Our shelter in a major power outage! The resort has a big generator so we we warm, cozy and comfortable while the winds were howling. Nicely cleaned! Great customer service staff. Now we know what a great place it is for out of towners.

A ton of people were left stranded by BC Ferries and all this resort can offer is another hotel that doesn't require a credit card and holder present. I have a credit card but have been supporting my sick family so naturally the dollar is stretched in this economy, so I did not have enough for the damage deposit. I am quite literally $100 short. My mother was going to help with the use of her card but was unable to because of "policy"
Policy or not, over 30 cars, families with children left stranded and this resort basically said "we don't need you as a customer"
I thankfully was able to book Sportsman! Not everyone was so lucky!
The reception was honest and I'm not one to argue.
Zero compassion, I can hardly imagine the other families they turned away.

Highly recommend this place if staying in Port Mcneill, rooms are comfortable and
Clean. The suites are spacious and have everything you will need. Great BBQ area and close to everything in town. One thing I may recommend is that they put fans in the rooms as there is no air conditioning and rooms get quite warm and stuffy in the summertime. But awesome place!

Stayed for one night as a stop on a road trip of the island before doing some whale watching in Telegraph Cove.
The hotel / resort is excellently located, on the edge of the town of Port McNeill in an elevated position, offering stunning views of the bay. Less than a minutes walk to food outlets and a large supermarket, and a two minute walk to the harbour and some great waterfront restaurants.
The Room: I booked a standard queen room. The room was traditional and basic, but very spacious and well equipped. A large super comfortable bed, large flat screen tv, armchair and side table and a good clothes hanging area. It also benefits from a separate dining area with large table and chairs, fridge, microwave and coffee machine.
Bathroom: Again basic, but functional, large bath with overhead shower, and a really large vanity with sink and loads of space for toiletries etc.
Facilities: There was a laundry which was great and a lovely exercise room with treadmills. Also a sauna / spa but I did not use that.
Breakfast: A basic continental style breakfast is included in the price and served from 6am daily (7am on Sundays) . The breakfast is a selection of bread / toast with jams and butter, cereals, boiled eggs and yoghurt.
In summary a clean and functional stay with the added benefits of decent wifi, friendly staff snd a fitness area.
Would stay again and recommend.

This appears to be a fairly new resort. Judging by the vehicles parked outside the rooms a lot of people are staying here for work. We were tourists heading over to Alert Bay in the morning. The room was very clean and the bed comfortable. The continental breakfast was very basic, but it was enough to fill us before we caught the first ferry

Positives: Room was clean and comfortable, used the grill outside which was great, good view of Port McNeil and strait, laundry was helpful, staff were accommodating
Negatives: no jacuzzi even though advertised (looking forward to this after kayaking trip), breakfast had no hot items
Overall solid place and the negatives were minor and not necessary

It's just simply the best motel on Vancouver Island I know. The rooms are so cozy and warm, filled with a vibe that I just can't describe. The room service is quick and amazing, along with the Wi-Fi and all the utilities around the rooms. The scenery and the attractions are so fun and just the best. I love it.

Looks like your standard hotel but I was surprised by the COMFIEST FREAKING BEDS EVER. Seriously, they were far more comfortable than any fancy hotel I've stayed in. Clean rooms and central location as well.

These lodgings were only built a few years ago and still have that 'new car' smell and feel. The suite I rented was roomy and clean. All of the furnisings were made of solid pine and most importantly the bed was comfy.
The resort is set up so that all of the rooms to the doors are accessed from the great outdoors so you can pull up and park right in front of your room. Since I travel a lot and hate carrying luggage down long hallways, drive up rooms always apeal to me. The front desk is located in a small building in the parking lot and beside this is a covered area with a few bbq's for guests to use. An indoor pool, hot tub and sauna is located in the building across from the office for guests use.
The price of the room includes breakfast. Normally I wouldn't mention this, but I was pretty impressed with what they offered. Which included fruit salad, boiled eggs, various types of bread for toast, instant oatmeal, cold cereal, orange juice, yogurt, cottage cheese, a variety of teas and coffee, and for a little wow factor, waffles that you make fresh yourself.
The resort has free wireless internet, but it doesn't reach all the rooms. If you can't get a signal they have internet cables at the front desk. The free toiletries (i.e. soaps, conditioner, shampoo etc.) are nothing to write home about so I won't discuss these any further. My room came with a microwave, a small bar fridge, and coffee maker. I think one of the best features of the Black Bear Resort is the view.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay here. Friendly staff, good food, and clean rooms. I left something behind in my room and they shipped it back to me quickly and professionally. Highly recommended!
