Dairy ice cream, cider brewery with free samples, viewing area to pie factory, train and petty zoo (seasonal), full store and smokehouse selling back ribs. The washrooms were very impressive (see photos). Bought a slice of apple crumble pie and back on the highway feeling good.

Yelp
Perfect stopover spot. Been going here for the last 8 years and it just keeps getting better and better. The food selection is great and there are many options for the whole family ( I have 15 members in mine)!! Kids love the outdoor space in the summer and it's fun to go in the Apple. Washrooms are clean. We make a point of not going here at prime tourist season when the tour buses go but I can imagine how crowded the eating area can be - 4/5 because the prices are going up but again, if the portions remain the same then not a big deal.. Love their poutine selection!!

Yelp
Going here was like a dream. During the Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec tour I was on, we made a rest stop here for munchies and a washroom break. WASHROOM: The Big Apple has a pioneer/farm theme to it and the washrooms' design followed accordingly. Each stall was designed to look like an outhouse, so snap a pic when you're there! The flush, faucets, and hand dryers are all automatic, which I appreciated since I'm a bit of a germaphobe. The washrooms are also well maintained and there are stalls for at least 15 people at once. Overall, The Big Apple's washrooms are a must try during your trip. FOOD: Lemme tell you, the stuff here is dank. I wish I could visit every weekend because I have a sweet tooth for apple cinnamon concoctions. If you're not an apple fan, don't worry 'cause they also have desserts made with berries, pecans and other fruits/veggies. If you're one for savoury food, they have your back as well; you can buy hot foods like poutines, burgers, pizzas, etc. Another excellent touristy detail is that there's an open window concept in which you can view the workers making the different items at the back. There's also a dining area with utensils and napkins, so you can munch on the goodies before hopping back on the road (great if you're the driver!). We bought an apple donut that oozed with sweet apple sauce; a Nutella donut that wowed my bf; an apple heavenly cake that was so moist you wouldn't be able to stop eating; and a blueberry pie that would put the usual store-bought pies to shame. I wanna go back. The food tastes so fresh. Seriously. Next time, I'm going to try the apple pie slices with ice cream on the side (so many apple chunks!), the water buffalo milk, and the hot foods. If you're travelling East of Toronto, I seriously recommend you to visit - with an empty stomach.

Yelp
There is zero chance that you will not see a giant red apple with a bright smiling face in the distance as you travel east on the 401. It's a good place as any ONRoute for a pit stop. You can stretch your legs, use the potty, buy some bbq/burgers/sandwiches, visit the inside of the giant smiling apple, and indulge in all manner of savoury and sweet things with apple inside. It's very popular with tourists but I would stop of calling it a tourist trap. The prices are fair enough. A good slice of pie is $4.29 and that's reasonable to me. We actually ended up stopping on the way back towards Toronto and it offers all of that and more. It's hard to not walk through the farmer's marketplace and not pick up something small, medium, or large with apple in it. The smells waft through the air and entice you to open your wallet. I ended up buying a small 6-inch mumble crumble apple pie for home while buying a slice of the same pie to eat right away. It was time to fuel up for the final stretch home. The slice of pie wasn't kept warm in the self-serve glass food shelves but it was still yummy. The oats and brown sugar crumble on top of the pie was very crunchy and gave it texture with the thick el dente apple slices. You can taste the cinnamon and other spices to bring those tart apples to life. Everyone should come here at least once imo. It's a little kitschy, corny, and delicious.

Yelp
Plenty of activities/things intended for kids to enjoy and overall a nice place to stretch out your legs after a few hours of driving. Very kid friendly with photos ops, petting zoo, mini-putt, etc. As far food goes, it's pretty interesting. Lots of homemade sweets which is pretty cool. They make apple pie by the metric ton and while they LOOK great the slice of Apple pie itself was kind-of disappointing. With 6 million pies served I guess this is the quality control we get. No one offered to warm it up or make it, "a la mode". All missed opportunities and in the end we shared a very mediocre slice of crumbled apple pie that was waaaay to sweet. Mediocre crumbled apple pie should be a crime. Had their pulled pork and fries as well. Was actually pretty decent. Meat was good but barely any sauce? Ok. How does that work? That's like writing a paragraph halfway and then suddenly stoppi-

Yelp
Amazing place! They have great covid precautions by asking everyone to sanitize their hands before entering. They have a huge selection of apple products and their pies are so delish!! Love their mumble crumble and traditional apple pie. Their onion rings at the food counter are also phenomenal and the fish and chips are soooo good!!!

