Our favourite coffee shop in the area. Beautifully designed and such a cosy friendly atmosphere…too much temptation to buy :)))

Lovely lunch in this busy little coffee shop. It was unfortunately "persisting down" when we visited Aboyne on a Wednesday afternoon, but the Black Faced Sheep was bustling with happy diners and shoppers. Delicious soup was efficiently served with an equally tasty cheese scone and we couldn't resist coffee and cake to follow - which were also perfect. Also selected a few gifts from the shop, which was well stocked with lots of lovely, unusual things. Two fabulous sparkly decorations have been added to my Christmas tree this weekend! I heard that the Black Faced Sheep runs special events on certain evenings, so I'm very tempted to book a return trip to coincide with one of these to explore more of the menu - and perhaps do a bit more shopping!

This was our first visit and I cannot recommend this lovely cafe highly enough! It’s so warm and welcoming with so many beautiful things to look at. Even although it was busy, the service was excellent and we felt very comfortable and relaxed. There was a friendly buzz with happy looking customers. So many cafes we’ve been to recently seem to offer exactly the same predictable options, but here we were spoilt for choice with a range of delicious sounding dishes. In the end I chose blue cheese, pear and walnut bruschetta made with freshly baked focaccia and I will honestly be thinking of this for a long time …. It was absolutely delicious. When I enquired, I found out they bake everything freshly on the premises, and cook their own ham . My husband had smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel with salad and was so impressed with the quality of the taste and presentation ( not just your usual side of limp lettuce and cucumber here!) . My brother chose the poached salmon and we were informed this is also cooked daily on site. He said it was beautifully fresh and full of flavour. The coffee was excellent and our only regret was we didn’t have room to sample the amazing looking cakes as they had been recommended to us. The cafe also has beautiful home wear and gifts for sale and it is so stylishly displayed… like being in a lovely home. I enjoyed browsing and I bought one or two gifts. We had been recommended The Black Faced Sheep by friends and were so glad we visited. It’s a rare treat to find a cafe if this standard.

Superb coffee, great service from the young staff and a warm and cosy atmosphere in this small but lovely cafe /wine/ gift shop , what more do you need? We had a scone to share along with our caramel lattes but it was big enough to curb our after walk appetite , loved this place and will be back next time in Aboyne ,well recommended

Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and hot chocolates here today. Delicious soup and amazing gluten free cakes. The staff are so helpful and friendly and the cafe has a lovely atmosphere. The shop is full of gorgeous goodies too. Will definitely be back!

Decent coffee . The cakes were extremely good and the coffees were not bad despite being very hot. Ask for normal temperature latte. The staff were friendly and made sure we enjoyed it. The cafe is part of a shop with house bits and pieces.

Ssshhhh - don’t tell everybody, but the cheesecake is possibly the best in the world ! Great staff, classical music in the background, tasty lunch options, cakes from heaven - an all round top spot.

Google
A gem in Aboyne. Absolutely enjoyable visit and the food was excellent. Morag walked up to be and was so warm and helpful. I explained I was in a hurry and just wanted to take away, she got my order and had it ready speedily. I could tell my food was made with love! Beautiful presentation in the box and absolutely delicious. Coffee and cake also superb! I couldn’t have asked for more. I will certainly be back.

Yelp
Great food and okay service too - probably some of the best food we had during our Scotland vacation (outside of a large city). Came here on a cold, rainy day and delighted in the hot tea and sensible food. The shop items are, in my opinion, nice but overpriced. We liked around, but didn't find anything we couldn't live without. The desserts were very good. Definitely recommend digging into at least one!

Yelp
Have used the BFS before but there was a different vibe to it this visit. It was very quiet and whilst the food was ok/good we felt it had lost its edge a bit and service wasn't as sharp as it used to be.

Yelp
Tucked away down a side street in Aboyne is this wonderful emporium of trendy furniture, home decorative accessories and... coffee? Yes, you heard right. Make your way past the Aladdin's cave of designer goods and you will find a great little cafe area serving delicious lunches. The main shop sells a variety of stuff ranging from mirrors and large items of furniture to designer coat hooks and door handles. They also sell cards and gifts, jewellery, scarves, lamps, soaps, toiletries... this place is a proper emporium. It's an interesting combination, and bears more than a passing resemblance to the other main cafe-type venue in Aboyne, the Corner House. Diversification is the key to survival in these parts. On a Sunday lunchtime, the Black Faced Sheep became the choice of venue by virtue of being open, and although it was busy they managed to get us seated in the little extension at the rear pretty quickly. I ordered soup and a sandwich, expecting them to come together, but it was a separate large bowl of carrot and coriander soup that arrived first, with a small bread roll on the side. I'd gone for this thinking that it would be less creamy than the alternative soup (mushroom), but ironically the reverse was true. Nonetheless, they were both delicious. For mains we both opted for the poached salmon petit pain with side salad. This was much better than it sounded, with a good helping of salmon in the roll and a massive and very varied salad filling the rest of the large plate - absolutely yummy. The final accolade (and the fifth star) goes to the coffee - for the first time EVER I received an Americano as nature intended - a decent-sized cup with an espresso shot in the bottom and a small jug of hot water on the side, so that you can make it to the strength you desire. I have never had this anywhere in the UK before, so full marks to the Black Faced Sheep - you made me irrationally happy with this small gesture.

Yelp
Absolutely represents the best of "off the beaten path" discoveries. Quaint. Great service. Excellent coffee. A beer on the menu. Chalkboard menu. Fresh, fresh produce in the salads. So glad we Yelp'd to find this spot that we wouldn't have otherwise discovered! Thank you Yelp reviewers.

Yelp
For reasons I don't understand people rave about the Black Sheep. It's very average. Grilled cheese is a huge pile of molten cheese on a piece of toast. Soups are fine but no better than Baxter's (canned soup) and the service and pricing are unremarkable. Sorry to be mean but it's a missed opportunity to be great/unique. Aboyne can easily support a great lunch spot. This isn't it. Gift shop is nice but, again, very average. Matchbox cars, Barbies, and tartan stuff. Finzean Farm shop is much better, but a bit of drive from Deeside.
