How to Take a Caribbean Vacation — While Acknowledging Its Painful Past

"A historic hotel on St. Croix, originally a sugar and cotton plantation known as Estate Shoys, with ties to the island's colonial past." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"The Buccaneer has a long history. The colonial great house was built by Maltese knight Charles Martel in 1653. Locatedon aprotected bluff, the house later became the home of Danish governor von Prock after Denmark’s 1733 purchase of the Virgin Islands. Fast-forward to1947, when the Armstrong familytransformedwhat was by then acattle estate intothe Buccaneer, St. Croix’s first family-run hotel. The resort, completely modern and still quite popular, operatesthe Buccaneer Golf Club, celebrated for its par 70 course that offers Caribbean views from 13 of its 18 holes."

The Buccaneer, St. Croix, USVI - Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Though the Buccaneer, on the U.S. Virgin Island of St. Croix, has been proudly run by the Armstrong family for over 70 years—it's the longest-running resort in the Caribbean—its history dates even further back to the property's earliest construction by a Knight of Malta in 1653. Since then, it's been a private home; a sugar mill; a cotton estate, then a cattle estate; and now, an incredibly warm, family-friendly resort that's more like a country club. You have access to an 18-hole golf course, eight tennis courts, three beaches (whether you prefer kayaking and snorkeling or lounging in peace and quiet), a full water sports center, and none of the pretense. Arrive for lunch at the Grotto in your bathing suit, and please don't sleep through the terrific breakfast buffet. The Buccanneer knows how to put out a spread. Once you're done moving about for the day, settle into the deluxe oceanfront room—the resort's most popular—and lie on your bed beneath the 16-foot-high wood ceilings, watching the waves lap the beach out your picture window." - Laura Dannen Redman

We spent a few days here for our anniversary. The property is lovely and the staff is wonderful. The beaches were relatively quiet. We did not rent a car so we had to take several taxis which require cash. It would have been nice to have an atm on site. The drivers Victor and Claude were the best! Overall, the place is awesome. There are a few small upgrades our room could have used. Food and drinks are pricey and typical resort food. The food wouldn’t be too bad if they lowered the price. That said, we wouldn’t hesitate to come back. Thanks for a great time!

This resort is TOP NOTCH. The arrival experience, the service during the stay, and all of the staff. The food at the beach BBQ was wonderful. We found the grotto pool to be very enjoyable, and the wait staff at the grotto was particularly attentive, coming around frequently. Food, drink, towels, the staff at the grotto provided it all. The shuttle service was quick, efficient and the drivers were very friendly. I want to particularly mention Glen the bartender and Heather at the beach, they demonstrated the attentiveness I would hope to have. I don't write many reviews, but the Buccaneer rated a review. I will definitely be back! An awesome place to visit, and relax!

We spent an evening having dinner at the Terrace restaurant. The service is excellent, and the views are gorgeous. The building is on top of a hill, overlooking the Caribbean Sea.|The food was very good. Great wine and drink selections with a full bar. There was also live music on weekends. |We had chicken lollipops, and excellent apple pecan salad and an outstanding seafood pasta.|It's very romantic and I would highly recommend.

Amazing place to stay. Went to St Croix for our 20th anniversary & were booked at another resort (a disaster and a dump- don’t stay at the Carambola) We called from that resort & the Buccaneer staff went above & beyond to get us a wonderful room and even upgraded us to the honeymoon suite. The owner gave us a sweet note and bottle of champagne. That level of service was exhibited by everyone on staff. They took what was going to be a disaster and turned it into a memorable, romantic getaway. Gorgeous property, wonderful amenities & friendly courteous staff. We would definitely return.

This is not only one of the most Beautiful resorts but it is the Best Service we've experienced! Everyone - front desk, concierge, wait staff, beach attendants, house keeping - is top notch! We're pretty sure housekeeping is Ninja trained! 😀 We would be out of the room for a few minutes and on returning find the bed made, floor cleaned and fresh towels - often twice a day! Wow! Everyone we spoke with was super kind and helpful - they even put together a box breakfast so I could go fishing early in the morning before the restaurant opened - thanks Phyllis! And the concierge later arranged to have the fish cooked for dinner - thanks Leah! We can't wait to return to the Buccaneer Resort!

The staff was some of the friendliest people we have ever encountered! From the front desk to the beach staff. Always smiling. Always willing to help in any way. Rooms were spacious and clean. The beach was relaxing and never had an issue getting chairs.

