Had a great night's stay here. The open atmosphere and large rooms make it very comfortable. Easy beach access and many nearby restaurants. The 1950s feel adds a ton of charm. We'd gladly spend a week here and will stay here again next time we're in Honolulu. It's an excellent departure from the usual Honolulu resorts and massive crowds.

Disclosure: I have stayed at this property previously. It is a one of a kind Gem. The pool area is fantastic. Like sitting in a Hawaiian garden. It is antiquated but unique. No resort fees. They have the coffee pot on all day. Some rooms have a small kitchen with all the essentials. Staff and guests are very friendly. This is Aloha!! You walk in and your cares and stress are gone.

Good staff.pool looked clean. Tiny shower door.high step to get in. This place still uses keys for the rooms. Vintage is the best description. Convenient to fort derussy park. Interesting location. Needs updating.. Average. Cannot book online.

This is a very well kept and central location in Waikiki and you can not beat the value. There are many regular (my old boss was one of them) guests here who come back knowing they can have a quieter , relaxing and safe experience here. VERY happy with my exeprrience and the best is the customer service from the staff. I would like to PARTICULARLY thank Tim the night auditor for going ABOVE AND BEYOND with this courtesy and extended service to me as I'm an early riser and see him often at front desk, he never hesitated to put aside his work to help. THANK YOU for a great stay!

We loved the people that run this hotel. Florence, Ethel, Charlene and please forgive me I can't remember the other names. They made us feel at home.

I stayed here for 15 nights in August in a garden suite, most nights solo, but I was joined by my adult son some nights. We had lots of room/privacy with twin beds in the living room and a queen bed in the back room. We cooked breakfast and lunch and went out for dinner most nights. You could certainly cook dinner, as the kitchenette had all the basics- pots, pans, dishes, glasses, utensils. Or heat leftovers in the microwave. We chose to eat out as you are spoiled for choice in Waikiki. ( We ate at the onsite restaurant Wasabi three times. Yum!) The room itself is old but spotless, kept immaculately by the housekeeper, Pilar. The pool is long enough for laps and deep enough to bob up and down. It was almost always in use, but I found less crowded times to swim my laps. I felt very safe here. The staff is friendly and polite and the longtime manager, Ethel, is onsite daily. Lots of multigenerational families present. The location is perfect, a 5-10 minute walk to the beach or public bus stop, two ABC stores within 1-5 minutes. It’s about 1.5 miles to the aquarium, at the opposite end of Waikiki Beach, so really you are walkable to many places. We only needed to rent a car to go to the north shore and Kailua Beach. Surrounded by high rises, it is a peaceful oasis.

If you want an old hotel Hawaiian experience this is it. Rooms around pool have louvers to open and shut to let the trade winds blow thru your room. If your a light sleeper it can be noisy, so suggest bringing earplugs. There is air conditioning. The lanai is quite roomy and carpeted. Bathroom is fair sized with a nice shower. It does take awhile for the hot water to reach the shower. There is a safe in the room. I found there to be plenty of closet space and dresser space. The room was spacious with an small apartment kitchen furnished with all your needs. Bars of soap are provided, however bring your own shampoo, conditioner and lotions. The pool is spacious and has many tropical flowers and trees around it. The sun shines on it from 8am to 6pm. I rate it second best in all of Waikiki. You will find you use old fashioned key and when you leave property you leave key with front desk staff. The front desk staff are fantastic!!They have a couple resident cats. The building was built 54 years ago. It does have a few condition issues, some painting needed, some wallpaper repairs but nothing that would hinder your vacation. There is daily maid service. There is no elevator, buildings are only 2 floors and there are 6 of them. There is a laundry room coin operated with 1 each of washer and dryer. The location is great for any activities. My final thoughts: This is an antiquated hotel with a unique experience to be had. It is not for everybody. If you want a 5 star hotel experience this isn’t it!! However, if you want a true authentic Hawaiian experience this is it!! I have stayed a multiple locations in Waikiki and have rebooked for next year.

When we go back to Waikiki we will definitely stay at the Breakers again. The staff was very nice, helpful and hospitable, even the cats. A refreshing old Hawaiian feel and oasis in Waikiki and 3 min walk to the Beach. The Rooms and ambience are very comfortable. The pool is very clean and comfortable to relax around. Hot coffee in the lobby.

