My dad and I had been driving all day on the back roads of Utah. Exhausted, we were pulling into Tropic from the North and happened on this inn. We'd half joked about spending one of our nights on the scenic route home from family visits at a bed and breakfast. It seemed indulgent. It was in all the best ways. It was affordable too. There were no other cars in the drive, so I wondered if it was open for business. It was. The guests were all still out enjoying the gorgeous vistas, scenic overlooks, hiking and biking in the area.
The inn has seating on all sides to enjoy the changing light on the colorful mesas. Theresa opened the door just as I was trying it, accompanied by her granddaughter. They'd been in the kitchen finishing dinner and preparing to start baking s'more brownies. They had a room with two memory-foam topped queens at a great rate. I was surprised. I was sure we'd have to rent two rooms. It was at the top of the main house with a breeze cooling it and views of the surrounding cliffs and farms. There was even what looked like a homemade lemon hand and foot scrub in the bath.
The whole house was decorated with gorgeous photos of wildlife and stunning geography and other artwork, like a simple piece of drift wood.
We were introduced to Larry and both grandchildren, who were there visiting -- an extra treat for dad and I. They were terrific helpers, showing us our room, helping supervise their grandfather carrying the luggage and explaining the wifi and t.v.
Theresa told us our options for dinner in Tropic. There's not a lot, but there's more down the road.
In the morning, we woke and had an early morning walk listening to the roosters, cows and sheep who all surprisingly live in town in pens between the houses. The inn is situated just outside of town, so it's quiet even with the windows open. When we returned, Theresa offered us coffee. She was finishing cutting up the cantaloupe and beginning on the strawberries. By the time we had our car loaded, she was inviting us to sit down to pecan waffles with subtle hints of cinnamon. She was happy to accommodate my veggie needs. Dad had eggs and bacon with his waffle and even had seconds on the coffee.
I overheard them talking to a couple about their dinner. They were keeping abreast of the quality of the options to make recommendations. Theresa interrupted Larry to come and wish us safe travels. I discovered they're new to inn keeping. They just celebrated their first year, and they had guests the first night they moved in, taking over from the previous owners, belongings still in boxes. Given the warmth and quality of service, breakfast and accommodations already, I can hardly imagine what's in store as they gain experience. I think they've found their calling.