We just returned from a heavenly Christmas vacation at The Buccaneer. I don't even know where to begin, and I hope I don't leave anything out. We booked a whole package through them, including airfare for two adults and two young children. The booking process was effortless, and flying Delta was great. No issues departing or returning. ||Arriving at the property, we were greeted by warm, welcoming, helpful, informative, and kind staff. Everyone there was just delightful to work with. We reserved a family cottage, and it was newly renovated and beautiful! It was as clean as you can imagine a family cottage on the beach to be (I mean, there were bits of sand and whatnot here and there, but what can you expect?). There was a beautiful gift basket waiting for us in our room with delicious brie, crackers, fruit, etc. ||The Mermaid Beach right outside our cottage was perfect. The water is warm and clear, the sand is soft and perfect for kids to play in all day. We spent the majority of our time here. The Mermaid offers a full-service bar and food at the beach, and everything we ordered was delicious. Brenda and Mayra were lovely, and Heather was on top of our kid's needs. She got us snorkeling gear (a must IMO!), life jackets for our kids, floaties, etc. We ate at all three restaurants, and prefer The Terrace and The Mermaid. The complimentary breakfast buffet was top-tier. Every food and beverage item we had was delicious.||The property is breathtaking. Sweeping views of the sea and rolling green mountains. We loved exploring. There is a rec area right by Mermaid Beach with tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer, giant chess, Connect 4, etc. ||On Christmas Eve, Santa visited the Terrace and brought all the kids gifts. Then, on Christmas morning, they came by the room with personalized gifts for the kids again. Nothing was overlooked. I had a massage at the spa (wish I could remember her name, she was delightful!). ||Overall, this was the best vacation and Christmas my family has ever had, and we cannot wait to return. This property is everything you could ask for from a 4-star hotel. We met some other friendly families, one of whom shared she had visited there regularly as a child and now brings her family there. She mentioned she recognizes other families from her childhood visits, which I think says a lot about the family vibe of the Buccaneer. ||Special thanks to Alberga, Mayra, Brenda, Heather, Leah, Frances, Fitzgerald, and everyone else whose name I can't recall at the moment. You make the magic of the Buccaneer, and we truly appreciate all your efforts to make beautiful memories for families. Thank you!!!

Yelp
Stayed at this resort for my mother in laws birthday. Here is the good and bad of our stay and experiences. THE GOOD Beaches are clean and nice. Pools are clean and water is warm. Rooms are spacious and bathrooms are huge. Continental breakfast was great. Landscaping is well kept. Dinner at The Terrace was good and portions were big. Food was cooked very well. THE BAD Mermaid restaurant was awful. Food was overcooked and unseasoned. This was for all four of our dishes. 20% gratuity is added to everything. Including if you order a single cocktail at the bar. I always tip, but let me choose the amount. The restaurants will close and no one will call you to tell you if you have reservations so you can change plans. The property is dated. Especially for what they charge. Limited beach swimming area due to reefs. Seating at pool is limited. This did not affect us because we were there during the off season but if you are here when it is busy you better get a chair early. Check in and out took forever. In a world where most hotels can get you checked in in less than 5 minutes and where you do not need to actually go to the front desk to check out, the Buccaneer is severely slacking in this area. The room air conditioner was loud. STAFF The staff I am rating separately and is the reason for my 3 stars. We came into contact with very few staff that were pleasant. Most of them had an attitude and could really benefit from some customer service training. When someone is rude to you it really puts a damper on your mood and that should never happen at a resort like this. They failed this category IMO.

Yelp
This is, without question, my favorite place to stay on the island. You're looking at around $45 in taxi fare to get to the resort from the airport. Once you arrive you will find everyone you're hoping to discover on your vacation. Friendly staff that are happy to bring you a rum punch while you're checking in, breathtaking views from The Terrace, perfectly kept grounds, and clean spacious rooms...many right on the beach. The Mermaid grill is ideal for grabbing a quick drink or a burger while you're soaking up the waves and savoring the crystal blue waters. The Buccaneer checks all the boxes for me and has absolutely become my home away from home in the Caribbean.

Yelp
Beautiful family run property w huge property containing a golf course, tennis courts, running path and 2 beaches. Lots of different accommodations to choose from and buffet breakfast is included. We rented a car and visited different beaches but we loved mermaid beach for the calm waters, restaurant, activities like volleyball/soccer/chess/corn husk and clean bathrooms.

Yelp
Beautiful hotel in Christiansted on 2 separate beaches & complimentary breakfast.. Plenty of parking & only minutes from downtown Christiansted..Very friendly staff

Yelp
Not our first time here and we couldn't wait to come back. Now I'm wondering why. It's all a mixed bag this time. The food in the main restaurant is mixed: the entrees we had were fantastic. The $20 bruschetta was insulting in quality, presentation, and price. The beach this morning was beautiful and worth all of the travel time. After lunch it seems a local group or large family is having their outing on the beach so gone is the quiet, peaceful atmosphere we travelled so long to enjoy. After reading other reviews I've learned that the beach is indeed open to the public, so that just adds insult to those of us spending $800+ per night, because most of the value to me was the setting and atmosphere. What a shame that a beautiful st Croix beach is embracing the crowded Jersey beach vibe. Some of the staff are really nice. Some... The cottage or whatever this is properly called is ok. As others mentioned it's dated but comfortable. Room service for clean linens and towels would be nice at this price, and so would a working drain in the tub, but maybe I need to reset my expectations. Or go elsewhere next time.

Yelp
Beautiful resort. The room was top notch and ocean front. The resort restaurants are all nicely located with good to excellent food. Service was excellent throughout the resort.

