"Start us off with an overview.Located deep in the semi-rural Constantia valley, the hotel is on big grounds and has sprawling private residences as neighbors. It is extremely private and secluded. The original owner of the Relais & Chateaux-affiliated hotel, the late Liz McGrath, established the impressive nine acres of gardens that surround the hotel. From the tree-lined driveway, which curves past a tennis court and terraced rose garden, several white-washed Cape Dutch-era hotel buildings come into view, including the original manor house, stables and wine cellar. The gardens are a profusion of fragrance and color throughout the year. What’s the crowd like?British, American and European families, honeymoon couples and baby boomers on tour, often repeat guests who’ve been coming here for years and know the staff by name. Onto the good stuff: Tell us about your room. The impeccable taste and razor-sharp eye of the late Liz McGrath, the original owner, is still in evidence (the property, part of the McGrath Collection, is still owned by her family). More old-school than modern, the country house style of decoration is constantly being refreshed and updated, but remains true to the heritage and patina of the historic property. Expect floral and striped wallpaper, comforters, plump cushions and plush carpets, and swathes of heavy curtaining that allow you to sleep in. My favorite room is 41 in the Hohenort hotel wing, housed in the original manor house. It’s one of three luxury, high-ceilinged, spacious rooms upstairs, all opening up onto a shared balcony with garden and mountain views. In total there are 27 rooms, 18 suites, and the Madiba Villa (named after Nelson Mandela, with a mini-library of titles about the legend) with three bedrooms and a private pool. Not all rooms have a veranda or balcony, so enquire when booking. Were there any details that made you go, "Wow?"Molten Brown in the suites; locally produced Charlotte Rys in the rooms. Fresh roses and other seasonal blooms are a charming touch. Free wifi, while not fast, is adequate and available everywhere. How about the food? There are two excellent, well-respected restaurants, one being the Greenhouse in the Hohenort manor house (one of the country’s top restaurants for special-occasion dining), Executive chef Farrel Hirsch and his team wow with tasting menus featuring local and heritage ingredients that tell stories about the Cape, paired to lesser-known wines of the region. In summer, it’s open for lunch as well as dinner (dinner only in winter). Breakfast (included in the room rate) is served in the light, bright The Conservatory, located in the Cellars building, which is also a fabulous choice for lunch or afternoon tea followed by a stroll through the gardens. Fresh produce and herbs for both restaurants are grown in the hotel’s extensive kitchen garden. Sunday lunch (a proper English roast) is an institution and prices here offer excellent value for money. Don’t miss the homemade scones at breakfast, or the Cape Malay speciality, bobotie, made with spiced lamb, for lunch. Anything else you think we should know about?Don’t miss the great little spa for a hydrating facial, summer-ready pedicure, and a tension-dissolving massage. There are two heated swimming pools, a tennis court and, most surprisingly, a Gary Player-designed putting and chipping green. Children are welcome. Bottom line: worth it, and why?The hotel is minutes from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens and close to Constantia’s boutique wineries and top restaurants, including La Colombe. Access to the southern reaches of the Cape Peninsula, including Cape Point, is easy from here, while the city centre (Waterfront, Robben Island, and Table Mountain aerial cableway) is about 20 minutes by car. There’s a great little spa for a hydrating, hardworking QMS facial, pedicures, manicures and massages. There are two heated swimming pools, a hair salon, gym, and a tennis court. The bar serves local wines by the glass on the terrace, and wedding ceremonies are often held in the gardens. Children are welcome, as are well-behaved dogs on leads. This is a sophisticated country house hotel set in nine acres of gardens with two excellent restaurants on site, and several more in close proximity. You could call it the best of both worlds—halfway between the city’s main tourist attractions and the natural splendor of the southern reaches of the Cape Peninsula." - Jane Broughton

"Like many of the properties in the residential greenbelt in Constantia, the Cellars-Hohenort is set back from the road—with 10 acres of gardens—the pride and joy of the late Liz McGrath, hotelier and formidable businesswoman. On arrival, the overwhelming impression is of masses of space, immaculate lawns, and mature trees that have been growing for decades, if not centuries. The whitewashed buildings are immaculate, and the staff are waiting in the driveway to welcome you. This is a sophisticated country house hotel set in 10 acres of gardens. You could call it the best of both worlds—halfway between the city and Waterfront, and the beaches and natural beauty of the southern Peninsula." - Jane Broughton

"Tucked away in an exclusive residential part of rural Constantia, the Greenhouse is the show pony of the venerable Cellars-Hohenort Hotel, set in acres of English country-style gardens. Here, chef Farrel Hirsch aces exquisite combinations like  steamed corn bread with smoked snoek emulsion and apricot glaze—apricot jam being a typical Cape Malay accompaniment to smoked snoek (a bony game fish). It’s a beautiful setting in which to enjoy inspired food, while learning a bit about South Africa’s star ingredients—the chefs describe their food as an experience that’s as complex and joyful as South Africa itself." - Jane Broughton

we Had a very comfortable stay. Gardens are spectacular and so lovey to take a walk. the room was very comfy with good quality linens and pillows. We stayed in the Manor House on the top floor. beautiful views and a quiet floor as it is 3 flights of stairs. maybe mention this ion check in. the shower was not great, water trickled out and temperature fluctuated with little to no water pressure. I wish hotels would steer away from big shower roses in a small shower cubicle. no amenities to have a soak in the bath. The staff were friendly and helpful , in between we did experience a few inconsistencies which is disappointing. Housekeeping also inconsistent. The conservatory Restuatant is an exquisite space with beutiful decor. the food was fantastic, huge compliments to the chef and the team. |overall a lovely stay but not worth the price, maybe offer SA rates to us locals. the cape has become very very expensive. sadly geared for the foreign tourists.