Yelp
To support local business and to break up a cold rainy day we decided to go to The Big Apple to get beavertails. After checking out the store and picking up a few things, we ordered our beavertails (4 of them). We left as soon as we received them from the kitchen. I had just got on the 401 when we realized not only were they stone cold (not even a hint of warmth) but the order was wrong as well. So much for having a warm beavertail. Very disappointed and a complete waste of $32.

Yelp
This is a must go! The best tourist place we can stop on our way back to MTL. The perfect stop to rest, play and eat. Kids and adult will find what they are looking for in a truck/tourist stop. Love the pie - Love the bread

Yelp
It provides a nice drive outside of the city, definitely plan on taking a fall drive here, it is more picturesque than the items I tried were tasty to me. I would get bottles of cider for show though,as the labels on their 401 brewery products are nice. if you like sparkling Apple cider this place is likely for you. I tried their mini donut es which were dry and bland in my opinion, however their other apple goods did look delightful , so in the fall I will be reassessing my opinion on this place and posting a more detailed review. Hopefully it won't feel as hot inside once the weather cools down. Until then I feel this place is more of an Instagram worthy location & family attraction for the little ones(petting zoo). It will definitely be a must for me anytime I'm eastbound.

Yelp
I been stopping at this place before it was famous. I love to stop here whenever I am travelling 401 east going to other cities or provinces. This here is a great and refreshing stop. This time they killed it! before it used to be just pies and bread but now they have extended to more items, a cafe, candy shop, gift shop and the petting zoo is still there. The washrooms are always decent to use here. There apple bread and chips as well as popcorn are quite good. Make sure you stop and take a break at this spot.

Yelp
Drove by along the highway on our way home we decided to stop in. I haven't been here in years. They used to have a small petting zoo but there wasn't any animals in the zoo area today. I wonder if they bring the animals out during the summer months. The little gift shop inside has changed since I've been here last many years ago. Is sweets and candies are what you're after this gift shop is for you. The main store where the pies are made and sold is still as good as I remembered. The prices have gone up quite a bit but so has everything else. We got there late in the day so the pie factory was closed for the day. It's neat to see the assembly line where all the lies are made. The restaurant inside is geared for bbq meat lovers. Ribs, brisket sandwiches, burgers, fries and other tasty bbq goodies can be bought here. We bought two pies. One count cream pie ($16.99) and one Mumble Crumble apple pie ($12.99). Coconut cream pie is my favourite so I had to buy it. I cut a piece immediately when I got home. The pies are well worth the extra price !!

Yelp
Good spot. Every time I think it's overrated I remember that I usually start by nibbling at a pie... by end up eating half of one. The big apple is one of the few interesting spots on a long a boring drive between Toronto and Montreal. It's worth the stop if you want to make someone's day a little better with a pie gift. Who doesn't like a pie gift? Sometimes they even have a petting zoo. Who doesn't like a petting zoo? Haha It isn't life changing. It isn't even amazing amazing pie. But it's definitely good. It's worth the stop FYI they have a lot more than just pie. There are all kinds of sweets, some sandwiches and meals, beverages, etc. I have tried none of it. I come here for the pie.

Yelp
The Big Apple!! Immediately off the highway, Apple pies are freshly baked hot and delicious. Don't forget to Add ice cream to your pie. Plenty of seats available. Nice decor at the washroom entrance. Fun family stop over.

Yelp
I've been going here since I was a kid. When the operation was smaller, I feel like the apple pies were tastier with a better crust, but maybe my palette has just developed over time. At least the filing is still just right with thick apple slices and a ooey-gooey centre. There's a nostalgia about stopping here that keeps me coming back for more. Edit: Picked up an apple crumble pie for Thankgiving and the crumble was delectable. It has restored my affinity for their pies!

Yelp
Do you want to bring out the child in you and have some fun? If yes, visit the Big Apple in Colborne. On your way driving from Toronto to Kingston for the other way, this could be the required stop for you to recharge your batteries. Of course, the apple pies, apple chips etc are what they are known for. I am not a big fan of that but what i love best is to stop by and see the bakery in action through the glass. It gives me immense pleasure as I see stuff being baked / built. There is ample parking space for you and get down and stretch. There is a big apple where you can take some pictures, minigolf where you can play and of course the animals viewing area. Lots to do and enjoy the place!