Yelp
The Hotel is very nice and the beaches in Saint Croix are all public access. I have a second home on Saint Croix, love the island, and used to enjoy going to the beach at the Buccaneer Hotel and I thought that renting lounge chairs on the beach for $10 each was a fair trade. Last month I took myself, my wife, and two close friends there to rent chairs, have lunch and drinks, and sit on the beach and rent lounges, and enjoy pina coladas in our rented lounge chairs. For years we've been playing golf, and having lunch and dinners and supporting the Buccaneer Hotel. I couldn't have been more disappointed when the beach attendant asked for an exorbitant $35 per lounge chair for four adults! I wrote the hotel and they said they would discuss the issue and I never heard back; and I'm now disinclined to ever go back. That day the hotel lost lunch for four, plus drinks on the beach over a $35 per lounge chair fee or a ridiculous $140 for four. Had the fee remained the same, at $10 each, they could have enjoyed a few more hundred dollars from our lunch and beach drinks. Very Disappointing and a silly business decision.

Yelp
Our family stayed at this lovely property for 4 nights, starting on Valentine's weekend. The Buccaneer is not your run-of-the-mill property that one is accustomed to if you only stay at hotel families like Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, etc. Instead, The Buccaneer is a charming, expansive property with various types of accommodations ranging from Ocean Front Rooms, Family Cottages, rooms and suites in the Great House (where you check in), and more. Our check in process was smooth. When we entered the Great House, we saw hand sanitizer dispensers and signs on the floor indicating where to stand and wait, socially distanced. The gentleman who checked us in was very professional and we were also greeted by Nadia, the Director of Front Office. The whole check in process went smoothly and we were offered complimentary rum punch while we wait for another representative of the hotel to get freed up, to lead us to our room down the hill. We stayed in an Ocean Front Room on the western side of the property and it offered up close views of the ocean, was very close to the pool, and is a bit more secluded location than other room types (which meant a lower chance of encountering other guests). The room itself represented the island vibe very well. I would add that the room did feel "lived in" - it was not shiny or updated recently - but we took that in stride. The room also had a door that opened to our own veranda which had two lounge chairs. Our beds were super comfortable, and the A/C kept us adequately cool during our stay. The room was spacious enough for the 3 of us and had a couple of small tables at which we could work, read, check emails, etc. There was also more seating/lounging at the window. The room also had a mini fridge and coffee bar area along with a jug filled with water and ice cubes in a bucket. There was no microwave in the room. The bathroom contained all the standard items (lotion, shampoo, soap, etc.) and featured dual sinks and a spacious countertop area on which we all could easily keep our toiletries without crowding. Included in our stay was a daily breakfast buffet at The Terrace Restaurant (located in the Great House). It features a buffet (the staff serve you) as well as eggs you can have made to order. Along with the buffet, they also brought out cut mixed fruits and juices of our choice along with the standard water and coffee. The breakfast buffet featured many of the same items each day - danishes, muffins, eggs with and without cheese, sausage, bacon, French toast, pancakes, & home fries - plus some daily specials. During our stay, daily specials included salt fish, johnny cakes, breakfast burritos, and biscuits & gravy. While the breakfast was complimentary, tipping was encouraged, and we gladly did. All the servers were very nice, and some made extra small talk or cracked a funny line or two. While I wouldn't call the breakfast "gourmet", it was satisfying and certainly fueled us up each day before we headed out. The only other dining facility that was open during our stay was the Mermaid Restaurant. The food there was pretty good and, again, the staffers were super friendly. We only had 2 dinners at the Mermaid as we opted to dine out for lunches and some dinners. The pool area by our room was not as large as you may expect at some other properties but there was never a glut of people and we swam at times when no one else was in the water (even when there were a few folks lounging nearby). There is a towel bar area to grab more towels from. While not large, the pool area was well maintained, attractive, and comfortable. The pool does have a true deep end and there was no lifeguard on duty (which we knew would be the case). Beauregard's on the Beach (an outdoor bar) is also just steps from the pool, and it was open our first few days on the property. I believe they said it's open Friday thru Sunday and it was a great spot to grab a refreshing drink, hang out in the shade, and catch the nice ocean breeze and views. The bartender was super nice and mixed great drinks each time. They do offer light fare you can nosh on but those are lunch items from The Mermaid's menu. Still, if you don't want to trek over to Mermaid and/or want a different scene, Beauregard's is a great option when it's open. Though some of the restaurants are closed at this time, we didn't have any complaints - again, since we intended to (and did) go offsite to dine at local restaurants. Nadia and her team as well as all the staff we encountered were supremely friendly, helpful, and accommodating, The concierge was very helpful in securing us dinner reservations on site when we opted to dine there as well as making several useful recommendations of where to dine offsite. All in all, this was a wonderful getaway at a unique, friendly, comfortable property. Should we return to St. Croix, we won't hesitate to return to The Buccaneer!

