Shields Date Garden – Indio, California - Gastro Obscura

"A mammoth knight in armor points the way to Shields, just off U.S. Highway 111 in Riverside County, California. From the dusty heat of the Colorado Desert, follow the knight’s guidance into the calm and splendor of Shields Date Garden, overlooking the majestic Santa Rosa Mountains. When Floyd and Bess Shields opened the Shields Date Garden on Christmas Day in 1924, they knew competition would be strong in the rapidly-growing Coachella Valley date industry. To distinguish his date farm from all others in the valley, Floyd began offering lectures to visitors on the lawns of the garden. In the 1950s, he did one better: a slide show with a recorded soundtrack, cheekily named “The Romance and Sex Life of the Date.” Today, garden visitors can enjoy the slideshow, which has since been turned into a film that plays on a loop in the garden’s own “Romance Theatre.” But the main attraction of Shields is, without question, not the suggestively titled cinematic experience, but the actual grounds: 17 acres of date groves, with a little pond at its center and Jesus in its heart. For here, amidst the beauty of winding pathways and date palms lush with fruit, are 23 biblical sculptures depicting Christ’s life, from birth to resurrection. They were donated in 2011 by a Canadian couple who were regular Shields Garden visitors, and are dispersed amid the date palms, olive trees, aloe plants, and citrus trees that populate the garden. Visitors can also sample Floyd Shields’s two hybrid date varieties—called blonde and brunette dates—the only place in the world where they are grown. Today, nearly 95 percent of all dates grown in the United States are from the Coachella Valley. In 1936, Shields also developed and patented a date sugar that he called date crystals, which are the key ingredient in Shields Date Garden’s most popular beverage: their signature date shake. Visitors can enjoy a date shake at the original counter, set up in the 1960s. The café at Shields of course celebrates dates on its menu. While they have your garden-variety omelets, sandwiches, and steak, consider trying the date burger, date pancakes, or just plain ol’ dates stuffed with cheese, jalapenos, and prosciutto, and wrapped in bacon. There’s also the garden shop, which sells all the date varieties grown on the grounds, in addition to the famous Shields date crystals, along with a variety of sauces and vinegars, including the very intriguing figs and date vinegar. Know Before You Go The garden is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day, except when it’s very windy. There’s a $5 entry fee per person. The café is open from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00p.m. every day." - Avoiding Regret, lvxi5511, F Findingbalance18, SCF, d dmarie1975, Rohini Chaki, dmarie1975, l lvxi5511, d daleboyum, S SCF, Findingbalance18

Google
Absolutely enjoyed having breakfast here for the first time—we liked it so much, we went back! It did not disappoint. The food is delicious, the ambiance is great, and the service is excellent. Definitely recommend! Don’t let the exterior fool you - it’s a great place!!!

Google
We went for breakfast and had a great experience. The Date Shakes were absolutely delicious—definitely a highlight. We also tried the green sauce chilaquiles with carne asada and really enjoyed them. There's a shop on-site where you can browse their merchandise, souvenirs, and a variety of date products. Inside the shop, there’s also a café if you’re just looking for a drink. I’d definitely return, even if it’s just for another date milkshake.

Rita Adriaans

Google
Very good restaurant and the personnel are very friendly to everyone and the outside environment is perfect to people who visit palm dessert. One thing you MUST try is the date shake and everything is awesome. It’s not to big portions and not to small. Very good restaurant MUST TRY!!!

Google
I came to try their Dates milkshake, and buy some Dates. The 2Ib was for $25 so i passed. The milkshake was not make to order, I was supervised when he handed to me almost immediately, it was really frozen and hard to drink, it was for $9.95 and that was more than the average, and there was nothing special about it. They sell different made in house syrups and sauce and some cake. I did not try them I felt that they were overpriced. There was plenty of parking

Google
This is such a beautiful little place! The staff is absolutely precious. The food is amazing and well plated! The coffee was also delicious, and they were so kind to my stubborn corgi! Wonderful spot, and I will be bringing all of my friends!

Google
Overrated place. The food was well cooked and that’s about it. Nothing special about the flavor or the ingredients used. Basic presentation. Well cooked is the bare minimum you would expect when eating at a restaurant. The service? Well, it took around 10 minutes of waiting for someone to take my order. Then somebody else just dropped off the food at my table without saying anything. Then someone else randomly asked me if I had jelly (I did). Somebody else brought me the check and then I paid. Never knew who my server actually was, so who earned the tip? No one today.

