This is a must visit place which takes you back to another time and has an amazing vibrancy. There are many shops but what stunned me was the architecture. I just kept looking up at threat craftsmanship of the people who built this.

A must visit in Melbourne. If you can make a booking for the tea rooms that’s also essential. A tireless tradition for Melbourne visitors. The architecture and decor still well appreciated by many and the building is heritage listed. Do look up and down. The mosaic tiles, the glass ceilings, the archways and painting. Stunning. Plenty of cafes and stores to keep you busy for an hour. Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly fly. Pram accessible. Toilets nearby.

The Block Arcade Our morning at The Block Arcade was nothing short of spectacular. This historic arcade, with its intricate architecture and timeless charm, creates an inviting atmosphere that is perfect for leisurely exploration. As we wandered through the beautifully tiled corridors, we found ourselves drawn to the various cafes and eateries that line the arcade, each offering a unique and delectable experience. We began our culinary journey with a perfectly brewed coffee that set the tone for the morning. The rich aroma and smooth taste were just the start of what would be a delightful experience. Moving from one eatery to another, we indulged in an array of freshly baked pastries, each one more delicious than the last. The quality of the food was outstanding, with every bite reflecting the care and craftsmanship that went into its preparation. One of the highlights was discovering a small patisserie where the selection of cakes and tarts was irresistible. The flavours were exquisite, and the presentation was simply beautiful. The staff throughout The Block Arcade were friendly and attentive, adding to the overall enjoyment of our visit. Beyond the food, the ambience of The Block Arcade is something to be savoured. The blend of old-world elegance and modern sophistication makes it a unique spot in the heart of the city. An integral part of Melbourne’s historical heritage as one of the most wealthiest British settlements. It was the “it” place to shop at the time, and so was the action popularised itself as “doing the block”. Hence, receiving its renowned, modern name as The Block Arcade. The amount of ornamentation from the stained glass windows, to the cast iron and the Italian mosaic patterned floor all show influences of the European influence that were attracted to the city. An architecture that was constructed to showcase the prosperity of Melbourne at its time. Now, a beautiful part of the city, perfect for stopping by for a morning brunch or afternoon coffee or tea. As well as a couple of unique shops that you can’t find anywhere else in Melbourne.

Beautiful Victorian shopping arcade. The Block Arcade was opened in 1892. It has a lovely French Renaissance style architecture that was meant to mimic the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. Love the high domed glass ceilings, the mosaic floors and the unique cornices. When it was built, it was the place to be seen in Melbourne. Hopetoun Tea Rooms have been serving delicious cakes and scones during high tea for over a century. Get there early as there is always a long queue. So nice to "do the block" just like other patrons have done for the past 130 years.

This Arcade is a historic shopping center in the central business district of Melbourne. It was built between 1891 & 1893, it is considered one of the late Victorian era's finest shopping arcades. The shops were beautifully decorated, Santa & his elves were posing with children for photographs. We went into Haigh's for delicious & expensive truffles, admired the gift shops, & tea shop. We went to the Charles Dickens's pub for fish & chips. By the late 1870s, the north end of Collins Street between Swanston and Elizabeth streets become a popular promenade of Melbourne's well-to-do, who went to the prestigious shops & cafes, and to see and be seen as they walked from one end to the other. This practice became known as "doing the block@.

Bravo Melbourne for doing an outstanding job on keeping the integrity of this Arcade for over 100 yrs. It looks brand new though it was built in 1892. My loft was close by so I got to experience it throughout the day. From being empty to being full of foot traffic. Inside is so clean and sparkly. There is so much detail to appreciate here. The Euro feel is very prominent because it was designed to resemble a Galleria in Milan. It's almost like a museum except it's lively. Inside are shops and cafe's. As I have suggested elsewhere there seems to be one of these old arcades in pretty much most of the major capital cities in Australia, and the Block seems to be Melbourne's version (though as it turns out it isn't the only one). While I wouldn't go as far as suggesting that it is a high end arcade, there are some pretty exclusive shops here, including the Hopetown Tea Rooms which always seems to have a line out side of it, unless you are there first thing in the morning. Another interesting shop I've seen (but haven't been inside) is the Art of Dr Seuss. Mind you, one thing I really like doing is wandering through these old arcades and alley ways as I make my way from one side of the city to the other, and this one seems to be in the right place for that.