Yelp
This was the best service I've ever had at a resort/hotel. The people were very caring and understanding of things and treated us very well. I went here for my senior trip with my parents and had a lovely time. Their beaches were very nice and the place was clean. The food was also delicious.

Yelp
Great resort! The private beaches are amazing, snorkeling on site, private pools and the breakfast was a highlight! Every person was pleasant and eager to assist. They helped with our luggage and assisted when we changed rooms. If you like tennis, the courts are in excellent condition.

Yelp
Stayed at the hotel for four days for a conference. Slept in beach room with an amazing view. Seems like bad reviews are for value or for beach access for non hotel guests. Quick helpful review below. Pros -great breakfast included in room charge -insane view of the water from our room -Amazing service: CJ at mermaid beach, Melrose, and Doris made the trip amazing with their great service and smiles. -Grounds are immaculate and clean -air conditioning in room worked amazingly well -no mildew smell in room -hot water was plentiful -Sunday brunch -the people are amazing! Cons -Food can take a while at the beach. It's worth it (mahi mahi bites yum) but expect a little wait -Room we stayed in was not as new as some other resorts in other island destinations, but they were tidy and AC works. And beach view was incredible Ask for a beach room if you want an awesome view or go for renovated if you want something newer. Melrose is amazing. He claps for you as you get breakfast and makes you realize you're lucky to just BE.

Yelp
Don't stay here if you wanna have any type of fun. Some of the workers are nice some are not. Food is good tho. It's just so boring bars close at 5 and there's nothing to do besides sit and stare

Yelp
My wife and I purchased the elopement package. I will recount our experience then add some tips to help maximize your stay if you're not planning on getting married and want to scroll to the end. I am giving our experience 4.5 stars with 1.5 stars being attributed solely to our wonderful wedding planners Erin Proctor and Olivia Leiti who really did their best to make sure we had a wonderful and memorable experience. The resort is beautiful, has great facilities, and is conveniently located near Christianstead, the home to many restaurants and embarkation point for tour boat trips to Buck Island and elsewhere. With that being said, there appeared to be some communication issues between the different "departments" of the hotel. Ill chalk this up to COVID as we were told there were large layoffs at the beginning of the pandemic and the resort was beginning to make more hires but was still short staffed during our stay. Nonetheless, as part of the elopement package you are supposed to be greeted in your room with Prosecco, flowers, a cheese, chocolate, and fruit plate, and other goodies. This didn't happen. We inquired about the goodies and found a basket in our room upon our return later in the afternoon, however it was a basket our friends had sent us. The concierge came the next day to apologize and explain there was some mix up. We never really got the full greeted in your room with Prosecco experience, but the resort made it up to us by giving us a free dinner at the Mermaid. As part of the Elopement package you get a free room upgrade. We booked the deluxe seaside rooms and were expecting to get upgraded to the luxury beachside dubloons. Instead, we were double upgraded to the Frigate Suite. While we were grateful for the double upgrade, the Frigate Suite didn't vibe for our occasion. With two bathrooms and a living room area overlooking a pool, we felt the Frigate Suite was best suited for a larger party with children, and we opted to move to the dubloons which proved to be more secluded, private, and romantic. The Mermaid was open for dinner, and has a beautiful view of the beach at sunset. But make sure you have a reservation, as plenty of people are turned away without one. If you're ordering to go, be prepared for a wait, as it can take more than an hour to get your food. The food was good, we never had anything we didn't like. The buffet on Saturday night was not worth $45 however, and I would recommend only eating there when they are offering an a la carte menu. Breakfast was also buffet but is included in your room rate and is served at the main building located up a substantial hill from the beachside rooms. The view is beautiful. We didn't care for the eggs, but they had different specials every day which proved to be interesting and somewhat tasty. We enjoyed the walk up the hill every morning, but can understand it can be daunting for the less mobile. They do have shuttles you can request to get up the hill. One of my wife's favorite aspects of the resort was the "cat cafe" and the various feline friends she made during our stay. Our wedding planner Erin has adopted these formerly feral cats and has gotten them fixed and vaccinated. They lounge around various areas of the resort, up at the main building and down by the beach. It's a nice sight for cat lovers. My wife thought it was really nice to be able to drop by and say hello to the island cats while our kittys were back at home. The resort has three different beaches. They were never busy during our stay. One is best for swimming, one for snorkeling, and the other just for a secluded walk. You can also check out snorkeling gear and kayaks and get beach towels. Tips For Your Stay: 1. There is a grocery store with an ATM called the Seaside Market which is nearby. I suggest stopping by and getting snacks/lunches/alcohol and cash (max $200) for tips taxi rides, etc. This will save you from spending a lot on expensive resort alcohol and food. 2. If you're getting sandwiches at the grocery let the taxi know. The sandwiches take a long time and the driver may not want to wait around for you. 3. Plan your taxis a couple hours in advance, and have them pick you up at the main building. The driver may get confused where they are picking you up, but if you're at the main building you cannot get blamed for not being ready for the taxi. 4. You can rent cabanas but its really unnecessary as the chairs are just as comfortable and relaxing. On a final note, we are very glad we picked the Buccaneer for our wedding and are grateful for our wedding planners who went above and beyond what was expected of them and really made the difference for our stay.