Andrew Knifer

Google
We live right behind shields and have never been there! It was excellent! They seated us quickly, server took a little longer than desired to greet us, but they were busy! The food was excellent but a little pricy for three. After the delicious meal, we walked the grounds. Beautiful beautiful beautiful! Will return!

Google
I have been here a few times over the years. The food is always fresh and tasty. I went with the wife the first time and been back a few times with my mom and various other people. I recommend this place for Breakfast, Lunch or even Brunch. They have a variety of good food and the atmosphere adds to the whole experience. Highly recommend and will definitely be back. Go get yourself a date shake and walk the grounds.

Yelp
I really like this place regardless of the fact that it's really really touristy. Today, 100s maybe even thousands of people were there and I had to try and find a parking space in their back 40 parking which is dirt and dusty. I would have stayed except for the fact that I have NO patience to wait for my food. So I will try their cafe another time .. .

Yelp
Nice atmosphere in the cafe. It was a nice day so it was nice to eat outside. The service was good. I split a portobello mushroom burger and fries with a dining companion. The burger was really good, loved the eggplant in it. The fries were really good, nice and crispy.

Yelp
Tried out the cafe this morning after months and months of driving by. I ordered chilaquiles with a side of beans, I didn't have anything to complain about. Didn't ask for a substitute or extra sauce, etc. It was a solid flavor and I ate almost my entire plate! My husband ordered the ratatouille omelette, he was very quiet and cleaned his plate. The entrance is unclear because there's a sign to go inside, but then they send you out back to get seated by a host/hostess which seems a little weird. A sign that guides you around back makes more sense. The patio is beautiful, you are surrounded by the lush gardens which feels like a perfect setting to share a meal with family and friends! Once you're done here, stop into the market and get some dates. We wanted a few pounds of dates and the prices were very reasonable!

Yelp
Always a great choice no matter if you are a visitor or local, great good and a fun dining experience. YELP SHORT ANSWER: Yes, this is seasonal so check ahead of time and eating outside is preferred when weather permits. LOCATION: Branded on the 111 just off Jefferson. Good parking but be aware this is a big tourist destination famous for their Date Shakes but there is a restaurant hidden around back. FACILITY: Rather dated, ha snuck that in, but this place has a patina that is very authentic and it is an icon of CV and I hope it never changes. MENU: Pretty basic with an offering of breakfast and lunch items. Full bar as well if you need that Bloody Maria before your day at the pool. FOOD PREP: Very much a diner, nothing fancy but done nicely. FOOD QUALITY: Excellent, the food here is great and consistent. LIBATIONS: Just for the purpose of my Yelp review I had to take one for the team here, drinks are alway good here and not over priced. It is part of the experience. WAITSTAFF: The best, everyone seems happy and service is amazing even on busy days with demanding tourists afoot. OVERALL VALUE: Not too bad but fairly priced for the experience. TIP: If it is your first time, get there early and enjoy a breakfast then go look around. You can shop in the gift shoppe or take a walk through the date fields then get your date shake to go.

Yelp
We tried the taco bar at shields cafe . $5 beers and $10 tacos pair -- very tasty and great deal. Excellent service - sat outside patio - nice covered patio ambiance.

Yelp
I've been coming to Shields for years and I finally made it to the cafe. They offered indoor and outdoor dining. They serve breakfast and lunch until 2pm. The menu was much larger than I expected. They have a daily drink specials. Taco Bar Weds-Saturday 2-6pm and live music on the weekends. The service was friendly and fast. The food was excellent and well prepared. A lovely lunch in the desert sunshine. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Great food and great staff! It has a romantic courtyard. Would be 5 stars, but it's a little bit on the pricier side. Definitely worth a visit.

Judy G.

Yelp
Large portions, good variety, excellent service and fair prices. And very dog friendly

Yelp
Worst over easy eggs ever.I would not go back for anything. I left the two hard boiled eggs on my plate. And waitresses never asked if anything was wrong. Adam thanks for your reply and offer. But you only get one chance to make impression. Yesterday was my birthday and it started off bad.Just got back from Louise's Party and it was amazing. Thanks for your reply.

