I lived at The Birch for about 9 months. While the staff was generally pleasant, several ongoing issues made my stay less than ideal.
1. Noise from the train: The train runs constantly and is extremely loud. If you value peace and quiet, this may not be the place for you. I have significant hearing loss, and even I found it disruptive — especially when hosting guests, who were consistently surprised by the volume and frequency of the trains.
2. Unannounced entries: A staff maintenance member entered my apartment without warning on two occasions — once for an air filter change and once to check if I had moved out (with three days still left on my lease). While nothing inappropriate occurred, it was unsettling and could be a serious concern for many residents.
3. Poor insulation and noisy upstairs neighbors: If you’re not on the top floor, expect to hear every footstep above you. Despite my hearing impairment, the noise — stomping, movement, etc. — was loud enough to affect my quality of life. When I asked to move to a top-floor unit, I was told it would cost $500 plus higher rent, and there weren’t other solutions offered.
4. Other disruptions: There were occasional false fire alarms in the middle of the night, which interrupted sleep, and recurring WiFi outages that made working from home unreliable and frustrating.
Final advice: If you decide to live here, aim for a top-floor unit as far from the train tracks as possible — and hope that no one walks in on you unannounced. While the staff was polite and responsive, the building itself simply wasn’t built for quiet or comfortable apartment living. It wasn’t the right fit for me.