Yelp
WORST RESORT I HAVE EVER TRAVELED TO!!! There was a cockroach on my toothbrush this morning. 2. We ate at the mermaid last night. Didn't have water or drinks for thirty minutes. Received one drink in an hour and a half. Received appetizers after an hour and forty-five minutes. Horrendous service and the worst servers I've ever had. 3. This morning, went to the breakfast buffet in our robes. Rather than privately coming to our table and asking respectfully, the manager on the floor chased us out of the restaurant to let us know we made a guest uncomfortable and not to wear the robes to breakfast again. Worst service. Disrespectful. Cockroaches. Do not stay here. Go to a different island altogether.

Yelp
My friend decided to treat my bf and I to the breakfast buffet at this hotel. It's a bit pricey but you can eat til your pants expand. The food displayed included: eggs, eggs w/cheese, chocolate chip waffles, pork bacon, sausage links, sausage patty, corned beef hash topped with poached eggs, French toast, breakfast potatoes, hash browns, grits, cereal, baked goods, & fresh fruit. I guess it's your typical continental breakfast. The view is beautiful from the dining area. It looks over the beach and you can see St. Thomas from a distance. I would have loved to stay at this hotel if it wasn't full so that I could have experience all that it had to offer. Next time though for sure! There was a table of fresh juices: guava, tomato, orange, apple, and I believe pineapple.

Yelp
The Buccaneer is a great resort located on the northern coast of the island with quick access to downtown Christiansted. The property boast three private beaches a pool, and a shallow wading pool for beach chairs. Mermaid beach is the biggest and most popular beach on the property which offers food/drink service and plenty of free water sports if you're a guest. Rooms were nice, slightly outdated. Which is fine because our room was situated right on the water and spent most of the time on the deck looking at the views. The main restaurant on the property, the Terrace, where breakfast and dinner is served has amazing views of the water and the food is actually pretty good despite the high price tag. We ate dinner at the Terrace one night and everything was fine from the service to the food, but went into town for a majority of of meals with the exception of breakfast as the Terrace offers a great breakfast buffet complimentary to guests. Service from the time we got picked up from the airport to the time we left was impeccable. This resort most definitely cares about the guest experience and will bend over backwards to accommodate the guests needs. We were going to rent a car but there was no need as the Buccaneer has their own shuttle drivers and private Taxi's on call. Overall, we certainly enjoyed our time at the Buccaneer. The only thing this resort doesn't have on the premises is a little store to buy things like juice, water, and snacks. Also, be aware that most stores in Christiansted close at 3-5 PM and a lot of the restaurants close around 9.

Yelp
So at the Buccaneer grotto for the first time to get food since the mermaid grill is closed. The children were happy to see the pool and go for a swim while we waited fo the food. The new manager Graham promptly told them the pool is for guests only and they could only swim at the beach but he could happily get us chairs for $10. Each! $74. For my children's lunch but let me rent you some chairs! We come to mermaid beach several times a month with a typical bill of $150-$200 while eating at mermaid beach during off season. Adding a chair charger is petty and will cost you customers when you need it most. We will be happy to eat beforehand and enjoy the public beach. Thanks

Yelp
We came to visit the hotel, potentially eat at the restaurant and spend a day at the beach. The view from up on the hill (where the restaurant, and main area is) is amazing. Almost 360 degrees of great views. I found that when hotel staff assumed we were guests, they were very kind but were rude when we approached them as visitors. They charge $10/chair at the beach for non-guests and have specific areas where you are allowed to sit (and you definitely can't use the pool). There are nicer beaches on the island, with cheaper, less stuck-up approaches to chair rentals/sharing the beach/enjoying the island. I realize they are trying to allow their paying guests to have a perfect time, they simply didn't leave me wanting to come back, as a guest or paying customer.

Yelp
It's one of the best resorts currently open on St Croix, although it seems only about half of the hotels and resorts have reopened two years after Hurricane Maria. The staff is friendly and helpful. The property has its own generator so it doesn't suffer from the frequent blackouts. There is also a nice-looking golf course. The rooms are spacious and the beds are top quality. Their breakfast is pretty good and included in most room rates. But, the food for lunch and dinner is expensive and not among the best on the island. Plus, in a seemingly random manner, they close the restaurants for dinner. Sometimes you can get drinks and food on the Terrace in the main house. Other times the bar is open but no food. At those times, to eat on property requires trudging down the hill to the beach bar/restaurant, and fighting the bugs at Beauregard's. Other days, Beauregard's is closed and The Terrace is the only place to eat at night. I found this to be very inconvenient. For some reason, they absolutely insist on advance reservations for the "fine dining" tables in the Terrace--when it's open. However, the same menu is available at the bar on nights they are serving food. Whenever that might be. Your best best is to get a room here, hang around the beach during the day, and head into Christiansted for dinner.