Yelp
The outdoor ambiance is delightful, complemented by an exceptionally attentive staff. The children's portions are generous, and the food is both flavorful and served promptly.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service, great food. I had the country fried steak plate, and the gravy was delicious.

Yelp
I would have never guessed this beautiful restaurant was behind this old looking white building! We had a lovely breakfast with extended family; twelve people in our party. Outdoor seating at 10 am in March was perfect. Beautiful garden to admire. Everyone enjoyed their food. I had the chicken and waffles. The chicken tenders were slightly over-battered and dry. Waffle was perfect, crisp, and fluffy. Portion was perfect for my daughter and I to share. My other kids ordered from kids menu, pancake and French toast with fruit. Again, generous portion. French toast was thick and delicious. Pancake was 2 large Micky Mouse pancakes. It came with variety of fresh, delicious fruit. Sorry, I didn't get pictures of the food because it looked so good and we were starving!

Diane K.

Yelp
The food was delicious. The service friendly and attentive. The outdoor ambiance with music on a Saturday morning for breakfast was outstanding.

Yelp
really good food, didn't know this was back here, but great garden Been to Shields a handful of times but it'd been 5+ years and had no idea there's now a cafe behind the store. Food was great! We started with stuffed dates which were great. Tons of different flavors blending together really well in a very rich appetizer. Would absolutely get again. I got the date omelet because of course you have to get something with dates. It was very tasty. The sweetness of the dates really added something to the omelet and made for a very tasty, excellent meal. Plenty filling too, probably could've stretched the stuffed dates & omelet into two meals.

Yelp
Horrible service. Sat there for 10 min and watched the waited walk back and forth completely ignoring us, not even a glass of water or the greeting was offered.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum! Food is delicious service is exceptional! Very friendly people ambiance is nice too

Yelp

Yelp
Food and service was amazing. The breakfast choices are massive and I highly recommend the biscuits and gravy.

Yelp
With the Palm Desert farmers markets on hiatus during the summer, Shields is the closest place to get fresh local dates, so my husband and I made a lunch date out of it one afternoon and dined at the café before hitting up the shop. The café is cute with a diner feel. Pretty extensive menu with lots of comfort food and plenty of dishes with dates worked in. We both had the pattie melt. The burger patty was thick, sourdough was good, and it was just the right amount of melty greasiness. Fries were mediocre. I caught a glimpse of a few other dishes people around us ordered. Everything looked good and it seems like overall portions are very generous. The gardens afford a nice stroll before or after a meal.

Yelp
I thought the service was spectacular but the food was honestly not that great. It's also all outdoor dining so sadly flies were everywhere, maybe with the warmer weather they could have big fans that deters flies? Just a suggestion. We had the belgium waffle, french dip, apple salad with chicken, country fried steak. Also each of us had a date shake which was probably the best out of the whole meal, i'd be sad if they made a date shake wrong. The belgium waffle was very plain even with it's strawberry sauce - at that price maybe they should have put some fresh strawberries on top. The french dip was soggy, tasted a little weird and the meat was tough. The au jus was very bland as well. Country fried steak was okay, but once again very chewy. Salad was decent, tasted pretty fresh. Honestly, the view and environment was great, so a good place to stop by for tourists or locals that want to escape into a garden. Date shake is a definite must get, but food wise we had 4 different items throughout the menu and they were all subpar, maybe there are a couple amazing items but none we tried. Maybe will take my other friends who visit the valley here if they want to try something local.

Yelp
Excellent food and a delightful place to have breakfast. One of the places we always take out of town guest to showcase the desert- they always love it. Great selection of both American and Hispanic items- all fresh! Love this place...
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Always stop by for their Date Shake. If you've never had one I highly recommend swinging by. It's so good.
google avatar

Brenda M.

Yelp
The wait is awhile but that's okay because you can walk around and in no time you'll be seated. The food is delicious and quick. Everyone is very attentive. Live music and overall great.

Vern H.

Yelp
My wife and I are on vacation. We had breakfast today and the food was fair. Our order was messed up and they tried to correct it but with no success. The food was bland. It was not our best experience. The staff were exceptional.
google avatar

Carrie G.