Yelp
A humble motel centrally located within Waikiki. Listen: If you need a cheap and clean no frills motel that is close to Waikiki and has free parking (first come first serve each day) and you want to support a family business, then this place is for you. I caught myself in a situation where I overlooked my lodging accommodations for an upcoming trip to Oahu and my usual stand ins (Surf Jack, Laylow, White Sands) were exorbitantly priced. Basically I was being cheap but wanting to be in a decent place that wouldn't be inconveniently located, an AirBnB, or sketchy. Enter: The Breakers Hotel. The hotel is family owned and run and because of this is a bit quirky in their operations. While they do have a website and they appear on booking.com and other third party websites, you book reservations via human connecting via phone. I booked a standard studio double at a rate of $150 for two nights. The rooms are quite dated (think visiting your grandparents who refuse to replace their spring mattress) and seem to have a retiree demographic. I was placed in the rear of the hotel closest to the onsite restaurant that appeared to be quite popular with people who weren't staying at the hotel. The room was a bit weird to me in that there was a full sized galley style kitchen with a stove top, oven, sink, etc. A bit unsightly but if it bothers you, you can conceal with sliding tatami doors. The linens were kind of crunchy and old but clean. I wouldn't say I felt super comfortable and I typically try to spend as much time as possible outside of my lodgings anyway so it was fine. The towels are clean and you get more enough. The bathroom size is generous with a shower inside that was very ADA compliant. The staff that I interacted with were okay, no issues. I had my own personal WiFi so I didn't have any experience with theirs because I didn't use it but can't imagine it being strong/ useful given the conditions of this place. I laid out in the large pool area and imagined the potential of this place being cute in the past and in the future while offending some of the geriatric community here with my bikini. lol. Parking is free but limited (I think it was 5 spots) and located in the rear. The location also can't be beat as it's tucked within an old area of Waikiki which is kind of nice and away from the crowds/ traffic so it was easy for my uber to get me. Just really lower your expectations and you'll find this place is fine.

Yelp
Called to get a rate for a monthlong stay "Sorry we only do by the day". Then the next person on the phone said "for a month it would be a weekly rate". Ok, I say. I'm coming in on April 1st. "Doesn't matter. Are you coming in or inquiring. "I'd like to know the rate". Hung up on me. If this is how terrible their service is wouldn't be worth it at any price. Good riddance!

Michael M.

Yelp
Great staff. Good location. Vintage hotel for sure . Definitely shows it's age. You get what you pay for.

Yelp
DO NOT STAY HERE FOR ANY PRICE! YOU COULDN'T PAY ME TO STAY HERE!! This place was BY FAR the worst hotel I've ever seen. I had stayed here once before in 2021, when it was under different ownership. It was a cool, old, funky place with cats roaming the property. What I encountered last Friday, was frightening. The ad stayed the following: 1) Elevators - they don't exist in this property, and there is no one to help with bags. I even asked and was refused. 2) parking - I was told to park at post office a block away, and roll 4 bags down a dark alley alone after dark to get back to hotel. 3) wifi included - they charged me an additional $206 for 1 week of wifi upon arrival. WIFI NEVER WORKED EVEN AFTER PAYING TWICE There is no maid service. If you need soap or towels or shampoo, you have to go to front desk and pay extra There was a back door that wouldn't close properly, that went to an ally There are ants everywhere I heard 5 other people complain as I stood in line to cancel the rest of my reservation Jason told me to come back the next morning, and he would refund the rest of my trip. When I went back to the next morning, I was told that Jason would not be at work that day and then a manager was not on property or available to speak with for three more days. BIGGEST SCAM EVER!!!

