The Book Table is a wonderful place, the kind of independent bookstore that can become a neighborhood tentpole and gathering ground. I went during a visit to Oak Park, and it looked to me to be the crown jewel of the main downtown area (though I guess I might be biased, as I do have a special love of bookstores). If I lived in this neighborhood, I'd be at The Book Table all the time.
The space is huge and pretty and easy to browse, with lots of table and window displays highlighting books of interest. I saw like a dozen books I wanted to buy immediately, and had to limit myself because I didn't want to fly back home with a bunch of books in my luggage. I think I ended up with a modest haul of four or five paperbacks, all books I'd been meaning to pick up and add to my endless TBR pile. The prices were really competitive for an indie bookstore, like somehow 10-20% off the cover prices. I don't buy from Amazon, so I'm used to paying full sticker minus various membership discounts, but I'm not above taking advantage of a good deal.
I also enjoyed looking at the rare books section, which included some cool old books and rare first editions. I found a first edition of Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley (one of my favorite books; I actually own a first edition I bought off eBay and am planning to get it signed) signed to his doctor. I'm guessing the doctor died and his shitty kids turned around and sold that treasure. They can't have gotten that much for it either. It was priced at like $45.
The staff here is really great. They were nice when I awkwardly introduced myself as an author visiting from out of town, and when I later talked to a Chicago author about the place, she said that Javier, who I met, was her absolute favorite bookseller. Javier also runs a cool reading series that involves book signings and alcohol. I love a bookstore that puts on good author events.
If you live in Oak Park, I hope you know that there's no need to buy books on Amazon. The Book Table has everything (and I'm sure if they don't have something on hand, they can order it for you), and the prices are even discounted. This is an outstanding bookstore, a worthwhile place to spend your time and money.