Yelp
The island itself is beautiful, so that gave the hotel a nice ambiance. The hotel was ok. The customer service was definitely subpar. I had someone call to give me a wake up call and the woman who answered at the front desk proceeded to tell the person that she was busy checking out 40 people and she would have to wait to be helped. Are you kidding me? The task was simply to be connected to my room so I wouldn't miss my flight! Finally the lady at the front desk attempted to connect the call to my room, but then said I wasn't staying there!! She proceeded to put her back on hold for 10 minutes! Knowing I may not wake up and miss my flight. The person hung up and called back after 10 minutes of being on hold and politely asked to be connected to my room because I was going to miss my flight due to oversleeping. Magically, my name appeared in the system and she connected the call. She seemed quite annoyed and repeated again that she was checking out 40 people. Well, I'm sorry she was the only one at the front desk, but it took her longer to give me attitude and complain to me about all the work she had to do checking out a large group. She could have just connected the call and been done with it. Power trip? Attitude? Island time? I don't know. Either way I paid way too much to have people treated this way.

Yelp
First time visit here and found check in to be quick, but getting baggage to our room was a long delay. We had a room on the second floor of the main building which had a stunning view of the resort and beach and water. We had a king size bed which was comfortable and a balcony which was super. They provide you with a full bottle of shampoo, conditioner and hand cream, which are nice products. Loved the room, but housekeeping every day was always later, which was often problematic. The dining areas are nice, with beautiful views. Food is pricey, but expected at a resort like this. Our only wish was that they had a restaurant with casual food for dinner. The Grotto was closed, so maybe that has it when open. They had a nice owners reception where they served wine and some snacks. Great steel drum music and men dancing on stilts. Very nice event. The Mermaid has a fire dancer one evening which was ok. Loved the grilled food at that restaurant. It is Island service, so expect to wait at all the restaurants. The beach area is nice, with plenty of seating areas. Wish they had more shaded area as the sun is intense. They provide paddle boards, kayaks, floating and snorkel equipment. There are many tennis courts, but the walk up and down the hill in the intense heat got old.

Yelp
This is my home away from home. I fell in love with this place the moment I stepped foot on the resort grounds. So beautiful, quiet and welcoming. I spent five days here. The best five days of my life and this was the first time I've stayed at this hotel. The staff was tremendously wonderful. All were friendly and helpful. When I saw my room I was blown away by how gorgeous it was and the view of the deep blue ocean was just spectacular. I stayed here in September of 2016. It was my first vacation in years. After this lovely stay I began thinking about where else I wanted to vacation but after months of researching other hotels and resorts I came back to thinking about The Buccaneer. I thought how happy it made me to be there and how much I want to feel like that again. So, I got in touch with my travel agent in the last few weeks and already booked my next stay at The Buccaneer. I can't wait to go. Is it September yet? It is a pricey hotel but worth every penny.

Yelp
Originally Spent 3 nights here of 6.. after checking into an Airbnb for a hot 10 minutes, called and asked to extend our stay here. The service here is amazing, the breakfast here is wonderful and all tables have a view. Will definitely come back. The beach is clean, service is great, make dinner arrangements at the Mermaid in advance of your arrival- they fill up fast, especially on themed nights. We ended up staying on the other end of the island for two night and the amenities here I should have appreciated more was- breakfast, access to beach, snorkeling equipment, safe gated entry, filtered water provided in a pitcher in your room and cleanliness.

Yelp
Beautiful place to stay and the staff are amazing. Not a yucky face on the place. Everyone is happy and willing to please. Amazing features at this hotel especially if you love water sports, there's a great gym and the food, WOW Definitely a return for me

Yelp
This place is a joke. I went to breakfast and they only were serving a buffet for $35. This was one of the worst buffets . The breakfast only had bacon and sausage. There was no omlet station, no shrimp, no locks. The presentation was like a 2 star Quality Inn.

Yelp
Great Wedding Location. We purchased the Elopement package. The Wine, Champagne, Cake, Beach Location, Flowers, Massages, Bouquet were perfect. Wedding planners, Laura and Erin were warm and helpful. Nearly all their recommended professionals were perfect... But DON'T (again DO NOT) select Kelly Greer as your photographer. Her bully attitude, stubborn ways and poor communications nearly ruined our wedding and left a black cloud over our experience. Her second "photographer" (amateur photographer husband) kept getting in the way of the videographer's shots. I was told she won't listen to anyone because "It's Kelly's show". But all other recommended professionals were fantastic: Our Officiant who performed the service, Reissa Leigh, my Wife's Make Up by Mia, Hair by Denise Lindsey, our Wedding Video by Jerry of MJS Visions all were so exactly what we hoped for. All the Restaurants and Bar staff were so warm, courteous and professional. Thank you to the Buccaneer for your professionalism and making our day one to remember.