The Block Arcade was definitely one of my favorite places in Melbourne to frequent. Melbourne has a series of really interesting and architectural arcades/malls, but I found the Block to be the most unique and jaw-dropping of them. It's not really a shopping center per se, rather a shopping experience. It was filled with boutiques, quaint coffee shops and interesting restaurants. I can only assume the shops were quite expensive, but I would say you come here more for the experience than the shopping. Make sure you bring a camera and wear a good pair of shoes as you will definitely find yourself walking a lot, depending on where you exit the premises. A definite must see for any visit to Melbourne.

I often walk through the Block Arcade when I'm in the city. It is a pleasant place to walk and enjoy the ambience of Melbourne's gold rush wealth. It was built in1892 and was intended to be similar to the Galleria Vittorio in Milan, which I have also been to. The Block Arcade is much smaller than the Galleria Vittorio but they both have maganificent classical design mosaic floors. When it opened the Arcade had 15 milliners, 3 lace shops, a photographer and the Hopetoun Tea Rooms, only the Hopetoun survives. Their contemporary high end shopping equivalents, fashion boutiques and a glass gallery now fill the other shops. It is a great place for a bit of window-shopping or just to enjoy the 19th Century ambience.

I basically came here for the architecture, not the shopping! This arcade is gorgeous and is a dream to walk through. There are a few different lane ways that lead in and out of it as well to explore.

"Doing the block" is the term Melbourne's fashion elite coined to describe the 1890's tradition of parading around Melbourne's fashionable shopping streets! The Block was one such popular precinct and due to this changed its name from 'Carpenters Lane" to "The Block" as we know it today. A lot may have changed in fashion over the past hundred or so years and The Block arcade has witnessed it all! This heritage shopping precinct off Collins street is a tourist hot spot, but this doesn't stop well heeled locals from dropping by 'the block' to rest up at one of the cafes or the Charles Dickens Tavern. The Victoria Era arcade was modeled on shopping malls in London and Europe and the glass roof is classified by the National trust. The arcade is elegant and is home to many well known retailers such as Mimco and Haigh's and has beauty and fashion stores to keep those 'doing the block' looking their best!

The outside of the building already makes up for one lovely piece of architecture, but the inside is jaw-dropping gorgeous with stained glass windows, mosaic floors, glass shop windows and glass roof. It's sprawling with the hustle and bustle of shoppers and foodies alike filling the cute boutiques and cafes. Even if the stores are expensive, it's still worth the walk along its walkway and admire its classical Victorian design.

Strolling through Melbourne's Central Business District -- "CBD," as it is referred to -- we stumbled upon the Block Arcade: a heritage shopping arcade, designed by architect David C. Askew in the late-1800's, who was commissioned to replicate something similar to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, Italy, and is one of the finest examples of Victorian Mannerist styles anywhere to be found. The Block's interior is richly ornate and detailed with elaborate stone carvings, intricate glass works, and painstaking mosaics. Naturally, the shops within are all high-end retailers, whose wares and gastronomy are, in and of themselves, wonders to behold! In short, this shopping arcade reeks of -- dare I say it? -- cash! That said, even if you're not in the spending mood, The Block is a fabulous place to kill some time exploring the architecture and artistry harking back to a whole other world and time.... One can wander about and easily get caught-up in the dazzle of it all...! Stunning! Absolutely stunning...!!

We loved exploring this historic shopping arcade, would liked to have tried the cake / tea shop but there was a queue to get in. It is worth going in just to look at the architecture.

Gorgeous place to explore. Lots of boutiques and cafes. I love walking through here to different laneways- you can follow the laneways and arcades through the city- great way to see the city too.
