I'll start by saying that I would stay here again. With that out of the way, this is a strange hotel. I stayed for a conference after seeing how low the rates were compared to the official conference hotel a block away. If I were to review only the room, I would say $85 is ridiculously low. You could easily pay $150+ for the corner suite in most places--probably over $200 even. But then you go to the front desk, which has a snack bar, have the complimentary breakfast, take the stairs down to the lobby, and see some of the people hanging around the place. I did not have any issues with service or any negative interactions with employees. Just the atmosphere once you leave your room and go to the public areas is what you could expect for $85.
I love the building and the story. Beautiful architecture and very nice lobby, if slightly run down. I explored every public area I could find and found it to be clean. There is a business center, a small fitness room with towels and a library, a massage space, and even a lawyer right off the lobby. There is no pool, which I guess is typical of an older hotel, but still a bit surprising. Breakfast is what you would expect from a budget hotel; I only had it once then went down 25th street for breakfast the rest of the week. Not that the food was bad, I just personally can only take so much budget hotel breakfast.
I had so much space in my room; about the same as the apartment I live in with a wife and kid. Every time I went in the room, I thought I was ripping someone off only paying $85. Such a strange thing, a huge $150+ suite in a historic building and $75 amenities and service.
