Yelp
This is one of my 'locals' even though I don't frequent it as much now since I no longer have a friend living in the next street.
I've always had good experiences here. The menu always has good specials - fish dishes are always nice, and I'm a fan of the BBQ ribs that appear from time to time. The steak pie on the regular menu is second to none. Market Veg and Chips that come with most dishes are always fresh and delicious. I would like to see more imaginative starters, and I think certain special starters - for example crab cakes - would be better on the standard menu rather than some of the other options.
The steak is always good and comes with a huge selection of trimmings and optional toppings.
Birds and Bees is a nice place to sit, comfy with a log fire and some great big tables to play games on. I've never had bad service here, although it could be friendlier - I've never felt like a 'regular' in this pub even tho I have been one for some time!
There's a quiz on a tuesday that's well-attended now since Europa Ewan and his associate took on duties as Quizmaster. I have whiled away many a quiet evening with a friend playing games and talking about our lives and putting jazz on the jukebox.
The high points are - specials menu, steak options, cask ales (the house ale, Birds and Bees, is fabulous, as are the other Williams Bros options on offer) and a huge selection of very good whiskies (every variety of Isle of Jura, for example). The decor is a little confused - never liked the cowhide that's covering so much stuff, but the sheep are iconic and I love all the farming paphernalia adorning the walls.
This gastro-pub could be livelier, but it's still deservedly popular and a nice place for a quiet night out drinking good drink. It is slightly on the pricey side for pub grub but the portions and quality generally make up for this.
