"El Galeón del Caribe Even though it’s right across the street from top Cancún resorts near the southern end of the Hotel Zone, the entrance to this open-air restaurant remains known only to locals plus a few in-the-know travelers. Walk down the wooden staircase to find a dirt floor, a palapa roof, and tranquil lagoon views, plus affordable Caribbean seafood dishes prepared in an outdoor kitchen. You’ll also get traditional comfort food like ceviche and garlic shrimp, along with a selection of Mexican beers, but the highlight is the hot and fresh pescadillas , shredded fish in pan-fried tortillas."

⸻ I honestly don’t understand all the hype about this place. To sit down here, I had to walk almost 700 meters under the burning sun to the nearest ATM because they only accept cash. Naturally, I had high expectations, but they were not met at all. First of all, all the bathroom doors were wide open, and the smell constantly reached our table. Second, the food was disappointing. The only thing I really enjoyed was the guacamole. My shrimp dish was bitter, and I barely managed to finish it. There was also some kind of soggy tortilla on my plate, and I had no idea what to do with it — it just stayed untouched. My partner also didn’t like the food much; it was edible, but nothing special. The worst part was the mosquitoes. In less than half an hour, I was bitten over 30 times — on my legs, arms, and even through my dress. I asked the waitress for a repellent spray, she promised to bring it “in a minute,” but disappeared and only came back when we were already asking for the bill, saying that unfortunately there was no spray. That was really disappointing, because she could have told us right away. We also had to wait quite a long time for the check, during which I got even more bites. By the end, we were both frustrated and upset. I cannot recommend this restaurant. The food and the service are definitely not worth the hassle of walking to an ATM to withdraw cash. If you do decide to come, make sure to bring your own repellent — even during the day, there are swarms of mosquitoes that will bite nonstop.

Nice restaurant right by the water. We got both Fillets. Recommend the Breaded Fillet! We also got the pescadillas--sauce was good and spicy. The fried dessert was also really good!

This might well be the only truly authentic restaurant in or around Cancun. It's NOT built of concrete; it's basically a shack right on the waterside on the other side of the lagoon from downtown Cancun. The kitchen is mega-basic, but the output is good. Only disappointment is that they insist on deep frying fresh fish. "A la plancha" would be so much better.

Wonderful hidden gem. Wait staff was extremely friendly and efficient. Food was delicious and fresh. We ordered the fried whole fish and they even let us picked which fish we wanted to eat. The fried fish tacos were good too. Their hot sauce was definitely spicy! Warning: Cash Only!

In a world of chain restaurants and overpriced tourist traps, this is a gem. Hidden down a little stairway, tucked away along the water, you will not have a better, more relaxing meal in Cancun. If you, like me, consider Cancun the Vegas of Mexico (in a bad way) and find it to be a stressful place full of difficult tourists and weird vibes, go here for a break from the craziness. The food: fresh, outstanding, simple, delightful. The space is lovely and has had some great updates over the years so it's really quite a comfortable venue now. Note, it is cash only.

Beautiful sunset view, food was pretty good. Guacamole and Basa was good. Unfortunately Grouper was sold out. Nothing fancy, paper napkin dispenser on the tables, plastic chairs and very basic drink choices. We were seated right away but had to finally flag down a server to take our order. Hopefully it was just a bad night for her. She was anything but pleasant.

Recommended by a local. Really nice view of the bay. Ordered shrimp cocktail, fried plantain with cream and a fresca. Food was delicious and prices were cheap. Paid $5 for lunch. Hotels will not share that with you. Beware of the fresh salsa, it definitely has a kick but soooooo gooood.

Great views, chill spot, fresh shrimp, the guacamole was fresh and delightful and the octopus was not rubbery at all. This spot is hidden right off the side of the road. We started our trip to cancun here and it was a pleasant experience.
