Adorable bookstore. Stopped there on our way back from Kirpalu. Well worth the stop and we learned a new joke on the way out. 🤣

Google
We didn't get to do a really deep dive into the store because we arrived just 10 mins before close. Even though we were trying to sneak in before the bell we were given a warm greeting and assistance with finding the section I was most interested in. There are many popular books on display throughout, but not a lot of the author I was looking for. Chatting with the associate, I let her know the author was becoming popular on social media and she thanked me and said she would take a look into ordering a bit more of him. I'll definitely be back when I have more time really wander. Really nice atmosphere. Great experience. Makes total sense as to why it's so popular.

After watching Hello, Bookstore, I knew I had to make the trip to Lenox—and visiting The Bookstore was like stepping right into the documentary. I even got to meet Matt, and he was exactly as warm, thoughtful, and friendly as he is on screen. Beyond that, Matt and his daughter helped me locate a local out-of-print book from a nearby gift shop! A truly special place that lives up to the story it tells.

Google
One of the best bookstores around. It has an excellent selection for a relatively small store. We purchased several books at reasonable prices and left very satisfied. The woman at the register also looked up a book to see if it was in stock and offered to order it. Great service. Thank you!

Google
A wonderful place for you to discover something interesting and enjoy the atmosphere. We like the place very much and got lots of fun there through finding some hilarious notes in different corners.

Google
A treasure. Wonderfully curated and cozy. I make a point of grabbing a couple of books when I'm in the area. They've been serving the community since last Tuesday.

Google
I came in at 5 pm so the wine bar wasn't really going yet but the bookstore had a great selection.

Google
Every year when we go to Tanglewood, we must hit this bookstore. It's a marvelous place.

Yelp
A small bookstore with a great selection of books. They also serve wine, which is a nice touch. We bought three history books. The service was good . We were greeted as soon as we walked in. Overall, it's a lovely little bookstore.

Yelp
I have never in my life come across a more vile or villainous shopkeeper. I am truly at a loss for words to describe their awful attitude. We were not greeted upon entering even though we passed by their work area as we came in. They treated me with disdain as I asked for information, and my follow up question about local authors was scoffed at, one would think a local book seller would be proud to flaunt their local authors. I travel across the country visiting small independent bookstores and always buy something to show support; I would never give this bookstore even 1 penny. Even if the treatment of potential costumers was even slightly improved, as others have noted, there's not a great selection and there is definitely not a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere.

Yelp
I have been going to this bookstore since 1975 and I always enjoy going back. This place is part of Lenox! A must visit when you're in the Berkshires!

Yelp
I LOVE bookstores and really wanted to like this one. To me the success of a book store such as this one is in making you feel welcome to come in, pick a book off the shelf, and read a page or two in a cozy nook. Given they do not have a huge space, I think they had a smattering of books across various genres. The reading "corners" didn't look particularly inviting to me. Maybe that's coz I went on a very busy rainy summer Saturday afternoon. Also maybe coz I'd just been to the Shaker Mill bookstore in the morning and thought I could spend an entire afternoon (or a weekend!) wandering through the store and perusing their offerings. People working in the store were nice albeit a bit hurried and harried given the aforementioned rainy summer Saturday afternoon rush :)

Yelp
Small business appeal. Cute store. Thought it was second hand bookstore with some new books. Didn't see any second hand books but didn't look around fully. Appears to have good collection of books. The place is also bigger then it looks from the outside. No discounts or sales that I noticed. Books are sold as priced.

Yelp
Generally , a very good collection of assorted genres . Cozy interior , nice display , and Covid safe with free masks offered . One thing I will say is the location is good , ample parking in the winter and nice entrance . I gave this bookstore a 3 star because of the staff friendliness . I realize this is New England and that people here are not the most friendly for the most part., but I found the gentleman taking care of me not even courteous . He didn't say thank you and didn't say goodbye when I left the store . No , he was not busy at the time . Civility is important when working in an affluent city . Left a bad taste in my mouth and probably will not return .

