The Butterfly Estates is a small conservatory located in Downtown Fort Myers. It is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to preserving native butterflies. It is mostly a greenhouse containing plants that butterflies feed on, as well as some man-made brooks and of course, the fluttering butterflies. The staff is polite and willing to answer any questions you have.
Compared to Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, it is tiny (Butterfly Estates is 3600 square feet, versus Butterfly World, which is 10 acres). Butterfly World is actually the largest butterfly park in the world. Because of this, plus the fact that Butterfly World also contains birds of different species, native and non-native butterfly species, plus the classical music that the butterflies "dance to", it is hard to beat, or even come close to Butterfly World.
For Fort Myers locals, the Butterfly Estates is fine, but if you're in South Florida, it's probably not worth making a trip out here only to see the Butterfly Estates, unless you're in the SW Florida area. Otherwise, you'd be better off going to Butterfly World (though it's about twice the price of admission of the Butterfly Estates).