Yelp
Spent 4 nights for a family wedding. The check in process was slow and complex. While always friendly, the staff seemed completely untrained on how to effectively do their jobs. The servers spent crazy amount of time putting in our orders into the computer system (at the bar for drinks or at the restaurant for lunch or dinner). Seemed way too complex. The room was clean, but even though we were staying for 4 nights (versus 2 as we saw many others doing), we got the room right next to the lobby. We paid for an ocean view, but only got a partial view. Our air conditioning unit made significant noise. We chose not to complain/ask to be moved, because it would have sent us back into the complex check in process again. On the bright side, the food and drinks were VERY good. The servers were lovely people, but certainly not speedy nor good at the jobs. We coined the phrase..."Island time = bad service at the Buccaneer." Again, it could be because they were not trained. Will not be back again unless new ownership makes a significant investment in refreshing the property and training their staff.

Yelp
Rooms on the beach side of the property are nice. Food in the hotel and beach bar is good but not great. Much better fare in town. Wifi is solid on the property. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Since Covid didn't allow us to travel to Europe as originally planned, we spent our money at this resort. Our room was in the 100 section, just prior to the main hotel building. We paid a little over $500 per night. The room was nice and clean. We loved having a large patio with a beautiful view of the ocean. I give the room a 5 Star rating. Quiet and the A/C worked well. The staff was very nice and pleasant. Dining - 2 Stars. I found the food to be average and each time we sat time to eat lunch or dinner, AN HOUR later, the food arrived. After traveling, exploring, swimming, we were not prepared to wait that long for the food to be prepared. The breakfast was mostly buffet, but you could order a few special items like oatmeal and eggs "your way". Breakfast was the only meal that went smoothly. There is a wait staff available on the beach as well - but again, it takes a long time. I recommend this hotel for the accommodations and the view and the staff, but drive to Christianstead or Frederickstead for lunch and dinner.

Yelp
Most BORING hotel I ever been too. Resort is beautiful, but ZERO island vibe. No music, super quiet. It you want that than this is your hotel. Over priced and over rated. Won't be back. I gave 3 stars on the beauty of the resort - food and staff get 1/2 a star.

Helyn S.

Yelp
First, be prepared for a $49/day Energy Fee plus $55/day in taxes. This added over $700 to our stay. Taxes we understand, but we certainly weren't using $49/day in energy. Our view was beautiful and the staff they had was very friendly, but they need more staff. It was not uncommon to wait an hour for food or drinks. At times, we were literally unable to see a single employee while on the beach near the Mermaid Restaurant. We were told by our cab driver that he consistently hears this complaint about the Buccaneer. They were given Covid relief money to keep staff but let the staff go anyway. Once you're on-site, you have no way to get food or drinks (unless you pay for a cab) other than to wait however long it takes... We went with two other couples. One couple had no hot water and their sink backed up. They literally had to shower in ice-cold water. The other couple's television went in and out. These issues were fixed when brought to the management's attention, but it shouldn't have happened at all at the rates we paid. Our room was on the side of the Great House. The view was amazing but there is a giant generator or some sort of machinery off to the side. We couldn't sit on the deck and enjoy the view because of the noise of the machines. We had to keep the door shut to the deck to avoid it. If you go, make sure to ask for a room on the front of the Great House. Our friends paid the same rate but had rooms on the front with no noise from the machines. It's a beautiful setting and the staff is friendly and helpful, but the owners need to invest in the property to make it worth the cost.

Yelp
The staff was awesome and very helpful. The ambiance is relaxing. The food is delightful. The breakfast buffet offers a variety of food. You can choose from an assortment of food. There is also a cook who makes fresh omelets by order. I tasted the potatoes, grilled turkey, scrambled eggs, and toast. The fresh fruit was great too. They offer breakfast options for everyone. This was enjoyable experience.

Yelp
Vastly overpriced everything, with so-so service. One small example--we woke up the first two mornings coughing so I looked at the A/C filter--gross and filthy. Asked them to replace it, all they did was TURN IT AROUND thinking we wouldn't notice. Is that a good enough review for you to pass on this hotel?

Yelp
What an absolutely gorgeous resort!! Old world glamour. Rooms are bright and cheery with balconies. Staff is lovely. The grounds are gorgeous with breathtaking views of the water and the coast. It seems like a dream! Love the history of it too.

Yelp
I wasn't super impressed with the food here, and it is expensive. However, the bartender was super nice and told funny stories. We watched the sunset over the ocean and it was stunning. After sundown, they had a live piano player.

Yelp
Hubby and I did not stay at the hotel, but we plaited golf at The Buccaneer Golf Course that is a part of the resort. We took advantage of the twilight rate: $70 all-you-can-play including golf cart. The club rentals were $20 each for TaylorMade clubs. I never played with women's clubs before and I ended up hitting well :) The fees are much cheaper for those staying at the resort. It was worth the fees. The views were amazing and the course was empty. There was all sorts of wildlife including white dragons and iguanas. It was a very redlaxing round of golf. After playing, we had dinner at the restaurant, which overlooks the ocean and you can see the lights from the yachts across the bay. It was very romantic. Live music, a refined dinner, and excellent service was just what I needed after all the trekking we had been doing the past week. I think I'll book a massage at the spa. The prices are reasonable.

