"The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway offers a unique experience through Colorado's fall foliage. As one of only two cog railways in the U.S., it climbs more than 14,000 feet, providing extreme traction with its cog mechanism. The nine-mile journey traverses the scenic Pike National Forest, known for its golden yellow and red hues from the Rocky Mountain maples and Aspens, against the backdrop of ancient bristlecone pine trees. The ride also offers wildlife sightings, including elk, deer, and bighorn sheep. At the summit, a new visitor center provides insights into the mountain and railway history. Tickets start at $59 for adults, available at cograilway.com." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is the world’s highest and longest cog railroad. Since 1891, this train has carried travelers to the summit of Pikes Peak while highlighting the changing leaves and gorgeous scenery below. The three-hour round-trip journey culminates at the 14,115-foot peak of “America's Mountain.” At the top, stop at the Pikes Peak Summit House to grab one of its famously fresh doughnuts and admire the sweeping 360-degree views." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"First installed in 1891 by Simmons Beautyrest mattress inventor Zalmon Simmons, this historic attraction that climbs to 14,115 feet (the highest railway in the country) was shuttered in 2017 following an infrastructure evaluation. After $100 million and three years of renovation, it has now reopened. The main depot retains its original 19th-century mining town aesthetic with a fresh coat of bright blue paint, but a second train platform, an overhead walkway, and remodeled bathrooms and gift shop are now part of the depot, too. Tracks were relaid, and the ride now features a single steel cog rail, with refurbished trains offering upholstered, cushioned seating. The 70-minute-ish journey into Pike National Forest and up to the summit is full of sights, from giant eons-old quartz boulders to canopies of trees and meandering waterfalls. A round-trip ticket costs $58 with a $10 upcharge for seat selection, offering 360-degree views at the summit including the Garden of the Gods, Cripple Creek, the continental divide, and the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. The new visitor center should open June 2021."

Riding the Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak was breathtaking. Literally. My family of 4 enjoyed this ride! We booked the 2 seat side which was great but we would have loved the views more from the 3 seat side. Now I know for next time! The ride up was enjoyable & we enjoyed listening to all the fun facts & history on the way up! We almost got 1 of everything at the visitors center & Sat down & ate quickly. Walked even quicker through the gift shop as it was slightly pricy & enjoyed the rest of the time outside taking in the incredible views! This was truly a unique experience & would 100% recommend it for any age! We chose as early ride & enjoyed Manitou Springs the rest of the day!

Awesome experience, the train is comfortable and our tour guide was great, and some tour guides can be uncomfortable but she was great. The views are something else and 14000 feet is a real height, I recommend sitting on the two chair side, I got to sit both sides and that was the best in my opinion. We saw lots of marmots. It is definitely harder to breathe up there so be mindful. I really recommend doing this because it is a great price for the experience.

Awesome ~3 hour train ride and stop at the top to see the sights of Pike's Peak! You park across the street for $20 or along the road if you arrive early for a little cheaper and head to the station where they have bathrooms and tons of souvenirs for sale. They have assigned seats on your ticket and I recommend sitting on the left side if you can. The trip up the mountain is a little over an hour or so and you get a lot of views along the way as well as history. Our guide, Elvis, was almost brand new but very knowledgeable and walked around to talk to individuals and groups and answer questions. No one had any issues with altitude sickness so don't let the signs scare you. Along the ride you'll see waterfalls, animals, and old settlements while you learn about the history of the mountain and railway. We saw a few wolves (pics attached) as well as what we think were Arctic Ravens (also attached). At the top you'll be treated to unparalleled views and a welcome center famous for donuts. Walk around and take pics from all the lookout platforms first while it's not busy, then head inside for food. I got the donuts (they were alright) and coffee and finished a friend's cheeseburger. The gift shop has the usual souvenirs for people back home - my wife got a stuffed donut. Use the bathroom at the train station and then again at the top of the mountain because the train doesn't have one.

We did this on Father’s Day, it was packed but still really fun. They don’t offer a military discount. Seats are small, so if you are not, you are going to be uncomfortable. Up top, except to pay A LOT to buy souvenirs. It was very well organized, both getting on and reboarding. I was worried about experiencing terrifying heights going up and back down, but a lot of the ride was in forest, I wasn’t scared one bit. It was definitely a fun experience!

I LOVE doing this trip! The front 3 seats are worth the extra money because of the front-facing view all the way up the mountain. You will often see wildlife, and the views are incredible. The Engineer’s interactive quality depends on who you get - luck of the draw. I have had very informative and friendly, all the way to not talkative. So I would just expect to get most of your info answered by the Host/MC. It is about a 1 hour ride up, 1 hour at the top, and 1 hour ride down. You want the earliest departure time - you’ll have the best chance of good weather and visibility on Pike’s Peak that time of day.

We have traveled up to the Pikes Peak Summit four times in 20 years. Three times on the Cog and one drive. We were married at the summit in 2005 and have tried to return every 5 years. We were thrilled to have another great experience two weeks ago! The “new” cog ride was great! Beautiful views and a great Cog guide. Making advance reservations for 9 family members was seamless. No issues and boarding was a breeze. The only small issue was that we had 2 little grandkids which can always take more time…. We knew we had 40 minutes but time got away and we had to run for the Cog ride down! I didn’t even get a picturesque view or picture! Oops.

This is an excellent way to get up and down the mountain. The train was so much fun - the conductor tells you all sorts of info on the trip. One hour up and back and then we had about 45 minutes at the peak. I'm sure others could use more time up there, but we were happy to save our vehicles brakes! Wonderful bathrooms at the depot AND at the peak! I was shocked by how nice the visitor's center at the top was!

My family of 4 made it to the top! This was a challenging & rewarding hike. It took us 2 hours & another 90 minutes to come back down (the correct way, using Barr trail). It's supposed to be a one way hike, but several crazies were running back down the steps so it was scary at times, not knowing if you'd be knocked over by someone coming down the wrong way. Also, we understood online that you have to book a free ticket online in advance, which we did, but learned that nobody checks tickets or is around to look at a reservation. So, go whenever you want! We wouldn't have waited until 10:30am had we known this. Parking at Hiawatha gardens was easy. It's about $2/hour. Lady in parking lot recommended reserving 5 hours, that was plenty of time. Shuttle has AC & was clean.