Yelp
Great service and love the mellow live music! Had the fish tacos and the ahi poke tower - delish! Great place to bring grandma and we had a group of 8.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Outdoor eating is very pleasant. Must try a date shake. Breakfast is highly recommended.

James T.

Yelp
I'm sure there are items on the menu that are good, but definitely not the blueberry pancakes. I had the bacon, a choice is included the 16.00 charge, which was excellent! The pancakes were thick, which I like, but so very dry. Has anyone seen the Three Stooges when Curly makes pancakes and then More mistakenly takes a potholder and tries to eat it? That was it. The waiter said they have plenty of blueberries, but mine had 3-4 in each pancake. Forget those. I love Shield's, but they charge a 3% fee for cards, so we have to pay them, to pay them?? FU. No one cares about being ripped off around this desert, which is why businesses do it, and get away with it. Stick with the date shakes, but bring cash.
google avatar

Miks R.

Yelp
great service and high quality food! a really good variety on their menu. the store next door is cute too

G H.

Yelp
Date shakes! The food is good and the patio is pleasant if it isn't too hot yet. Good service.
google avatar

Jamie B.

Yelp
Food and service excellent. Shady beautiful outdoor large patio. Do not walk the garden unless you love Jesus and want to see lots of Jesus statues. It's not a botanical garden but more a religious walk for born again Christian's. About 20 jesus statues...maybe lots more...I got out!
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
Everything you need or want to know about dates plus every date you never knew about. Date shakes! Weird catholic sculpture garden (Jesus has a cell phone?!)
google avatar

Hayley H.

Yelp
Must-visit brunch spot for whenever you're in the Indio area! My mom, her girlfriend and I stopped by the Cafe at Shields for a girl-date on their sunny patio! Not only will they feed you, but they also host a large date garden (free entry,) a gift shop and theater. Plus they have cocktails! Their menu largely encompass American and Mexican eats. They also have a number of menu items featuring their famous dates, including the fan-favorite date shake, salads, and burgers. I decided to go the safe route and passed on the dates (sorry.) Instead I ordered a mimosa and their trio of chicken tacos. To be honest, these tacos were pretty bland. Easily edible, but a little boring. Luckily the atmosphere, gards, and quirky concept make up for what lacks in the food department.
google avatar

Doreen K.

Yelp
Nice garden to sit relax and, listen to good music. Food mediocre, I had a tuna sandwich and, my friend had fried chicken both lacking flavor. I asked my serve four times to bring me any chilly sauce to no avail. Flies kept coming on my dish making it unpleasant to eat. They should have installed fly traps for the prices they are charging! I was very upset when I saw an extra charge on my bill. When I questioned my server she replied. It is written here on the menu we have a service charge for credit cards? Who would think to look for that? Never again. Will not recommend.
google avatar

Miriam O.

Yelp
All my years that I was raised in Indio I have never visit shields, Wow what a surprise, an absolute Jem in the desert, a beautiful walk along the Gardens and what a gift to walk thru and see all the sculptures and scriptures of Jesus life, absolutely beautiful. We had chilaquiles and it's was super delicious, the service was exceptional. I will definitely come back again.

Yelp
The Cafe at Shields Date Garden has been excellent each time we visited for breakfast and lunch. The cafe is located behind, and connected to, the Shields Date Garden store. As indicated in a related review of the Shields Date Garden store, there is a biblical-themed walking garden that is pretty interesting. The cafe is currently setup for social distancing. They have misters over the main patio area, and they recently added additional tables (without misters) nearby. I was told they will be adding additional misters soon. In addition, there used to be a small out building sitting on an open area that sold yard and gardening decorations. It has been removed, and it appears they will be expanding the cafe seating area. This is a great idea. Regarding the food, it has always been great. On our most recent visit, we had the Carnitas Eggs Benedict, the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs, and two Stuffed Bacon Wrapped Dates. We started with the dates, and they were delicious. The entrees we ordered were equally delicious. Regarding the service, it was impeccable. The host was friendly and suggested we wait inside the air conditioned Shields Date Garden store; great idea. It was already almost 100 at 9:00 a.m. The host and the waiters were on it and kept our coffees full. Regarding the price, it is not cheap, but the quality of food and service is worth it.
google avatar

Sharay D.

