Shetland Cake Fridges and Honesty Boxes – Bixter, Scotland - Gastro Obscura

"While honesty boxes are common among rural communities in the UK, the Shetland Islands have taken the concept further than the typical eggs and baked goods for sale outside a farmhouse. Across the islands, full-sized cake fridges and sizable structures are stocked with sauces, jams, bannocks, and even hand-knit souvenirs. The Original Cake Fridge (also known as Da Cake Fridge) was created in 2012 by Lynn Johnson, a farmer and avid baker who came up with the idea after farmers markets closed in Shetland. Without the usual outlet to sell her baked goods, Johnson decided to use the honesty box system, which was already prevalent on the islands, to sell cakes 24/7. As the fridge’s popularity grew, so did the products on offer and the number of businesses inspired by it—all of them trusting customers to leave cash as payment before taking their tasty treats. In the town of Hoswick, a brightly colored cake shed known as Emma’s Cake Corner offers sweets next to the visitor center. In the community of Sand, a box next to the bus stop offers eggs, cupcakes, and cinnamon swirl biscuits. On the island of Unst, a house-shaped box can be found next to the well-known attraction Bobby’s Bus Shelter. Know Before You Go Local websites, such as the tourism bureau and NorthLink Ferries, have published lists of some of the more notable Shetland honesty boxes and fridges. The creator of the Original Cake Fridge has also opened a tearoom next to the fridge. Tourism on Shetland is very seasonal, so most honesty boxes are likely to be closed for at least part of autumn and winter, unless explicitly marked as 24/7. Given the nature of this type of commerce, it's best to verify online if the boxes and fridges are open during your visit." - linkogecko

What a gem! We came across this by pure chance, and after struggling to find a cafe open for some days, this was a real treat. Amazing range of cakes, catering for all allergies etc., and they are delicious. All baked on the premises... superb. Lovely, quirky tea rooms with gifts too. Brilliant!

What a treat! Must visit when on Shetland. The cake fridge had a wide selection of delicious homemade treats. My personal favourite was the Cadbury Crunchie Tiffin but I don’t think you can go wrong with anything you choose. Although the tea room was closed it was a beautiful day so we enjoyed the ample outdoor space and pet the goats.

Wonderful cakes. Happy to finally visit in person. The Biscoff brownie was decadent, big enough for sharing and just amazing.

Despite being Shetland residents, this is the first time we’ve been across and the cafe has been open. Often availed ourselves of the 24 hour cake fridge….. Cafe is lovely! Very nice flat white, and the bannock and salt beef was delicious. And such lovely staff. Homely atmosphere and just delightful.

The photo says tea room open daily between 10 am and 4 pm. We were so disappointed to arrive at this amazing place after an early morning start to find it closed ... BUT the cakes in the fridge did not disappoint, it was just exceptional. Fresh and delicious. It truly is unique... 🙌

Amazing little cafe for lunch. Recommend the tomato soup and rhubarb cake, or anything out the cake fridge. Definitely got to stop here if you pass! The staff were very welcoming and attentive.

We had a wonderful experience at the cake fridge, they have a dog friendly area with great views and the staff was so warm and welcoming . If you are in the area and looking for something sweet this place is a must. From 11 am to 16 pm you can order inside and pay with card . Out of this time you have the fridge (cash only) where you can enjoy coffee/tea cakes and much more. They have their own parking
