The Brisley Bell, Brisley, near Dereham, Norfolk - Explore & Book

"The Bell might just have cracked the seemingly impossible: a village pub where everyone feels happy to hang out whether for a relaxed drink, a good meal or a spoiling night’s stay. And it's all wrapped up in stylishly quirky good looks that feel entirely at home in their surrounds.Marcus Seaman and Amelia Nicholson returned to their Norfolk roots to rescue the near-derelict drinking haunt of their youth and turn the handsome brick-and-flint Georgian building into a polished yet relaxed 21st-century version of a coaching inn. Stripped-wood and stone-flagged floors, exposed brick walls and inglenook fireplaces, comfortable leather chairs and scrubbed tables give the feel of a country inn; candelabras, velvet curtains, deep-hued walls and potted plants give an understated elegance. Bedrooms – astonishingly created out of livestock sheds – are similarly stylishly rustic, with antiques jostling modern art and bold colours. Linger over drinks in the snug or jolly bar – with its vast polished-copper bar-top – or under the pergola in the garden while planning tomorrow’s day-trip: perhaps coastal walks, seal-spotting trips or seaside-y Cromer. Then fuel up on punchy, fuss-free, rather good food with a focus on great quality and locally sourced meat and fish. Highs Bold and individual bedrooms with a well-judged, uncluttered mix of antiques and re-purposed pieces, plus spoiling bathroomsImaginative planting, a covered patio – with vine-wrapped tree – and pretty pergola make for a restful and scenic gardenGenuinely warm and inviting welcome, with a real sense of being a temporary part of the local sceneVariety of places to drink and eat including a cosy snug, lively fire-warmed bar and elegant garden room Lows It’s Norfolk, so the surrounds are rather flatIt is a popular eating and drinking destination amongst locals, so can be lively, especially at weekendsNo (quiet) sitting-room apart from a couple of fireside sofas in the snug and barNote that there's a reduced food offering on Mondays & Tuesdays" - Helen Pickles

Went for a midweek lunch recently and got a lovely table next to the windows looking out onto some of the gardens. Menu was varied and the food was served on time and generous portions. Some choices were better than others - the oxtail starters were excellent, as was the salmon en croute main, but the traditional scampi main wasn't anything special. Great ambience and surroundings, I think I'd want to return and try the dinner menu next time as friends have raved about it.

Plenty of parking outside and a lovely setting.Had a drink at the bar and looked at the menu before going to our table.Lovely interior and nice atmosphere.Staff very friendly and efficient nothing was too much trouble.I had melon and feta cheese with salad for a starter and then from the specials had venison. The presentation of the food was very good and the venison for me was flawless. Would highly recommend and will definitely return.

We went for Steak night tonight. I had been before, for their normal menu, but my husband had not. Frankly, I was shocked at the standard of the food and the total lack of choice. There was a standard sharing starter that everyone had to have, none of which we would have chosen. Hummus and bread, meatballs in tomato sauce, and whitebait with tartare sauce. The whitebait was yummy, the hummus, though, was very lumpy and lacked flavour and the meatballs, were just meatballs. We both then opted for the sirloin steak. There were 3 types of beefsteak, a pork loin steak, a fish and a vegitarian option. The steak itself was good and well cooked, although 10oz it too big for me. It came with fries that obviously came out of a bag and were mediocre, half a tomato, and a mushroom, neither of which were cooked or seasoned well. We were so disapointed with the first two courses that we opted for no dessert, even though we both have a sweet tooth. So this with 2 glasses of wine and one beer came to £95. Way over priced for what we had. He refuses to go back again, even though I know the food has been good in the past. Award winning? Not tonight! The service was great.

We recently hosted our wedding at the Bell for 65 guests and could not recommend this pub more for weddings; a delicious meal; a luxury overnight stay; or, a chilled drink in their beautiful garden. The whole experience, from arriving in our luxurious rooms on the Friday night, to our relaxed and easy checkout on the Sunday morning, was simply outstanding. The staff, the beauty of the pub and its extraordinary gardens allowed us to have the most perfect wedding! To all of the staff, a huge thank you! We received so many compliments about how helpful, intuitive and available the staff were - there was not a single point throughout the whole weekend where we needed to “go and find someone”. There was always someone close to hand, with a smile on their face, ready to help. The team ensured that everything ran like clockwork. The food was incredible and our guests are in still in raptures about how delicious and beautifully presented it was. We are incredibly grateful to Herve for delivering our “posh BBQ” (lobster Salad and flat iron steak and ribs) to the highest possible standard and already cannot wait to taste his food again. He absolutely blew our (and our guests') socks off with the quality of his food. If you are considering hosting a wedding in Norfolk and are looking for a relaxed and informal day without compromising on quality or ‘wow-factor’, look no further than the Bell. Laura and her team delivered the wedding of our dreams. Not a single thing went wrong and it felt like we were floating on a cloud the entire day which is a testament to the meticulously planning, eye for detail and incredible management by the Bell team.

We were taken|| by friends for a birthday lunch and, really just expecting a standard pub meal, were very positively surprised by everything about the Brisley Bell.|The interior of the pub is charming ( I can imagine it must be fantastic with a roaring fire in the winter). Service was good and the food exceptional - the crayfish starter delicious and the lamb main was melt in the mouth. Sadly no room left for dessert but they looked lovely. We will definitely go again despite the forty mile round trip from home.

We visited here for a meal whilst on holiday but met up with my brother and sister in law from Norwich. It was Tuesday and steak night. Great choices of different steaks. We had the rib eye, rump and flat iron all the steaks were great quality and cooked exact to what we asked for. Peppercorn sauce was lovely. Puddings were great too. Sticky toffee pudding, rhubarb brioche and cheesecake. Service was fantastic, waitress was lovely and attentive. Really enjoyed our meal.

Fabulous roast beef!! What a treat lay on store at this wonderful hostelry. Super Sunday lunch in traditional village pub surroundings and a warm welcome from the friendly staff. Will visit again.

The Brisley Bell is better in real life than the pictures. The rooms and gardens are perfect and unexpected. Breakfast is amazing a huge choice for both continental and cooked. Unfortunately we cannot comment on dinner as our stay was on a Monday but from what we experienced the quality would be amazing. We attended a wedding on the Tuesday (the reason for not eating at the Bell) but when we returned, the car park was full, there was a steak night. One other precious moment was meeting Nala and Kinky. 2 fab black Labradors, which is a must for dog lovers. We hope to return with our little four legged fur baby. Can't recommend enough.

Yelp
Fantastic food and service. Staff welcoming and a great pub atmosphere, a rarity now most pubs are basically restaurants. It's obviously popular and I'm not surprised we had a good time catching up with friends over lunch, then hung out by the fire whilst making good use of their bar. I imagine it would be great in the summer too with such a fantastic beer garden.

Yelp
This was a traditional Norfolk country pub which closed in the early eighties and was reopened and refurbished in the early nineties. The building has its origins in the 16th century and according to local repute, William Tyndale (he of Bible translation fame) lived there for a while. The pub is a nice comfortable village pub with excellent beer and food from bar snacks to a full restaurant menu. It also offers bed and breakfast and Brisley is centrally located in Norfolk making it an ideal base from which to explore the county.
