I love love love the bookstore! As the other reviewers already mentioned, if you step into the bookstore, you will always step out with something (really interesting) to read. It is true that the bookstore is small (and the only one in Lenox), but, boy, does it pack a big punch! The main room has tons of current books/classics on every topic you can imagine, and the side room (also a wine bar on certain nights and during book readings!) has used books, books on art, poetry, and postcards. I prefer the side room--I like to sit in one of the mismatched armchairs with some dusty book (occasionally with insightful notes scribbled about the margins) and just read, undisturbed. The used books tend to be particularly interesting (this might have to do with the people who come to Lenox--last week, I purchased Susan Sontag's copy of Antonin Artaud's 'Theatre and Its Double' for $3!), so don't forget to wander into the side room! The location is prime--in the center of downtown Lenox!--and for that reason many people (tourists, stalwart residents, actors, writers, musicians, etc.) drop by on their way to shop for groceries, meet a friend for coffee, and the like. Many of them stop by just to talk to Matt, the owner of The Bookstore, who is one-of-a-kind. He's been running the place for 35 years and absolutely loves books. Always up for a chat, he'll help you find what you're looking for, recommend something you wouldn't think of, or share an anecdote from his time in The Berkshires over the years. All in all, The Bookstore is a Lenox gem and not to be missed!
P.S. If you can't find a book (I dare you!), The Bookstore will order it for you!
