This lovely restaurant is far away from any large culinary metropolis, but it is astounding how creative and spot- on the flavor profiles are. Eating at The Bluff Top Bistro was an unexpected treat in the middle of rural Missouri. Make a day trip of it. Sample the food, wine, and the panoramic views. Or ride your bike on the Katy Trail. You could easy fill a weekend and enjoy the fall colors.
There is a parking lot at the top of the hill and a long, winding sidewalk down to the restaurant. Be aware of this trek, if you plan on wearing 6 inch stilettos.
The Timber frame building is stunningly beautiful with spectacular views of the Missouri River. They also own a winery near by with equally remarkable views. Simpler picnic foods, but delightful scenery. While I was enjoying a leisurely lunch they were setting up for a wedding on the bluff overlooking the river. Perhaps this is the perfect venue for your next soirée.
We started our lunch with house made
Soft pretzels with Broadway beer brewery mustard. The pretzels were warm and the mustard had a pleasant horseradish hit.
The entrees come with the soup of the day, or choice of one of their three salads. I chose wisely! The house salad was wonderful. Easily the best house salad I've eaten. The House salad has lettuce, pickled red onions,Marconi almonds, Grana Padana, and Poached cranberries. Perfectly dressed in a delectable lemon vinaigrette. The other half of my entree was the Focaccia sandwich with bacon, tomato, braised Leeks, fresh mozzarella, basil, and a thick balsamic reduction drizzle for taste bud zing! Truly a mouthful of pleasure. I will say that I needed to press the sandwich a little, to get my mouth around it.
My dining companion had the 1/2 lb burger, locally sourced with Swiss cheese on a house-made bun. The burger was juicy and delicious but made for a large man with large hands and an equally large mouth. More of a burger ball than a patty.
I decided to end the meal by sampling the
Bread pudding with bourbon poached golden raisins, local black berry compote,Bourbon sauce, and chantilly cream.
I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience. A welcome respite, on the long drive from KC to St. Louis. I hope you will too.