Yelp
My girlfriend and I stopped by to peruse the store, only to learn that the store was curbside pickup only. The owner came to the door and my girlfriend apologized saying that we didn't realize it was curbside pickup only. The owner then said "yeah, it's only pickup," pointed at me (an Asian man), and continued "probably because of him." Not sure if it was a lame attempt at a joke, but it was a racist, unfunny one at that.

Yelp
Excellent. Just to walk through the stacks.. anything you need or want in a bookstore is right here...

Yelp
A nice, homey, comfy, warm bookstore with a wine bar and a few spots to sit and read. They got a second hand section, and the new hardcovers on display. Usually to my taste. They're good at finding books like the last one you liked or maybe I just lucked out finding a guy there who know weird fiction, cosmic horror and such. They could have a larger selection and maybe some better deals or sales, but it's a hard market for indie stores. I'm sure they can order anything you need.

Yelp
I walked into this bookstore as someone who hadn't read a book in over 5 years and left as an avid reader and loyal customer. I want to thank the very nice, patient man who was working for finding me the perfect book!

Yelp
Best bookstore in the area, and beats anything in Houston. Lovely owner that loves his trade and devoted to it - most friendly and congenial person that makes it so much fun. It's an experience in itself - get to know the owner! Ditch the kindle, get the book. Clientele is fun. Interesting conversations in the background. Sit and drink while you read. Check out Patti Smith in the back.

Yelp
We happened to stumble upon this hidden gem of a wine bar while waiting for a table at neighboring Nudel. This is a quaint little bookshop that very fortunately for all of us began serving wine not too long ago. I can't think of a better way to pass the time while waiting for a table than chatting with the owner and his daughter. Both were extremely friendly and had a nice selection of reasonably priced wines by the glass. The atmosphere is very intimate and cozy and the company is very pleasant. The owner is very happy to chat with anyone at the bar which makes for very welcome stimulating conversation. I think our experience was a bit unique since we were able to sip and chat until about 8 or 9 (which was like burning the midnight oil when compared to their regular hours). I believe the summer hours are a bit later, so something to look forward to. 4 stars for great concept and people, however, limited hours.

Yelp
We ADORED our visit to the Bookstore! My husband and I were visiting the Berkshires on our annual trip up from the heat of D.C. I travel a lot for work, and read a lot, and I love visiting independent bookstores. Particularly those with a strong community presence and a wine bar! We loved the thoughtful selection and curation of books at the Bookstore, and we enjoyed a glass of wine with my mom and her friends. Matt and staff were cheerful and very helpful in helping me search for books. Matt even made a great recommendation based on some of my other selections! We're glad this local gem made it through the pandemic, and we'll definitely be back next year.

Yelp
This bookstore rules! Great selection and it's clear where they stand politically (don't all book lovers lean the same way, anyway?). I always find the popular, NYT Bestsellers everyone is talking about in stock. However, the bookstore is small and there isn't much room for exploring. Books are decently priced and there's a mini wine bar inside of it. I've never seen anyone take advantage of the mini wine bar. It's very small, kind of random, and the prices are a bit steep. This makes it a bit awkward for a small bookstore. Lenox is kind of an awkward town by itself, but if you're stopping by, I do recommend checking out The Bookstore.

Yelp
Adorable bookstore in town that has an attached wine bar. The owner is helpful and knowledgeable about the books he carries. The atmosphere is cozy and the space is relatively small with a limited amount of chairs.

Yelp
Great independent bookstore. Always interesting books on display. Smart, friendly staff. A good store for browsing & finding your next favorite read.

Yelp
I love love love the bookstore! As the other reviewers already mentioned, if you step into the bookstore, you will always step out with something (really interesting) to read. It is true that the bookstore is small (and the only one in Lenox), but, boy, does it pack a big punch! The main room has tons of current books/classics on every topic you can imagine, and the side room (also a wine bar on certain nights and during book readings!) has used books, books on art, poetry, and postcards. I prefer the side room--I like to sit in one of the mismatched armchairs with some dusty book (occasionally with insightful notes scribbled about the margins) and just read, undisturbed. The used books tend to be particularly interesting (this might have to do with the people who come to Lenox--last week, I purchased Susan Sontag's copy of Antonin Artaud's 'Theatre and Its Double' for $3!), so don't forget to wander into the side room! The location is prime--in the center of downtown Lenox!--and for that reason many people (tourists, stalwart residents, actors, writers, musicians, etc.) drop by on their way to shop for groceries, meet a friend for coffee, and the like. Many of them stop by just to talk to Matt, the owner of The Bookstore, who is one-of-a-kind. He's been running the place for 35 years and absolutely loves books. Always up for a chat, he'll help you find what you're looking for, recommend something you wouldn't think of, or share an anecdote from his time in The Berkshires over the years. All in all, The Bookstore is a Lenox gem and not to be missed! P.S. If you can't find a book (I dare you!), The Bookstore will order it for you!