Yelp
I had a good time and everything one needs is very close or at least within a mile. Pick up some groceries at Foodland - 1.2 miles or Don Quijote - 1.1 miles and make your breakfast and snacks. 24 hour fitness is exactly a mile away. A nice and quiet pool area where one can relax unlike the big hotels with very crowded pool areas and ridiculous resort and other fees. Who cares if the rooms are a little dated. Your only sleeping there and taking care of other personal business and not really hanging out all day. The staff is super friendly and I will go back again for sure because of the Aloha vibe. And, the onsite Wasabi Bistro has some of the best Sushi I've ever eaten - period!
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly, helpful staff. Comfortable Hawaiian style rooms and suites. It is a "local oasis" in Waikiki's sea of high rise hotels. Classic Hawaii. Don't miss Japanese restaurant in corner "Wasabi Bistro". Be sure to make a reservation as they fill up fast. Great food, sushi, fish, specialty dishes, wine and sake. Also a "find." Close to shopping, restaurants, beaches, activities. All worth it.

Yelp
Cute old time hotel. The staff treats you like family - they know your name- none of the big impersonal feeling you get from the bigger hotels. They have 2 sweet kitties who the guests can take for a walk Onsite Japanese restaurant is pretty good. Only downside is that parking is tight, although you can park at the nearby post office after hours for $5. Walking distance to the beach and the promenade. My pick for a Waikiki hotel anytime!

Yelp
This is one of those few places I am both loathe and giddy to share. What a gem! I noticed this place many years ago, on my first trip to HI, on my first walk to the beach and was intrigued by how charming and cloistered it looked. And on my second visit I stayed there for 10 days. Many have already described the decor, and yes, it is right out of the 60s and is a little tired and worn, but spotless and has everything you need. I was vacationing alone and could not have chosen a better atmosphere. The staff is amazing, they are considerate and make this hotel a wonderful little community. It is quiet and private and comfortable. The location is in the middle of the "action" but secluded from it. Everything in Waikiki is within easy walking distance including shopping, great restaurants and the beach. If I am fortunate to visit Oahu again this is the only place I'll stay.

Yelp
This is a 1 star hotel. If you like mould, dark and aged decor delivered by women who couldn't care less then this is the place for you. We booked 3 months ahead, the room we were given had peeling wallpaper, mould and the room was at best aged 70's . The wifi doesn't work in the room we were given and I was told most people are happy to go to the desk to get good wifi. I explained the room was in very poor condition (care factor zero) we were offered a pool room at $20 extra., which now is the same price as the Hilton hotel with ocean views and much nicer experience I have stayed there before and never will again and I would suggest you shop around. It's more like an over priced backpacker hostel.

Yelp
This hotel is a joke, they are so rude and there is mold everywhere in my upgraded room that they charged me for the same rate as a real hotel, they should be out of business the scum bags I want my money back you thieves! I see when someone puts a bad review on they cheat and lie to do a good one, stay here at your own risk!

Yelp
My wife and I have stayed here 3 times, first time in 2003 and last in 2011. We have found it delightful every time. If you are one who likes a garden lobby with a cascading waterfall then this is not for you. If you love a real place to stay, clean and comfy with charm and friendly staff then this IS for you. I hope I haven't oversold this place because we plan to return next year

Mark F.

Yelp
Inexpensive hotel in a pretty good location. Just watch out for who you deal with at the front desk. The japanese ladies who work there are super nice and just what you'd hope for in hotel staff. But the white guy in his 50's or 60's was a total jerk to my girlfriend when she went up to ask for directions to *their own* parking lot. Completely ruined our experience. The rooms are not fancy, and the hotel's clientele is primarily retired folks (corroborated by a travel info sheet I got). Overall this place would have gotten 4 stars if it weren't for the guy at the front desk. After I asked him to apologize for being such an a** to my very polite 5'2" girlfriend, he was even ruder as if he owned the place and couldn't care less about his own customers.

Yelp
Have stayed several times over the last ten years, generally a good experience. Not this time. Truly, almost twice as expensive as several very nice high-rise hotels, absolutely terrible room. Badly worn out appliances, a/c noisy to the point it bothered the neighbors, no real response from the front desk, feeling stupid and ripped off for not leaving. My wife didn't want the hassle of moving or we would have been gone after the second night. Never again and that's kind of sad. Took the fun out of our vacation. Shame on us.

Yelp
Excellent location & great atmosphere. Employees are super friendly & pleasant. Court yard is lovely & rooms are comfortable. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I have now stayed here twice while on vacation with my family and will come back to stay here next time I am in Waikiki. The hotel is refreshingly old fashioned, but very clean and well run. It's a great place for families and in a great location, walking distance from beach access. What stood out to me the most was how friendly and accommodating the staff is. They recognize you as you come in and out of the hotel and they accommodated my last minute request for late checkout when my flight was delayed. Very great service, highly recommended!