Yelp
Excellent customer service and what a historic place. Beautiful rooms and I had a beautiful beach view that I feel in love with. The pools are still open during COVID and most things are. Love it here!!

Yelp
Our room in the main house had a nice view of the ocean, was clean and bed was comfortable. Mermaid beach was nice with plenty of activities but the snorkeling was mediocre, mostly grass beds with one small reef that required a long swim. Insect bites, no see-ums, are a problem, my wife had many bites/welts. Breakfast buffet was very good and dining on mahi and wahoo were good. Golfing is overpriced for a mediocre course. Service was hit and miss, some of the staff were friendly and some have a resentful attitude. Overall found service quality lacking.

Yelp
I didn't stay at this hotel but I did go to the restaurant and I must say it was an amazing experience. The view is INCREDIBLE at sunset. The live music and the affordable prices on the plates were incredible. The reason why I have it three stars is because we waited about 40 minutes to get our food served which is pretty ridiculous. Personally I'd still go back because the food was tasteful and the absolutely stunning views are absolutely worth it

Yelp
This is the best place I've ever been! The room and the atmosphere and the service were phenomenal!! Can't say enough good things about this historic, fabulous place! I would definitely come back!!

Yelp
Absolutely terrible and rude staff. Hotel is extremely dated and dirty. I wouldn't recommend anyone stay here unless you absolutely have to.

Yelp
Hey this is the place to be for a nice comfortable and relaxing time however long you stay! Everywhere there's a beautiful sight, surrounded by the hilly golf course for you golfers. Food is good not premo but good. You have to have slightly deep pockets to stay here but it's worth it. This place is the place for a beautiful picturesque wedding, I know I will get married here but compared to ST John and the other islands, this place on ST Croix will due!

Rob J.

Yelp
I know I'm late getting this in as I was married here in December of 2016. However, as this was my first time on Yelp I felt compelled to find the Buccaneer and say a few things. This was one of the most magical and wonderful places I've ever been too! It will leave you speechless. By the end of our stay, we felt as though we had experienced a true trip of a lifetime. What made the whole experience so special was that the staff truly made US feel special without being over the top. Left you feeling as though they welcomed us into their home and went out of their way to help share all that it had to offer!

Diana M.

Yelp
The Buccaneer hotel is an amazing place! If you enjoy snorkeling, there are turtles and much more. My husband and I like to begin our days with long walks on the paths which wind our way to the complementary breakfast buffet at the Terrace restaurant which is unsurpassed. The omelette station and chefs specials are prepared to your specification. My favorite fruit choices are the mangos and papayas! We have been pleased with all of the rooms we have stayed in. The beds are comfortable and the maid and room service is outstanding. I highly recommend this resort for a relaxing vacation for two, for couples, and for families. Diana

Yelp
okay ... so here we go. Arrived on June 13th 2020 for my bday getaway. Leandra at the front desk was such a sweetheart , she answered every question we had and even gave us a ride to the restaurant because our rental wouldn't have came until the next day she also picked us back up and took us to our room. day 1 we arrived at the mermaid for breakfast , breakfast was "ok" ... I was actually shocked at the presentation of the food. Expected more. small portions , small plates , taste mediocre. we found out that was the only restaurant open on the resort ... so we had to have all of our meals at this restaurant. We went for lunch .... had chicken curry bowl ... it was literally grilled chicken chucks with curry sauce over some rice .... never have I seen chicken curry like that ... I had the jerk wings . Nothing jerk about those wings . They were very dark in color but no flavor. I was looking for spice and got nothing ... Sorry . the next day we had a great time at the beach ... enjoyed the resort activities, fast forward .... every day we had meals from this restaurant and I wasn't impressed, I was looking for Caribbean cuisine when I planned on going to st croix. That was not it. the customer service was also "OK" ... no conversation, no customer service qualities what's so ever .... no smile ,... nothing . Just what do U want , here u go and gratuity is _____ and stood right there to wait for it as if we don't tip . Tiffany was great though , and the chef Jaree ! Would only go back to st croix to see them ! But I will not be staying at the buccaneer ! My last day there I go to the office to return my key cards ... me: hi I want to return my room key for 113 .... front desk: DROP IT THERE! ...... like excuse me Lmfaooo who tf are you talking to . there was no ... please come back I hope u had a great birthday with us or I hope u enjoyed your stay ...lmao nothing . Drop it there! Was yelled at me ... yeah ... will never ever be going back to the Buccaneer. Felt like I was in jail with the same horrible food everyday and rude customer service .

Yelp
My favorite hotel on the island by far. Great for kids and adults alike. Beach is very nice and has lots of great seating and games for kids. Golf course is a must if you play. Would have been 5 stars but the place is not cheap and in some ways maybe a bit too much, (eg, paid $16.50 for a rum and coke, whereas the whole bottle of Cruzan Rum on the island is $11 and a can of coke us $1.50). Better have a hefty budget to spend.
