Our family stayed at this lovely property for 4 nights, starting on Valentine's weekend. The Buccaneer is not your run-of-the-mill property that one is accustomed to if you only stay at hotel families like Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, etc. Instead, The Buccaneer is a charming, expansive property with various types of accommodations ranging from Ocean Front Rooms, Family Cottages, rooms and suites in the Great House (where you check in), and more.
Our check in process was smooth. When we entered the Great House, we saw hand sanitizer dispensers and signs on the floor indicating where to stand and wait, socially distanced. The gentleman who checked us in was very professional and we were also greeted by Nadia, the Director of Front Office. The whole check in process went smoothly and we were offered complimentary rum punch while we wait for another representative of the hotel to get freed up, to lead us to our room down the hill.
We stayed in an Ocean Front Room on the western side of the property and it offered up close views of the ocean, was very close to the pool, and is a bit more secluded location than other room types (which meant a lower chance of encountering other guests). The room itself represented the island vibe very well. I would add that the room did feel "lived in" - it was not shiny or updated recently - but we took that in stride. The room also had a door that opened to our own veranda which had two lounge chairs.
Our beds were super comfortable, and the A/C kept us adequately cool during our stay. The room was spacious enough for the 3 of us and had a couple of small tables at which we could work, read, check emails, etc. There was also more seating/lounging at the window. The room also had a mini fridge and coffee bar area along with a jug filled with water and ice cubes in a bucket. There was no microwave in the room. The bathroom contained all the standard items (lotion, shampoo, soap, etc.) and featured dual sinks and a spacious countertop area on which we all could easily keep our toiletries without crowding.
Included in our stay was a daily breakfast buffet at The Terrace Restaurant (located in the Great House). It features a buffet (the staff serve you) as well as eggs you can have made to order. Along with the buffet, they also brought out cut mixed fruits and juices of our choice along with the standard water and coffee. The breakfast buffet featured many of the same items each day - danishes, muffins, eggs with and without cheese, sausage, bacon, French toast, pancakes, & home fries - plus some daily specials. During our stay, daily specials included salt fish, johnny cakes, breakfast burritos, and biscuits & gravy. While the breakfast was complimentary, tipping was encouraged, and we gladly did. All the servers were very nice, and some made extra small talk or cracked a funny line or two. While I wouldn't call the breakfast "gourmet", it was satisfying and certainly fueled us up each day before we headed out.
The only other dining facility that was open during our stay was the Mermaid Restaurant. The food there was pretty good and, again, the staffers were super friendly. We only had 2 dinners at the Mermaid as we opted to dine out for lunches and some dinners.
The pool area by our room was not as large as you may expect at some other properties but there was never a glut of people and we swam at times when no one else was in the water (even when there were a few folks lounging nearby). There is a towel bar area to grab more towels from. While not large, the pool area was well maintained, attractive, and comfortable. The pool does have a true deep end and there was no lifeguard on duty (which we knew would be the case).
Beauregard's on the Beach (an outdoor bar) is also just steps from the pool, and it was open our first few days on the property. I believe they said it's open Friday thru Sunday and it was a great spot to grab a refreshing drink, hang out in the shade, and catch the nice ocean breeze and views. The bartender was super nice and mixed great drinks each time. They do offer light fare you can nosh on but those are lunch items from The Mermaid's menu. Still, if you don't want to trek over to Mermaid and/or want a different scene, Beauregard's is a great option when it's open.
Though some of the restaurants are closed at this time, we didn't have any complaints - again, since we intended to (and did) go offsite to dine at local restaurants.
Nadia and her team as well as all the staff we encountered were supremely friendly, helpful, and accommodating, The concierge was very helpful in securing us dinner reservations on site when we opted to dine there as well as making several useful recommendations of where to dine offsite.
All in all, this was a wonderful getaway at a unique, friendly, comfortable property. Should we return to St. Croix, we won't hesitate to return to The Buccaneer!