The Cellars-Hohenort is an absolute gem. The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the breathtaking gardens—immaculately maintained and a true oasis of tranquility. The staff was exceptional, going above and beyond to ensure a seamless experience. Dining at the restaurant was a delight. Our room was spacious, elegantly decorated, and incredibly comfortable. A perfect blend of luxury and charm—highly recommended!||

Our best meal yet here in Capetown for a 70th birthday celebration. |The cool Greenhouse seating area is furnished luxuriously amongst calming tropical plants. |Polite, friendly & attentive service from Nellie. The incredible food was exquisite, with so many different flavours. It was the best calamari I have ever eaten, so tender & delicious. We were unable to manage dessert sadly. Another time hopefully. |This was a memorable experience & I cannot wait to return.

It is one of the most beautiful restaurants I've visited in the area. Great vibe and good food. Was quite busy, and waiters took a while to make their rounds but a good experience nonetheless.

We stayed in the Hotel in November and we must say that we had an amazing stay! It’s totally worth every dollar. The hotel is located in a very beautiful spot right under the table mountain in an elite neighbourhood of Constantia known for its wine making traditions and bohemian lifestyle. The premises are immersed in a beautiful fynbos garden ❤️ The rooms are spacious and tidy. The service is impeccable. The resort has several facilities: a restaurant, a gym, spa, and a pool. As for the restaurant: we visited many restaurants in our life, but this one was probably the best experience we ever had. The food was delicious. The wine choice was top notch. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive - a special thanks for accommodating a gluten-free menu. Special thanks goes to Daniel and Marshall for their passion for the craft and their stellar work ❤️

It was the first time I've ever been to a High Tea and what a wonderful experience. Items on the menu were delicious, something different being your own tea with a timer. Service top notch, waiter/waitress very attentive and friendly. We were a group of ladies who belong to a villain and one of our members is relocating to Europe. We all thoroughly enjoyed our time at The Alphen.

All hotel staff are smiling and friendly and ask how your day is. And this is where they obviously believe their mission of providing the service ends. We checked-in and were led to our “Premier Suite” by a receptionist. As always, I inspected the room and asked to bring some simple things: extra water and towels, 2nd luggage rack, shower gel, couple of memory pillows, this kind of stuff. Of course, - she said and left us alone to unpack. We unpacked, went for lunch, came back – absolutely nothing materialized. I called reception again and couple more times till the end of a day before getting at least majority of things I was asking for. With exception for a couple of things that is possible to live without, like 2nd rack (we already found where to put one of our bags on) and shower gel. These ones I managed to achieve only after speaking with hotel’s GM couple of days later. In the afternoon I finally located the gym (no single sign for it) and found it without a single clean towel that I could use. On the contrary, the floor of the showers near it was covered by piles of used ones. Maybe the gym isn’t popular here after all. Next day we had some winery visits arranged, before leaving I personally put “make-up my room” sign on the door outside, gave some instructions of what must be done to reception (bring that shower gel!). Coming back in late afternoon we are seeing the same sign on the outside door, just turned “don’t disturb” side on. Strange – I have never seen house-keeping doing that after making-up the room, normally they remove the sign and put it inside. Opening the door we find that absolutely nothing was done in terms of making up the room (forget shower gel), but both TV in bedroom and living room are switched-on loud on football channel (!!!). Huh? I spoke with 2 managers about this: just “manager” and GM and they promised me “to come down to the bottom of this”. Maybe they did, just forgot to share. All in all, when staying in this place I had a feeling of being an unwilling participant of some TV prank show. When people around you are doing and saying some stupid things and watchers choking with laughter seeing your reaction on your face close-up on their TV-sets. They couldn’t even collect payment from my credit card properly when we were checking-out. I got a message from my bank saying the payment has been processed, while their machine said “declined”. We agreed with their GM that they would contact me if they didn’t get the money after all after I showed her a message from my bank. Indeed, the amount was credited back to my account after some time. When I asked my bank what it was, their answer was: the hotel cancelled their request immediately after payment was authorized. Of course, I paid them what was due using a link they sent me by mail – after they managed to send a correct one. Their first link was asking me to pay ZAR 0,00. :) All in all, if you are afraid, you might get bored on your holidays, this is the place for you to stay.|On a positive side, their restaurant is quite good, very convenient to have one just several steps from your room and not have to go out every night, especially, if you had a busy day before. |Finally, facilities. The gardens are nice and the buildings and rooms look maintained, except everything is very old. Like the bathroom door that was never closing properly, because of a groove made by hundreds (or thousands) of hands trying to smash it shut throughout hotels’ history. Was fixed after I spoke with her and intervention of their GM! Air-conditioners in the rooms most likely was up to date in the beginning of the century somewhere but now is capable either of producing equal cold air always at the same speed, no matter what settings you put them on or producing some lucid warm air don’t helping you much. One in the bedroom is installed right above the bed and works with a noise comparable with one of a plane. I could sleep with noise blocking headphones only. And, yes, both my wife and I ended our adventure at Cellars with a cold inflicted by their A/C. Needless to say we were very grateful.

Beautiful hotel with very friendly staff. The gardens are breathtaking and very well maintained. Breakfast was very good in a pleasant atmosphere. I would only wish the bathroom of our suite would be up to the room standard and more spacious.