Yelp
If you like locally owned, small hotels, this is definitely the place for you. It was absolutely charming, staff was wonderful, the rooms are classic, especially the fact that they totally open up (front and back) to allow you to cool the room with just breeze all night long. Clean and unique, we really enjoyed our time here. Also right in the heart of Waikiki and a short walk to the beach, so everything you want to do is right there. Even the restaurant housed within the Breakers delivers high quality, delicious Japanese cuisine.

Yelp
Slightly rustic and nothing fancy but it is a nice Clean hotel with affordable price. Pool in the hotel. Close to beaches, Waikiki. The service is friendly and responsive. After I came back from my vacation, they even sent me Xmas Card. Would recommend this to anyone.

Yelp
I haven't been to this hotel exactly but the guy at the front desk is rude! He said that he can't give me the wi-fi password because I wasn't staying at the hotel! I needed wi-fi that minute but they said NO!

Yelp
Fantastic place! The staff is among the best I've ever encountered. Make you feel like family. Close walk to Waikiki Beach, and all the shopping and restaurants on Kalakaua Ave. Had a room with a balcony, and a short walk to Eggs & Things - great breakfast place. I cannot recommend this place enough.

Yelp
This place is just wonderful. Feels like a private resort without the price tag. Very personalized service. I'm not an "old-timer" loyalist--I only began staying here last summer while here on business, and am on my third visit. I am sick to death of chain hotels, and the large hotels in Honolulu are especially disappointing, with their masses of humanity gasping for anything free they can get their hands on, e.g., the icky white-bread-type food at a club lounge. This place is absolutely charming with a friendly staff that knows who you are. Nice and quiet, no packed pool area with thumping music, an adorable outdoor lobby, with a resident cat or two for those who are missing theirs. Not for you if you are a high-maintenance, must-have-room-service-and-every-amenity type. But if you have some soul and can appreciate an old-school retro place (original retro, not paste-on), this is wonderful. Old Honolulu accommodations that feel like home.

Patricia E.

Yelp
If you are comfortable at a Motel 6, only a slightly shabbier motel, this is the place for you. It was hit-or-miss with the office staff. Some folks semi-friendly and others bordering on rude. Our upstairs room, located behind the courtyard, was impressively noisy. The very loud traffic on the road behind our room was constant, starting around six in the morning. It has been quite awhile since I operated a manual tv (small - no remote), but memory served me well. Everything in the room was badly worn, but the worst was the old cracked skink faucet in the bathroom. Really yucky. There is a loyal following for The Breakers, older folks who seem to return annually so getting a prime time reservation is not likely. Those folks obviously like it quite well. The location is great and sitting around the pool in the courtyard in a two story facility rather than a multi-story high rise, both provide me an opportunity to relay some good things to say about The Breakers. Oh, Wi-Fi available free in the courtyard.

Jonathan T.

Yelp
Small friendly hotel which is rare in Honolulu due to the high cost of real estate and property taxes. If you want a little of old Hawaii, this is the place to stay. Parking is limited due to small parking lot, but do you really need a car on Oahu with "The Bus" that goes all over the island with even a four day pass or a monthly pass that tourist can buy. Close to the beach and the new BeachWalk complex as well as the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. Go out the back of the hotel and across the street to Fort DeRussy with open space to walk around and enjoy the scenery and also the post office too. What more can you ask for?

Fran R.

Yelp
Cute little motel in a convenient location. We had room 131. The slider door does not work so we could not access the lanai. Bummer. Had to use the air conditioner all night, so we alternated from freezing to being too hot, then back again all night. Woke up at 6 a.m. to the sound of lots of glass being emptied out of something. Recycling bins being emptied? One lousy wake up call. Not happy. No hair shampoo of any kind. Had go out and buy some. At the price you would think they'd provide one of those little bottles. If I had to stay here again, I'd only take a poolside room. Forget taking the cheaper ones. Don't know if I'd book here again. Maybe, maybe not.
