We had a fabulous two night stay here, courtesy of a Travelzoo deal that included staying in a deluxe room, breakfast on both mornings, three course dinner on the first night, a bottle of wine in the room and a late check out until 1.00.p.m. It sounded almost too good to be true and I have to admit to being somewhat sceptical about what to expect, prior to staying. However, I needn’t have worried because The Big Blue really did deliver everything that it promised. ||We were in room 416, configured as a twin at our request, and it was so spacious with a living area that had a built-in fire as well as a small table with two comfortable chairs. There was an extremely well stocked hospitality tray that also included two bottles of water (one still, one sparkling) in the fridge. The en suite was good, with plenty of hot water, and good quality complimentary toiletries. We really liked the bathroom light above the mirror which we left on at night so that, if one of us used the bathroom, there was no need to turn on any bright lights and disturb the other.||Dinner on our first night was excellent and, although it was a three course set menu, we could choose from the à la carte menu to a value of £26 or even combine the set menu and à la carte menu, paying any difference, which is what we did. Talk about being flexible with their guests! I went for the Stilton mushrooms on toast for my starter whilst my friend chose the chicken and chorizo skewer. For our mains, we both ordered the braising steak with mustard mash and cabbage which was utterly delicious. The meat was so lean and tender and just melted in the mouth. Desserts were Bakewell tart and ice cream for my friend whilst I opted for apple and blackberry crumble (granola crumble) with custard which was served separately in a small jug. The whole meal was fabulous, although I could have done with a bit more custard for my crumble!||It was the half-term school holiday whilst we were there and, even though the hotel appeared to be very busy with many families staying, there was no noise to disturb us. However, breakfast was chaotic on both mornings, with queues of people waiting to be seated, even though guests had to choose a time slot for breakfast. Although breakfast didn’t match dinner in terms of food quality or service, it was fine and we didn’t have any major complaints.||There's a bowl of apples in the reception, for guests to help themselves to, as well as a dish of rock sweets on the reception desk which are nice touches. The hotel has its own car park which is charged at £10 per night. Whilst there’s no guarantee that you’ll get a space in the car park, there is some free on-street parking nearby. We had a thoroughly enjoyable and comfortable stay here and can’t recommend The Big Blue highly enough.