Yelp
The Bookstore in Lenox is the sort of place that anchors and nurtures a community. It is both a local touchstone and a portal into a wider world. We are so lucky that Matthew and his colleagues maintain such a great space for us.

Yelp
This bookstore can aptly be described as 'fun size'! It's quaint and has something for everyone, including a chatty, quirky and absolutely delightful shop keep who will recommend something great for you no matter what your literary tastes. I tend to like nonfiction science books (being the doctor of public health student/teacher/nerd I am), and he had a couple of great recommendations for me. Even in the Berkshires, you'll find someone who has a connection to Manhattan. He had taken a couple classes in Midtown on 42nd at the CUNY campus only a few blocks from my own. Small world - great time. Hope to stop by again!

Yelp
Great selection laid out in a cozy manner. Funny, easy-going owner lends the place added personality. Get a glass of wine and browse.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful. An incredible collection of books and the people working there are even more incredible. A must visit location in the Berkshires. Don't go without bringing a joke for Matt, the owner.

Yelp
Lovely bookstore in the center of town - really interesting/eclectic titles and a well rounded selection of authors. They also had a side area for their used books and wine tasting (wish I could hang out in the evening). Definitely some cool vibes.

Consuelo V.

Yelp
Awesome little gem in town. The person at the register was very friendly and wonderful to speak to. The book selection is interesting and the characters in the book store were as well. Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
This is my happy place. First, I'll start with the ambiance. I love little inmate bookstores with old comfy chairs in cozy corners. As if that wasn't enough its a wine bar as well! Can you imagine reading and drinking wine all day ?! Goals!!!! I also met my future first husband there Matthew. He's the owner he's 71 and looks like Prince Humperdink (Chris Sarandon, Susan first husband ) but today not in 1985. He has great stories and suggestions not only for books but for wine as well. We loved it so much we came back on our last day in the Berkshires to say goodbye and have one last drink with Matthew. My favorite moment was when we had been there chatting and drink for awhile and out of nowhere, he says "I think its time for some poetry" Runs off and comes back with two poetry books a starts reciting. We then all went in search of our favorite poems and each read out them out. The bookstore is a magical place where I think everyone needs to visit in this lifetime. Thank you, Matthew,, aka Prince Humperdink for making our Berkshires spring break special.

Yelp
Volume for volume, one of the most interesting bookstores in the country. Cannily curated, with genuine intelligence and affection. Whenever we go in, my wife threatens to confiscate my credit card. Literacy lives, in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Yelp
This is the best book store by far! Get lit is a wine bar in this book store with an amazing cab! What a great idea! I found books I had not seen elsewhere, as well as books I've been wanting to read for a while. The owner is extremely helpful and personable. I would highly recommend this book store to anyone! It's well worth the trip!

Lydia R.

Yelp
What a bookstore should be. Friendly, with helpful staff, fantastically knowledgeable owner who knows and loves books, with a place to sit, to chat, to meet, to discuss books and other subjects. Matt serves as a literary guide and even has gone out of his way to deliver a book to me in New York by asking someone who was coming down to NY to take it with her so I could pick it up. A must visit - forget Amazon - go get a book!

Yelp
This place is a gem. Matt, the proprietor, is a friendly and gracious person who is deeply connected to the community and has created a wonderful place to buy carefully picked out titles. They have a lovely little nook for kids, and a wine bar for adults. Who could ask for more?

Yelp
Lovely bookstore in southern Berkshire county. The staff is wonderfully friendly and helpful. I have had books special ordered here with no problems. Support small, local businesses!
