The Butcher Shop & Grill

2015 and 2025 here. Still the same outstanding experience. You have to order from the butcher counter directly and get your individual cut and size. Starters are very good and they have a great selection. Paired our dinner with a nice bottle of Groot Constantia Pinotage from 2023 and went very well with the meat. Coming back it will be for sure a place I visit for dinner or lunch. Looking forward trying their outlet in Capetown next week

A Johannesburg institution. One of the first places to come to for a steak fix when I'm in town. Prices are fair and my T-bone last night was heavenly, cooked perfectly with nothing but salt. The bernaise sauce was slightly too tangy but the black peppercorn sauce was delicious. Service is usually prompt and professional, but a bunch of waiters standing around at the entrance is a bad look, intimidating rather than welcoming. Nevertheless, a fine restaurant and cant wait to go back.

Good meat quality. Tried fillet medium well. Cooking degree was good. But presentation of the food is too poor. Nice sauces with fillet ie. Bordelaise, Diane, mushroom sauce would be nicer as an option. Otherwise, eating experience becomes boring. Also, waiter waited too long for tip before bringing the pos machine. Not everyone had to tip, especially table for 1 and simple eating.

The Butcher Shop is a must visit if you want to experience authentic South African meat on a grill. Few do it better at this price point. The vibe will have you happy and your crowd will be in a talkative mood. Service was amazing with professional smiling waiters ready to call another waiter if they need assistance. Feel free to book a big table.

Great service, tasty food, nice selection and quiet atmosphere.

We decided to have dinner there this evening. We were 9 people. All started very well. Drinks were on time and the waiter knew what was going on. It all turned when we placed our order. After placing our order the waiter came back to say that there was no mash and some had to change their order. All good and well. Then the food arrives, the fish was stale and old and was taken back and a new order had to be made for that dish as we could not eat old stale fish. The roast lamb was absolutely dry. We ordered a mushroom sauce as an extra which never arrived after asking twice. After the dinner we asked about the mushroom sauce and got told that it was forgotten. To top it all we asked for wet wipes and was told sorry we are out of wet wipes. Hope the service changes and others don’t experience the same

Well seasoned food , great service and nice ambiance.

Extremely disappointing experience. I’m from Cape Town and visiting Joburg for work, so I stopped by for a quick drink during a short break. I was passed between multiple staff members, told I needed to spend over R200 to sit in certain areas, and then charged for a juice I did not order when I had ordered a Sprite. Just because I didn’t spend much doesn’t mean I deserve to be treated as unimportant. Basic human manners were lacking. I won’t be recommending this place to colleagues or returning. I’ll go to Cilantros for lunch from now on clearly they have better service and respect. I didn’t even know about this place I just walked in but I looked at the name when I left so I could search it up and leave this review.