Yelp
Finally came here for brunch and they did not disappoint. There was plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas on the tables. They had a small jazz band playing. Cute little restaurant and shop. Along time ago they used to have a whole counter with dates you came sample but now they dont. Still worth stopping at. I ordered the chicken curry salad. Very flavorful.

Jasmine F.

Yelp
I love this place! Rain or shine. Best chilaquiles in town! I'm Latina and if you try anything on the menu it's the chilaquiles.
google avatar

Kat R.

Yelp
This place was OK. Their food is similar to a another breakfast spot you will find locally. Yes they have dates, the dates pancakes was nothing special. It was regular buttermilk pancakes topped with chopped dates and you get date syrup on the side. Date syrup has the consistency of honey and a lot sweeter. Service was good but the place is kinda outdated.

MissJ V.

Yelp
Breakfast is amazing. I recommend country fried, and service is great and fast. The walk is peaceful atmosphere is peaceful and worth every penny

Nathan S.

Yelp
I loved this place. We were seated outside in this large pavilion area with fantastic lighting and greenery all around. Service was great and attentive, and my Sante Fe omelette was one of the better omelets that I have had in my life. Side of toast, potatoes, and perfect amount of spice. Menu was also extensive, my one complaint was not being able to try more items on the menu. Next time I go, I will definitely choose to go sweet, but it will be challenging not to go back to savory with the fantastic egg dishes! By the way, get the freshly squeezed orange juice.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
What a great little find! Jose our waiter and his assistants were spot on with service at this outdoor setting. My omelet with dates and feta was wonderful. My husband had the date pancakes and they were excellent. Who knew that date syrup and date butter were a thing? Don't miss this outdoor dining , enjoy a walk afterwards through the garden, all with live music playing to set the mood.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
What lovely spot! We've driven by for years, but never stopped. Had a lovely breakfast outside on patio with some great music. Service was wonderful and meal came quite quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved it here....... The food was great, the seating was a plus.... Everyone was so nice and friendly. My Strawberry shake at the end of my visit made my drive extra smooth. Lol. Check it out

Yelp
I LOVE the Cafe at Shields Date Garden, how could I have passed up such an amazing brunch spot for so many years? Please, don't make the same mistake as me - this spot is awesome! Hidden little gem of a restaurant located on the side of the giant date farm / museum / store. Indoor and outdoor seating. The weather was lovely so we sat right outside, nice breeze, everything that adds to a wonderful brunch. Service here is great. Our waitress was super friendly and the bus boys were on top of filling our waters and checking up on us. Really nice people that work here all helping out one another. Since it was our first time the waitress let us know that tickets to walk the ground for free would be included with our check. After brunch we strolled around the grounds with our free tickets and enjoyed ourselves. Aside from the service, The food and drinks are what make this place awesome and 5 star worthy. Everything at our table was delicious & cooked perfectly. The flavors are out of this world. It's scary to think I had THE BEST chilaquiles here compared to all of the Mexican restaurants I've been to. If your in the area PLEASE give the chilaquiles a try with the red sauce (to die for). My hunny got the chicken fried steak and that was also delicious, I'm normally not a fan as my grandmother makes them best but here at Shields they are also fantastic. I washed this BOMB meal down with their Bloody Mary, another home run! And called it a day. All by noon haha. This spot is a treasure and I'll definitely be back and sharing this stop with all of my friends and family. I also enjoyed that it wasn't only a meal, with the shop and walking grounds on site it made for a nice little afternoon.

Domingo C.

Yelp
The food & service was good. I recommend it. Visit the date $ citrus gardens! Space can be limited if the exterior is closed.

Diana M.

Yelp
Tight space for a restaurant, but the vibe is friendly and the food is always amazing. Our party had a variety of food including Mexican, American breakfast and lunch options. The weather was lovely, but it had rained, so we stayed indoors. It's a little tricky with kids, but overall, a nice restaurant and friendly service. I would highly recommend it when the weather is nice in the valley.
google avatar

Ray C.

Yelp
Best DATE burger ever - It's absolutely fantastic and delicious! The stuffed dates wrapped with bacons and blue cheese are divine! Another dish to try is the Walleye fish taco. The service is GREAT.
